I managed a theater in 1999. Our screens had masking on the sides to cover the screen with 1.85:1 features. Our projectionist put a que on the film that opened the masking to match the image on the screen. It was glorious to watch. Great review of one of my favorite films.

The aspect ratio shift to the regular ratio at the 19:20 mark of the movie is actually done beautifully, I didnt remember that. Notice how it shifts slowly as the window opens to show the outer space, its subtle because the background is black on the sides so it shifts without calling for attention. very nice!

One of my all time favorite comedies! The cast is pitch perfect, the comedy is wonderfully satirical and the direction spot on. Sigourney Weaver also looks oh so fine too!

FYI: The European 4K-Steel Book does not have the extra cover (only a paper slip) but in exchange it does have the FullHD Blu-ray included. Oh, and it doesn't come with a streaming code, either.

Actually, Sigourney Weaver was still in the 10th and final year of her 40's [Age 49]. Filming began in the early part of 1999. She didn't enter the first year of her 50's until October. But yeah, this is the definitive version to get. I like the cover of the standard 4-K release.

Decided to grab this. Didn't show the Steelbook on Amazon in Canada, but the regular edition was just $20 CDN so it's quite a bit cheaper than the list price, considering it only just came out. Picked up a couple other 4Ks whilst I was at it (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice & Blazing Saddles, both in 4K naturally).

I remember watching this in the theater and the curtains were 1.35:1, then they opened them to 1.85:1, and finally 2.35:1 🎉. Freaking amazing. Glad they did that for this… I just ordered it from Amazon, but it says 1-2 months wait time 😂. It’ll be here in a week or two, Amazon does this 1-2 months stuff once in a while… can’t wait

Paramount's Steelbook for Dragonslayer also had a cardboard slipcover. That is the only other time I can think of them doing that... Waiting for my Steelbook to arrive from Zavvi. The UK release includes the Blu-ray disc, but it doesn't appear to have a slip.

I disagree with the picture. I felt it was a weak outing for Paramount. It is decent but expected more. It felt soft throughout most of movie. But still miles ahead of the DVD I have been watching for years. I did love the audio. It made up for the shortcomings of the video. I got the steelbook from Walmart with the magnets.

It's a shame this seems to be UHD only without a companion Blu-ray. I never saw this in the theater, it might have done this on the VHS and I forgot. I did get both the DVD and blue ray and I don't think it did the screen ratio changes there. I forwarded the scenes to check it, cause I was almost sure the disk was bad and saw the change to the full letterbox and it clicked that it must have been original to the movie.

Uk version only comes with steelbook or boxset and uk steelbook doesnt come with slip cover. Thought the tranfer didnt look that much of an upgrade in quality . Harold Ramis was the original director but left just before filming as he wasnt happy with tim alan casting . Alec baldwin and steve martin turned it down. On my tv i got black bars on sides not just top bottom for first 20 min . Like a window box

I bought the bluray 2 yrs ago and redeemed the digital code on my appletv and usually when the studio releases a movie on 4k my digital copy gets updated to 4k so I won't this up so can't wait to see what the 4k looks like.

Paramount 4K discs are the worst IMO. The language select straight off the bat (which should be set in your player already making the forced language select pointless) is obnoxious enough. But the Last Memory function on players doesn't work on the Paramount discs, which I'd guess gets broken by the language select menu on boot up. I use the Last Memory function A LOT on my players and hate that it won't work on Paramount discs. Never had the issue with any other 4K discs and I've got a lot of 4K discs...

I am definitely not a fan of the aspect ratio. It seriously just looks broken. I don't mind the first minutes at all given its a tv show but that 20 minutes was literally playing like a small box in the middle of the screen. Huge disappointment in that 20 minutes
