Great tutorial Just love the weathering on your wagons you make it look so simple and just shows what can be achieved without a airbrush thanks for sharing ... Pete

I love your very practical how to guide with simplistic comentary. i have 12 O gauge ones to weather. What I do for solebars and underframeon general is to mux rust with matt black to tone it down then mist it on witg an airbrush. I can then use a bit of gloss black on the axle boxes that look like grease. I realise how complex a mineral wagon is locos are easy compared to these.

Hi Steven, thanks for those comments. The tutorial was as much for me to reference as anyone else who could make use of it. I've just subscribed to my first garden railway channel (yours!) so I'll look forward to seeing that rake of wagons weathered. As for airbrushes, I don't own one and am not entirely sure it's a beneficial investment for me. Still undecided though. 🙃 Paul

Galgorm Hall OO Gauge Railway Layout Paul Firstly I sawa a lot of vids on weathering mineral wagons and your technique I like. Ihave never really dry brushed before. i suggest you buy an airbrush, you will wonder why you never used one before. they dont replace brushes but they are the gest tools for the RIGHT job. I would always paint a wagon with one and the underframe is a breeze. My approach to weathering mine will be to use you method after I have made them as in service condition. So firstly I would airbrush the chassis using rust dulled down with matt black and just waft it on it gives this lovely track crime look over it.I then would use gloss black on axle boxes with a brush to show a bit of grease. Using a dark grey with matt black I would dust the wagons with the airbrush and then the whole wagon will look likes its veen in service. Now this is where I will use you method. Your method is really not so mucus weathering as used abused and unloved which is what they really looked like. I havent tried it yet but will do I recently built two slaters gaurds vans in O gauge i simply used my method so simply weather down. note I havent done the axle boxes yet as I need some gloss black or even some gloss brown. s1058.photobucket.com/user/topshed34a/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170324_163608_zpsijom3d1x.jpg.html

Steven, that's when I see the benefits of an airbrush. Your brake van has that dusty look that all vehicles get with running and can really only be achieved with an airbrush - dry brushing is a little clumsy to create that effect. There are so many choices on the market for an airbrush though and I'm befuddled as to what is the right one to purchase. Any advice will be gratefully received. Since you brought up the subject of Brake vans, the link below shows my efforts using the dry brush method. The kit was an old Airfix one with florist wire added for the handrails. s1380.photobucket.com/user/carnehan1975/media/Rolling%20stock/IMG_0337_zpsy0occjhx.jpg.html Paul

Just bought ten of these Dapol kits so will be referring back to this video for the weathering process, because I never did see a clean one going from Bold Colliery to Bold Power station back in the 70s!!!

Wow! Not only have you dredged up that old video but you’ve bought ten of the wagons! They are a nice straight forward kit, you’ll be fed up looking at them by the end of it. If you are on Facebook, look me up, I’d be interested in seeing your progress with them. Paul

Galgorm Hall - Will do, when I eventually escape from Gatwick and get home I shall have a go at making them. As you quite rightly say though, it might feel a bit repetitive!

Great video Paul. I'm not a big lover of weathering my stock, but i have too say excellant job. Though to be honest at the start of the video i thought you where a bit of a nutter ruining a good wagon, boy was i wrong. That looks really good ;).
