Galina Vishnevskaya (nee Ivanova, born 25 October 1926 in Leningrad, USSR) was a Soviet and Russian soprano opera singer, also known as the wife of distinguished cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. In 1944 she made her professional debut at the Leningrad Operetta Theater and from 1947 worked for the Leningrad Philarmonics. In 1951, Vishnevskaya won a competition held by the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and was invited to join its troupe. During her time at the Bolshoi, Vishnevskaya performed more than 30 roles, including Tatyana in P. Tchaikovsky's "Evgeny Onegin", Leonora in L. van Beethoven's "Fidelio", Cherubino in W.A. Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", Natasha Rostova in S. Rakhmaninov's "War and Peace", Aida in G. Verdi's "Aida", Tosca in G. Pucinni's "Tosca" and many more. Vishnevskaya was one of the first opera singers from the USSR to achieve international recognition. From 1955, Vishnevskaya actively recorded and toured abroad, appearing at Finnish National Opera, Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Opera de Paris, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Covent Garden Royal Opera and other leading stages all other the world. At her solo concerts she performed a large variety of classical works by P.Tchaikovsky, L. van Beethoven, E. Britten, D. Shostakovich and others, frequently accompanied by her husband M. Rostropovich on the piano. In 1974, the couple left the Soviet Union and settled in the USA and then Paris. In 1990, Vishnevskaya and Rostropovish returned to Russia. In 2002, she opened her own opera theatre in Moscow, the "Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre". The video made in 1964 features Vishnevskaya and Rostropovich performing a piece "Отчего" ("Why") composed by P. Tchaikovsky to the Russian translation of a poem by J. Goete.
