I am a big fan of Thomas and of Nelson Pass. I enjoy Thomas & Stereo reviews and the community he hangs with in Montreal. I am happy that his Gallion business is being well received. Great review here. I think it is high praise for Thomas that his amp can be compared to a Pass standard product. I also think it is fine for Steve to acknowledge that while the A20 has the resolution chops, he and others may prefer the Pass sound. I'd be thrilled to have my stuff compared to Nelson's stuff.

I met Thomas at AXPONA ‘23. He was showing his tube amp (TS 120?) and sharing the room with another KZbinr. He struck me as a genuinely nice guy who is very transparent about his role/agenda. Copper foil caps are incredibly pricey, as are aluminum caps, so the price doesn’t seem out of line with similar commercial offerings. The fact it can compete with the xa25 is high praise indeed.

Hi Steve. I am a long time subscriber from Canada 🇨🇦. I have always enjoyed your insightful, honest, eloquent and entertaining reviews. Your description of the sound of the Galion TS A20 made me want to run not walk out to buy one! I am rightfully proud of our Canadian artists and audio designers. I have been a fan of the Moody Blues since purchasing "In Search of the Lost Chord" in 1968. It was indeed a different time back then. Young people were taking a different path back then. Whenever I listen to "In Search of the Lost Chord" I'm taken back to a wonderful time in my life, when the world was opening up to me. I recently saw Justin Hayward and his band play at Fallsview Casino in my hometown of Niagara Falls Ontario. It was a fantastic show! I met the band after the show and they all signed my concert poster. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life! Best wishes Steve.

I replaced an Audio Research VT-100 Mk III amplifier which gave up the ghost and I will be repairing with the Galion A 75 Solid State amp and I am staggered by the way it makes my entire system sound. It handles Maggie 3.6R’s like “That’s all you got!”. Any term in the audiophile lexicon receives 4 to 5 star ratings by me. This amplifier is truly amazing. Not as soft as my Audio Research but somewhat close being fed by a Pass XP-22. Anyone who wants to spend just under $1500 delivered for a great great amp I believe should watch and read all the reviews about anything made by Thomas. No one can believe that amplifiers in this price range can perform like amplifiers that sell for at least five times their price.

I don’t agree with the notion that the Galion TS A20 is over priced unless we conclude that the Pass Labs 25 is overpriced The are priced as the sellers desire For me, the Michael Yee Audio PA3 class A power amplifier is the one to pick in this category at $1,750 Thankfully we can all get what we want

Thanks, the cost to build the TS A20 is very very high because it is made in Canada. Also, just the jupiter capacitors alone retail for $500 USD.
@DSor12 ай бұрын
I am not sure Thomas is pricing the amp as he desires. I think he keeps dev and operational costs as low as possible, so that he can offer the best possible product at the lowest possible price, and I think he is doing a great job at that. I sincerely doubt that the amp you suggest will be able to keep pace with the A20 if imaging, soundstage and clarity are your thing. But you need to have equipment that can keep up with the pace. With the A20 you can forget about the amp being a bottle neck, and you can continue optimizating your system by looking elsewhere, as the amp's ceiling for scalability is really high due to the components it was made with. I have the A20 by the way, thanks Thomas for the good work!

Followed Thomas for years. A very humble fellow. Not sure his sound is my sound though. I find Thomas overly concerned with "resolution". And IMHO, in the real world there is rarely superclean hi res sound. Anyone who has been in a concert hall knows this. So WHAT are you hearing when you hear more than what the audience hears and even more than the performer heard. However, I realize there are a LOT of Thomases out there so yeah, it's subjective and particular to the beholder. There is NO perfect sound, or even one sound for everyone. Heck I probably listen to stuff that those guys would think was muffled, not clean enough, way too warm, etc. Yet, when your primary medium is the CD-that's NOT a bad thing, lol!

Nice review, Cheers to you and Thomas! Maybe Thomas could as a side thing try to take down The Momentum / Gryphons of this world next! I connected it to my Kudos Titan 808 loudspeakers, and used my Auralic Vega S1 as a preamp, it works flawlessly, got no problem driving my speakers, and they are 91dB in 8 ohms. We have timbre, 3-D sound, details, punch and deep bass, didn’t miss anything, and this is coming from a guy, that have had a lot of different hi-end setups over 35 years. MBL 101e MK II, Avantgarde Duo Omega, Estelon, JBL, Klipsch, Kudos, Bastanis OB etc with amps like MBL, Aavik, McIntosh, Mark Levinson, Krell, Accuphase, Wavac, Kondo, AN, Pass Labs and so on. I too, a big Moody Blues fan (and of your's and Thomas'). Early 80s I was in England and decided to visit Cobham, a small town/village 40 miles south of London where the MBs had their head office on High Street. I got to meet Justin Hayward's personal manager (not Justin). While in England I purchased all of the Moodies earlier Albums except the one you mentioned here. I also obtained the Blue Jays album and one of Ray Thomas' solo albums. These albums have never been played and are in pristine condition. I am seriously considering a Fluance turntable just to play these albums. I just bought a Schiit Ragnarok (I love it). It has a lovely preamp that would team up nicely with the A20. My current speakers are the Elac DBR62 and they pair nicely with the Rag but I wonder how they'd fair with the A20? Over the years I have always enjoyed Thomas' reviews I do wish him all the luck with his new dream. 🇨🇦

I respect Thomas and value his reviews. But to offer constructive feedback, I have been running Class A amplifiers for several decades, an electrical engineer, and I personally don’t feel this represents a competitive value proposition from a price perspective. I mean no disrespect whatsoever; only stating an opinion that a lower price would make this product more palatable and open doors to additional customers. The market for Class A amplification is a tiny enough niche. Yes, I understand these aren’t mass produced and development time was a labor of love.

It could be done DIY for a lot less. I'd say it competes with First Watt offerings which are more in the $5k range. Thomas uses boutique parts that I don't think you see in Nelson's offering. In that light, it is a pretty good deal. Again, if so inclined, a First Watt offering from a few years ago such as the F5 can be built for a few hundred dollars and will sound very good.

Loving what Thomas is doing with the Galion project. I agree the logo is definitely way too big for my taste as well, not much of a fan of it anyway but other than that it looks like a fantastic amp. I'd like to see you review the JBL 4367s, Steve. They go for La Scala/Klipschorn money but are JBLs "version" of a Cornwall type speaker. The predecessor model was a 3-way design like the Cornwall but they went for a 2-way design with the 67. Darko did a nice review of the 4349s. I may be in the minority but other than the Forte IV, aesthetic improvements (late 2010s) and the internal wiring/binding posts upgrades, I'm not liking what Roy Delgado is doing with the Heritage range voicing and driver changes wise. Rear porting the Heresy for example (is literally heresy) and putting a phase plug on the midrange driver different than all else in the lineup must have Paul Klipsch rolling in his grave. The changes to the Heresy no longer allow it to function as a center channel speaker in the lineup either due to the tone changes and rear porting. JBL's new Stage 2 and 600 series also wipes the floor with Klipsch's equivalent reference and reference premiere lineup as well, both in build quality, sound, value for money and appearance. For example the 600 series has real compression drivers, something Klipsch only starts offering on the RF-7 and RC-64. I'm a huge Klipsch fan but if I was buying my Heritage speakers today and not 5-6, 7 years ago when I did, I'd have gone with JBL. They are trending upwards and Klipsch is trending down. The one ace in their sleeve is still making heritage and commercial theater in the US and the gorgeous aesthetics of the heritage lineup. Klipsch knows it too, hence the big sale on the RP600s because of the Studio 630s.

The rest of the bands songs I can’t listen to since I was a teenager. I have a homemade cd with just his songs my brother made me. The song “The Actor” is classic from the album you mention. I’ve seen him many times live. The Moodies once. Western Sky is his newest and it’s really good. which I can’t say for his peers newer music. You should watch the KZbin video of him at the r&r hall of fame. It’s an overview of his music over his career played live solo to an adoring audience with stories. Yes. Only caveat would be that it won't be as warm as your luxman, but it will be more dynamic and detailed. Sound will obviously heavily be influenced by preamp of choice. Not a fair comparison. The A1 is a $1,800 integrated amp, the TS A20 is a $3,750 power amp, so it needs to be partnered with a high-end preamp. Is there anyway people can get people to stop making records were it's mixed for cellphones and people who listen to music as a background noise. Also there are albums that when released they are better sounding. Then they re-release them after giving it the cellphone treatment. If it doesn't say on the front that it's a re-release how can you make sure it's what you're looking for. There are no physical record stores near me so I can't go in and hold up two different recordings to choose from.

@@Tuhar there are some Fosi audio class D amps, i got one, but they are heating at 24 volts at 2 ohms like crazy. so, i use power supply with 15 volt, and its good. more volts , more heating, automatically more distorsion, which i donm,t like. Also there are NAD,s that are good also, at AB class.

For comparison, First Watt F7, which you also have, would have been better choice than Pass XA25.
@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliacАй бұрын
Not really, most first watt amplifiers are fussy about speaker matching, they are not "Universal" amplifiers the way the xa25, within its power rating, is.
@samuilc8000Ай бұрын
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Steve, it seems you've lost contact with the real world. F7 is closer to TS A20 in price and power rating, two most important factors to the potential buyers. Well, it is not the first time you ignore the difference in price in comparing products. Average people do not have free access to equipment like you. Many times a few hundred dollars make big difference in decision-making as to what to buy.

The assumption that it is surprising that a great stereo live record was made in 1959 shows bias against the past. Why because people weren't as intelligent or resourceful back then? On the contrary, the culture has declined since then. You can collect hifi components made in 1959 and still have a system that is as good or better made today as anything made today. A lot of designs of today are just borrowed from the past. They were the smart ones not us because little to no advance has been made in sound equipment since then. The microphones produced in that era are still the best and still used today. New reissues dont compare well. I could make a long list of incredible records from 1959, Kind Of Blue of course is the obvious one.

Besides your point you’re making you have to understand today’s manufacturing technique and technology. Everything is really good today even for the cheap. You really don’t have to spend a lot of money to get really good sounding gear nowadays I’ve always been into photography. You had to spend big bucks to get good photo quality back in the day, you don’t have to do that anymore. The cell phones today are amazing but they take photos.

@stevesmith30332 ай бұрын
Yes it's impressive that he uses expensive caps and they do make a difference BUT using all those cheap crimped tin plated brass push-on connectors is really self defeating and makes the use of the expensive caps somewhat redundant. If it's just for marketing then I get it but not if you're looking to make a killer amp for the money. In a true hi-end amplifier we should be seeing solid connections everywhere. Push on connectors should only be used in cheaply made, high volume electronic products. On a side note, Steve? I was wondering if you use power cords to optimize the sound of the amps you evaluate? I'm sure the manufacturers include a throw away power cord knowing that audiophiles will be tweaking their sound with better power cords...

Asking here because I'm interested. Are you making these statements based on equipment you have built and or designed, or, are you repeating what others have said without being able to compare one vs another?
@stevesmith30332 ай бұрын
@@RumblestripDotNet This statement is made from my manufacturing knowledge, repair experiences and sonic experiments I have conducted. The sole reason to cut corners is to cut manufacturing costs. It's a compromise that's detrimental to sonic purity and longevity. Mechanical connections deteriorate over time due to vibrations, heat expansion and oxidation. I wouldn't call this a cheap enough amp to justify the use of this compromise and it doesn't extract the full potential of these expensive Jupiter caps.
