Hello all! To old and new fans of the channel, we welcome you! I understand the audio is a little high on our end, and I will definitely be sure to work on lowering it. When it comes to the actual episode, though, unfortunately, audio is a big issue when it comes to KZbin bots coming in to try and block the video. This happens, especially often with BBC content. To be quite frank, KZbin flagged this one after it was uploaded. This go around they took away access to monetize on it (which happens a lot), but they still allow the video to be watched. Episode 1 had to be re-edited several times due to KZbin just fully blocking it. It's a whole messy process, and I wish we were able to get that episode audio higher for y'all. I will definitely be working to see what I can do to make it a little better!

As a tip I suggest downloading the video from youtube and playing the file in VLC with the compressor activated (under "effects and filters") to help normalize the volume. Having said that.. most of us have seen these episodes a million times already - so the volume on youtube is fine If you're planning to do all of Red Dwarf I'm interested in signing up to your patreon to get the full unedited things, though!

I met Danny who plays The Cat for the 3rd time and Chris Barrie who plays Rimmer for the 2nd time in June at a convention. Chris is lovely but Danny remembered me and my son everytime down to describing the costumes my son has worn. This year as we got to the front of the queue Danny came out from behind the desk got down on my son's level and in his best cat voice said it's you again and gave him a free autographed trading card. Also met Norman Lovett(Holly) and Doug Naylor one of the creators last year.

I think the gag with the deodorant vs shaving cream was also meant to reinforce just how much of a slob Lister is. He's the polar opposite of Rimmer who is extremely nitpicky, organized, yet absolutely useless in situations that challenge him. Lister is lazy, messy, but always comes through in a pinch. Holly's deadpan delivery is brilliant throughout the entire series.. and, well.. Cat.. is a cat. There's one more crew member that's still missing in the early episodes - but if you stick with it, you'll also get to ponder the Great Question About Calculators.

The opening theme is actually a very somber version of “It’s Cold Outside” but without the lyrics. Speaking of which, the lyrics describe Lister’s current situation (it’s cold outside, there’s no kind of atmosphere, I’m all alone… more or less) and what he wants when he gets to Fiji (let me fly far away from here, fun in the sun, I want to lie shipwrecked and comatose drinking fresh mango juice, goldfish shoals nibbling at my toes).

If you're still looking for a tagline for these reactions, then I suggest either "Get Smegged" or "Have fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun"😂 . The one drawback to the first season is that there's a lot of Rimmer and Lister talking out the plot. This episode and the penultimate story of the season are the ones that go a little bigger. In subsequent seasons, we'll visit some planets meet some alien races and explore other sci-fi tropes and the episodes will have a lot more incidents in addition to just dialogue.

If you watch the KZbin documentary “launching Red Dwarf”, this was the episode that got Red Dwarf recommissioned for a second series because the ratings were still very healthy and there wasn’t much of a drop-off in ratings from episode one. (First episode of a new show usually gets higher viewing figures owing to curious viewers deciding if they want to watch the rest, then the ratings drop then they either keep dropping or slowly build up as word-of-mouth has its effect and people start watching the show who hadn’t seen the first few episodes).

It’s very clear that some of the writers in Star Trek TNG (not to mention Moffat on Doctor Who) were fans of Red Dwarf. In particular there is one episode of Red Dwarf season 2 that has clearly influenced a storyline in TNG season 4.

Also, in DS9, the Promenade has a sign post that had, amongst other things, directions to get to the offices of a company called "The Jupiter Mining Corporation"....the owners of Red Dwarf xD

These reactions are now my favourite thing on KZbin! I saw this episode as a kid in the 80s after our Australian lodger asked me to video it while she went to the pub. (She'd correctly concluded that I knew how to work the video better than my parents.) So this was my first episode and I loved it. I had to get a recap of the first episode from my best friend and his little brother who'd seen it. In later years after the show had become popular friends would come round and watch my recordings of the early episodes they'd missed. So thanks Aussie girl, and thanks to you two too!

Glad you've dipped your toes into the turbid waters of Red Dwarf. The only thing you need to have in mind is that there is no plot arc for a series, but they do occasionally refer back to events of previous episodes. For example, you do get to find out how they managed to get babies on board, but not until the final episode of season 2.

I'm a massive Red Dwarf fan, but I'll be honest - If I'd started with series 1, I doubt I would have stuck with it. I was lucky enough to find the show in 1992, with Red Dwarf V, immediately followed by a repeat of Red Dwarf IV, and then just over a year later the BBC repeated it from the beginning.

My father and I discovered this show when I was still in Highschool. I have seen Every episode more than once, I have memorabillia all over my house, I have clothes including 2 hoodies that were gifts from my father as recently as 2 years ago. I have and have read the books multiple times. I have Craig Charles' The Log Audio book as well. I am planning on getting either Starbug or Blue Midget Tattooed on my Sci-fi arm. And after all this, I would still only consider myself a moderate fan. This is one of those shows that once you are bitten by the bug, it sticks with you for life. You may not even realize it, but it ill happen.

Cats evolved very different priorities to their human counterparts. Their most important invention, for example, is the portable steam iron, so they can get rid of creases instantly. And being evolved from cats, vanity is the dominant personality trait for the species, hence the need to have a vast wardrobe so they can get changed every 15-20 minutes. :D

This is one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever made! It can get really absurd at times to first time viewers but that's just part of its charm. I'm sure if you stick with it you'll love these guys and start quoting it often 😂

If you want some quotes from it one of the classic all time quotes from the show is "Smoke me a Kipper, i'll be back for breakfast!". You have to continue past series 1, as events of series 1 do play a part in series 2 and beyond. You have to check it out till series 6, as series 4,5,6 are the peak of red dwarf and british comedy!

Hi! :) Just came across you two last night when your first Red Dwarf video got recommended to me. Being binge watching your TNG reactions since! :) Fun fact, Patrick Stewart is a big fan of this show and hosted a "Red Dwarf" night on BBC2 in the UK (where Red Dwarf aired) on it's 10th anniversary. Most of the videos are on youtube, but I wouldn't recommend you watch them yet due to spoilers. He has a funny story of coming across the show though :) I love this show though. It's stupid, clever, silly, charming, dumb and deep... often in each episode :) Loving your content! Thank you!
