It just occurred to me that Rory might have a special affinity to the gangers’ situation since he did live 2000 years as a plastic Nestene duplicate. It’s never stated though.
@zemoxian4 жыл бұрын
“I’ve seen whole worlds turn inside out in an hour. A lot can go wrong in an hour.” I’ve heard this might be an inside or 4th wall joke as a typical episode is an hour. So he’s describing a typical Who episode there. Though this is a two parter so in this case it takes two hours to go wrong and put it back together, I guess. Spoiler? (Can’t remember if a similar joke occurred before or after this....) There was a similar joke about not landing on Sunday because Sundays are boring. At the time the show aired on Saturdays.
@Doctor_Who_RocksАй бұрын
But a typical episode isn't an hour! It's 45 minutes, which is ¾ hour. Or in the Chibnall and Whittaker era It's 50 minutes. Adverts might make it an hour abroad. But no adverts on the BBC, so 45 + 0 = 45 & 50 + 0 = 50. So that theory you heard doesn't make much sense.

Those episodes where it’s a small crew in a confined area is known as a “base under siege” story...they became super popular during the 2nd Doctors era, as they were a good majority of his stories...Matt Smith was a huge fan of the 2nd Doctor and thus, enjoyed these type of stories
@caitlin3294 жыл бұрын
I think "huge fan" is slightly overstating it -he didn't even remember Jamie's name once lol. He watched and enjoyed Tomb of the Cybermen when preparing for the role.

Technically they're bottle episodes.
@alextrill58294 жыл бұрын
@@DerekHartley bottle episodes are also kinda light on SFX and props usually. This one isn't.
@caitlin3294 жыл бұрын
@@DerekHartley It's less of a bottle episode because it uses different settings. Base under siege is specific for people trapped (usually on a base) and under attack from a threat. A bottle episode is an episode which is usually particularly low budget and relies on 1 or 2 sets and usually just the main cast/a limited cast.

The "small crews of people," thing is carried over from classic Who. Back in the day that kind of story was a regular occurrence because it's cheap and quick to make - not a lot of sets or locations, not a lot of actors to cast. It started out as a production convenience but it works out quite nicely to make tight focused stories.
@DaleRibbons4 жыл бұрын
I believe the trope name is 'Base Under Siege'.
@caitlin3294 жыл бұрын
It also provides a great environment for character development of the ones in the story, actually. It was always much easier in Classic Who for obvious reasons, but I feel like you get a bit of that in this 2 parter.
@DaleRibbons4 жыл бұрын
"I feel like bad things are going to happen". In a Doctor Who story? That's unheard of! :-) Sarah Smart has been in a LOT of shows. The first thing i remember her from was 'At Home With The Breathwaites', where Peter Davison (The 5th Doctor) played her father.

Raquel Cassidy who played Cleaves had previously appeared in a BBC political drama called "Party Animals"... with a guy called Matt Smith!... She went on to appear in an excellent BBC Sitcom called "Lead Balloon" with Jack Dee... and Tony Gardiner - who went on to appear in Doctor Who as well! Bizarrely, the pilot episode for that series also featured an actress called Michelle Gomez!

Your conversation reminded me of a David Brin book called "Kiln People". where people constantly use a technology very similar to the one in this episode, except the double are purposely independent, they know the are not real and they only last for 24 hours. at the end of their existence, their memories can be downloaded back to the real person. people basically use that technology to improve their work load, the real person stay at home and have fun, while the double goes to work/school.

You know, if you ever get tired of reacting to stuff, you could just film your cats instead. It'll probably be way easier, and chances are you'll end up getting even more views by doing that. As the start of a two-parter, I think this episode is rather solid. It has a pretty creepy atmosphere, and has some lovely moments of gooey squelchy body horror. There's some nice moments with the companions (I love the fact that they wind down between adventures by playing darts and listening to Muse), especially Rory who gets to show off how kind and compassionate he is in his scenes with Jennifer. It isn't the most original story - as Paula mentioned it does feel very reminiscent of the Silurian story from last series - but it is a generally decent start to this story, complete with a pretty good cliffhanger
