I didn't learn this in riding school. We learned that we have to sit down and like follow the motion of the horse. I can't tell how many times I've fallen off a horse while gallloping. I have something called the crystal disease which causes me to lose my balance every once in a while, this is why I've fallen off so many times. I stopped riding because I thought that I would never be able to truly enjoy riding a horse ever again because of this disease, but I've recently started horse riding again and I won't let this disease stop me. Thank you for great tips!

Can you please do a video on getting your horse to canter? Every time I want my horse to canter it takes a really fast trot before she does.
@sarahbarham859210 жыл бұрын
That used to happen to me too! I found that it was usually because I wasn't setting my horse up properly to canter. Now I have a list of things I do before I ask my horse to canter: first I shorten the reins up a lot, then I wake my horse up by speeding up and slowing down at the walk (or sitting trot--I never canter from a posting trot) a couple times, then I do a small half-halt and at the exact moment of the release I slide my leg back and squeeze. This always works, because it lets the horse know that I want him to canter, rather than just go at a faster trot.
@lorellejustice3848 Жыл бұрын
@@sarahbarham8592this is exactly what I was going to say, keep slowing him down but not stop moving. They only want to please. Slowing them down tells them they arnt doing what you’re asking for. So when you ask them to go again, they’ll say “okay!!”

Can everyone shut up about them not knowing the differencw between a gallop and a canter? When I lived in Holland and had lessons and my own horse, there was no canter. a canter was considered a gallop and gallop was running gallop or something. Who knows they live in a country where they don't have canter either. I'm sure they know ehat they are doing.

If you watch closely at the slow mo, you can see all 4 feet hit the ground separately, a 4 beat gait. Also there is a moment of suspension, where all four feet are off the ground. This was galloping technically. Just a very steady and controlled one. :)
@heathercountied267610 жыл бұрын
DomoEatsYoko I appreciate your correction but it is a canter haha. the canter also has a moment of suspension and while cantering a horse would not have such a good and controlled form as it is showing in this video (its head would not be as collected etc) :)

That isn't cantering. Cantering is a 3 beat gait meaning there is one foot on the ground at all times. Galloping is a 4 beat gait meaning that all feet are off the ground at one time. Dom and Jimmy aren't full out galloping like what you see say in horse racing or barrel racing and pole bending etc, this is a controlled hand gallop :)

if you ride western that is loping, or cantering as it is called in English riding, in gallop try to keep a good forward seat/two point. keep strong legs and stay off the horses back. sitting into the saddle will only make you bounce more. hope that helped

Rosie Davies galloping is so much fun, even in a western saddle! But if you are standing in the stirrups, the saddle horn will knock itself against your hips, not fun. But I really don't use a saddle, since I ride bareback most of the time

Oh right, as you can see in this video English saddles have a smooth front, making it comfortable and hard to knock against it painfully. I've never galloped bareback begore though, so I dont know what to do in that situation

@Zebra-dogs9 жыл бұрын
+Catherine Scott Personally I've found having a simple band around the neck helps for staying on. You may have your stirrups too long also, I found that whenever my stirrups were too long I'd be in an awful lot of pain
@Catxnxmouse9 жыл бұрын
+Rex888dA My mare isn't as bad as the other one is terms of roughness. The other horse throws the rider off balance and makes her so much more work to ride. I've noticed both them have a tendency to move their head from side to side, as if looking ahead with both eyes. Again, the other mare is far worse with this than my own, but my mare does so more frequently. Any idea as to why they're doing that? I've never worked with a horse who has moved their head from side to side so visibly lol
@Zebra-dogs9 жыл бұрын
***** They possibly can't see what's in front of them but it may be as serious as the other horse is hurting and the swaying motion is being used to alleviate pain, your horse may simply be copying this motion.

***** No problem, I am however by no means, an expert, so if you're too worried then please, go to a vet. I suggest it more for the other horse than your own because it does sound like your girl is copying the actions of the other one.

How do control your horse when bucking
@laug15768 жыл бұрын
Have a good seat and if he accelerates when bucking slow him down. You can calm him down by talking to him. If he bucks excessively trot and start galloping again to teach him that if he bucks he won't gallop. Maintain a seat and don't get stressed!

In English style, the correct position for the gallop is two-point. In Western style, you can sit the gallop (although you still have to lean forward), but if your horse has a bumpy gallop, it's best to get up out of the saddle so that you're not bumping up and down on the horse's back (which isn't healthy for the horse).

When I gollop I find myself falling backwards and using my hands to pull myself up and trying to balance but I end up pulling on my horses mouth to stay balanced. How can I improve? I hate galloping and then pulling my horse, Please help!
@themusemadbex10 жыл бұрын
Hi, the reason for you falling backwards is most likely because your lower leg is too far forward. Try to move your lower leg back a bit (but not too far so that you are tipping forward). It will take a while to recognise where your leg should be, (I had the same problem), so practise this. Before you gallop, it may help you to try your galloping position at a trot or canter in the school (as long as you are riding a horse you can trust not to speed up when you do so) to see if you can maintain your lower leg position, and if you are still struggling with balance, ask someone to lunge you, knot your reins (in case your horse trips) and try trot and canter without reins. This will help you to rely on your body to balance (instead of your reins). Of course always be ready when doing this, in case your horse trips, so you can grab the reins and pull his head up (don't trust the knots in the reins too much). Hope that helps. Good luck. :)
