Yes indeed. Both were great. I'd argue that Frank Welker could even do a sane Galvatron pretty well with the same voice, which in my opinion is scarier than anything else. Listen to Galvatron speak in the commercial "And it will be the last time we meet" and then in Webworld when he says "I know what I must do."

Not exactly. In the film, Galvatron proved quite cunning and competent. It was his time in Thrull's lava that really turned his insane. It was different in Japan, however.

It's because Hasbro wanted to keep the trademark (Japan has different trademark laws) and because "Megatron" just sells more toys. Aaron Archer personally wanted to call the Energon toy Galvatron Imperius. 😂

During the Beast Wars era, Meagatron (purple dinosaur who went 'Yes' all the time) served Galvatron(fought Leo Convoy). However, they were named after Galvatron and Magatron but were their own characters. Like how Optmus Primal(the gorilla) was named after Optimus Prime, but was not Optimus Prime.

You forgot the best part of the episode "The Ultimate Weapon": namely, when Swindle tried to make Galvatron PAY for Metroplex' transformation cog! To this day, I am SHOCKED that Galvy didn't do to Swindle what he did to Starscream, considering how much less patience he had than when he was Megatron! And Swindle...well, greed overrides his logic circuits on a daily basis! 😂

As a kid, after the Galvatron rebirth in the movie I remember considering Galvatron as the most grossly overpowered character. Probably had a lot to do with turning Starscream into metal shavings with 1 shot, and annihilating Ultra Magnus with ease in the same movie. Anything that got blasted by him died immediately. His insanity was menacing for an 9 year-old, too. Watching Welker’s TV clips now, it’s kind of hilarious just how maniacally insane and unpredictable Galvatron was.

As the video shows, Galvatron was listed on his Tech Specs as City Commander, because the figure was released before the movie. That's why the ads always show him as Ultra Magnus's nemesis, since that was also his title.

I think that the voicing of Galvatron is accurate because when Unicron forged Galvatron, he took on the Great Leonard Nimoy's voice, but when he was plunged into Thrull's plasma pools, his vocal circuits could have been fried, becoming the higher-pitched Raffish-Ralphesque Galvatron by the Spectacular Frank Welker. That makes sense, right?

My favourite Galvatron is the Marvel UK. There is a third Galvatron knocking about in Marvel continuity. He first appeared in Aspects of Evil: Galvatron and possibly is the same Galvatron in Perchance to Dream. The Megatron that teamed p with Galvatron in Time Wars is actually a Megatron clone created and inhabited by Lord Straxus

One thing that worked really well with Galvatron in G1 is how after the movie the change in voice actor coincided with Galvatron being affected by the plasma bath and his subsequent madness. The torment he endured under Unicron's control I can imagine could have contributed to his less than healthy mental state in season 3. It demonstrates good writing where the writers give the audience's imagination something to work with when trying to make sense of changes necessitated for production reasons such as Frank Welker taking over from Leonard Nimoy in voicing Galvatron. Nimoy, to me voiced a different version of Galvatron, one that was powerful and ruthless with only the overwhelming power of Unicron to really trouble him. After the movie Galvatron seems deranged and scarred by the humiliations experienced in the movie and the raspy voice of Welker meshes with that rather brilliantly. For all the shortcomings season 3 had (particularly with the consistency of its animation) this was one of the strong points for me. The fact that they made something of an arc with Galvatron's madness gave season 3 some semblance of serialized continuity even though the episodes were mainly episodic except for the multi part episodes. It is kinda funny to me how in the current century Hasbro is forced to keep rehashing the same characters to maintain the trademarks which is in sharp contrast to the height of G1 where they couldn't wait to discard fan favorites in the movie to push new characters onto toy store shelves. Back then their actions were certainly bold and appreciated in retrospect but at the time there was a bit of backlash at how sudden the shift was. Nowadays in newer series characters can die and self sacrifice but there's no tension like when Optimus first died because the fanbase knows the core characters will be back in a new guise in the newest reboot that Hasbro rubber stamps to sell new toys to a new generation of kids. And to be honest I don't mind the rehashing that occurs with the animated series as they're mainly for new generations of fans and they don't really besmirch the memories of G1 due to the level of separation they usually have. But I do mind the Michael bay movies as they were just dumb and tried and failed spectacularly to make live action TF appealing to the generation that grew up with the original cartoon. It saddens me greatly that age of extinction was the highest grossing movie of 2014 which was otherwise a good year for me personally and a year with two great MCU movies that were much more deserving of being highest grossing of that year.

I like watching your retrospectives whenever I get a new figure. It's like getting the cliff's notes to help jog the memories lol. Galvs, Cyclonus and Scourge were obsessions of mine when I was a kid, and they're only a few characters I'm willing to spend 3rd party prices. Finally found a toon colored Galvs from Fanstoys that was a reasonable price from a collector who really took care of their stuff. The trinity is finally complete w/ FT toon Cyclonus and XTB toon Scourge. They're pretty much the centerpieces of my whole collection.

While Galvatron might have started out as Megatron, he became a totally different person. Seems that with a change of body (ex: Scourge, Cyclonus) there is often a change of personality. Bombshell, who became Cyclonus, stopped being the nasty, underhanded bastard that he was and turned into this character who well and truly cared about his own people That's a very rare trait among Decepticons who act more like piranha. On a third note: I don' t know if anyone else has ever noticed, but Galvatron has the best lines in the series.

Aw great this is yet another one of my favorite characters. The only incarnation of Galvatron I’m most familiar with was the g1 cartoon and movie, the unicorn trilogy ( although I don’t remember how he was portrayed that well it’s been years) and prime ( if you count it that is). I remember I used to dislike how Galvatrons voice was in g1 because I thought it was too goofy and not as menacing as Megatron or the his previous movie voice, but later it grew on me because it matched his insanity and of course I love Frank Welker’s work and it seems he did t have to put much strain to his voice. Not to mention with g1 I keep forgetting he’s supposed to be Megatron upgraded because he acts nothing like Megatron, which is good because he’s supposed to be different after all in the movie he wasn’t that different. I’m not very familiar with the transformer comics since I was more fan of the cartoon. I did read up to the Shockwave arc in early series but that’s it. I was very confused when I heard there were two galvatrons or why one of them was called Galvatron 2. Also because I saw some pictures of him and Megatron together, I thought Galvatron was his own person. Also why does he have a realistic human face it’s kinda scary and out of place if he’s a robot. But yeah I prefer if he and Megatron are the same person.

I got his toy for Christmas in 1986. It was fantastic. Many don't know this, but the original plan for Galvatron was that he came from the spark of Megatron following a battle for leadership during Starscream's coronation. The Sweeps, Cyclonus and Scourge were to be from previous leaders and Unicron recreated them. But I always liked the idea of the unicronians being a separate faction unto themselves, a nemesis to both the Autobots and Decepticons. Overall, I think Galvatron should be a separate character altogether, even though the G-1 version will always be the best.

I can't think of Galvatron as a separate character. To me, he is the same but changed. I'm aware of the original script version too. I do not like the idea of separating Galvatron from Megatron. At all! It's like removing Orion Pax from Optimus Prime.

@@RodimusPrimal I get where you're coming from. But it's been a sticking point for decades as to where Megatron ends and Galvatron begins, at least in the original continuity. Could Galvatron be suffering an identity crisis or the Cybertronian version of schizophrenia? Or does he intentionally distance himself from Megatron's shortcomings as a leader. I still favor them being separate characters, if nothing else to have conflict of leadership styles, plus the Unicronians would've made far better antagonists than the Quintessons. Imagine them going up against the Autobots lead by Rodimus and the Decepticons lead by King Starscream!

@@rodneyholmes5260 there is a cut line from Transformers the Movie where Galvatron flat out says that he is Megatron before the whole "First Prime, then Ultra Magnus, and now you!" Also, a cut line from The Return of Optimus Prime part 2 has Galvatron say to Optimus Prime "I killed you once as Megatron. I'll kill you again!" so really there isn't a disconnect even from the creators of the show as to who Galvatron is. Yes I agree, the Decepticons should have been more prominent in Season 3, but the writers were trying to do a lot more on a limited budget with heavy time constraints. Still, at the end of the day, G1 all the way!

@@RodimusPrimal You're right about those instances! It's so long since I watched the movie in full and the end of season 3. Looking back on many 80's cartoons, though they're fondly remembered (rightly so), I wish the creators put more effort in crafting better character development and storytelling. But I still love G-1 Transformers, glitches and all.

@@rodneyholmes5260 I think the creative juices where there but they were under heavy pressure to get these episodes out. As late as September of 1986 there were internal documents about how certain episodes needed script revisions and that animation was not yet finished. So when it came back from Japan (Toei and AKOM) it had to air promptly. It goes to show how much quality it could have been even compared to shows of today (not just Transformers!)

I say you can split the difference. Many continuities nowadays have Megatron name himself after Megatronus. Having Galvatron as some ancient warrior or Warlord who Megatron renames himself after could also work.

S3’s finale changing the leaders dynamic back to status quo honestly made me a little sad, I enjoyed Rodimus’s arc and Optimus taking the role back… kinda invalidated it.

16:00: Ironically... or maybe purposefully this name makes sense. Galvanisation is the process by which material is coated in another substance with 'galvanic' electrical power... It makes sense before that too, because Galvanisation is the empowerment and revigouration of a subject.

My favorite incarnation of Galvatron would be his IDW comics version because I actually like the idea of him being a separate character from Megatron. While it made sense in the 1986 movie and even in Age of Extinction for him to undergo a name change, it made no sense for Megatron to change his name in the Unicron Trilogy when he got powered up. Unless there's an outside force or something that changes Megatron into Galvatron to prompt the name change, I think it works best for him to be a separate character.

Just a small trivia. In the japanese version of energon, superlink, from the beginning of the series, megatron is always named galvatron since it's a direct sequel to micron densetsu.

I always loved Megatron’s evolution in Galvatron, but I also like IDW making him his own distinct character, a herald of Nemesis (Nova) Prime and undead being from the Dead Universe. *Spoilers ahead!* I looked up the ending of Cyberverse and I wish they’d have had Megatron X be Galvatron. Like that universe’s Megatron had not only created perfect Decepticons, but also evolved himself into a new form. But once again Cyberverse has disappointed me. At least those cons look like Tarn, but I’d have loved to see the purple warlord lead them into battle.

Galvatron in the G1 Transformers The Movie is is unbelievably powerful and intelligent - with all the leadership qualities of Megatron, because they are the same person. It was terrible the way Season 3 ruined the personality of Galvatron so that he was "insane" from the plasma bath. However, I suppose I can understand this from the point of view of a writer. After all, in Seasons 1 and 2, we repeatedly saw the theme of Megatron coming up with a plan to defeat the Autobots every episode; however, it was repeatedly Starscream's stupidity and/or selfish attitude that cost the Decepticons from winning. In Season 3 there was no Starscream. Instead, we repeatedly saw Galvatron's lack of patience and insane behavior cause the Decepticons to lose. I personally felt it would have been excellent to cure Galvatron of this mental problem at some point. For example, I was first hoping Galvatron would be cured of his mental problems in the episode called "Web World." The entire theme of the episode was curing Galvatron of his mental problems. Then, in the final episode of Season 3 - The Return of Optimus Prime - it appeared very clear the wisdom that was released from the Matrix of Leadership had cured Galvatron's mental problems. Unfortunately, in Season 4 we saw this was not the case. This really didn't matter, though, because Season 4 was so terrible. In reality, the Decepticons would never team up with any form of biological Headmasters, Targetmasters, or Powermasters.
