My current job is to coordinate a team to locally eradicate Gamba grass (Andropogon gayanus) within Kakadu National Park. This is an invasive grass from Africa. Many places in the north of Australia (including Kakadu National Park) still have a chance to stop this becoming one of the most significant losses of biodiversity across the northern parts of Australia. More information and NT legislation can be found on NT weeds government website Nt.gov.au
Gamba grass is a declared weed under section 7 of the Weeds Management Act 2001.
Destructive Gamba fires.
Gamba grass fires are faster moving, more destructive and have taller flames than native grass fires. Gamba grass fires burn with up to eight times the intensity of native grass fires.
