I think people feel off about DLC being in GOTY because its Elden Ring which sweeped already back 2022 and now it’s taking the place of other great games that released this year rather than it being in DLC form.

Idk who makes the rules for these awards but dlc is not a game it's an addon period.

Probably because nowadays most game editors are about "season passes", than actual expansions like in the old days. So depending on the year (most of the time), there wouldn't be enough entries.

It's already an achievement she even got nominated considering only 5 out of 100 in the jury are Japanese, but considering winners are determined by a blended vote between the voting jury (90%) and public fan voting (10%), it's really difficult to tell who the winner is this year. Even if Pekora gets the vtuber fandom voting for her, it doesn't affect the votes much as it did with Ironmouse last year.

It's freaking hilarious when jesse mention mobile legends. That game the is the equivalent of monster hunter in japan for southeast asia. Everyone is playing that game, from middle schooler to office worker. When on break, you can just pull out your phone and party up for 1 or 2 matches.

Agreed, I'm reminded of the 5 Minute Gaming News series, especially with how minimized the title of the podcast has become. Although the other series never had the title present in the thumbnail, it did change formats for a time that made it less recognizable. Appeal to the algorithm makes sense, but the loss of brand recognition isn't worth it to me.

1:10:45 Veilguard is not nominated in most categories because it doesn't deserve the nomination. I am a huge DA fan, but I think Veilguard is the worst in the series. I still liked it, mostly because it's mission structure, but I just think characters in Inqusition were better. The banter between party member, the interactions, dialogues - it all was better in Inquisition. DA2 had amazing narrative. Veilguard writing reminds me of some 7/10 young adult fantasy novels, and it's just not my style. Plus, some scenes are just bad and/or weird. They sometimes feel rushed or like something was cut from the game. The characters are acting weird. "Here, we've got a new ally, he has demon inside him" - and everyone is chill about it. No cool, well-written in-party conflicts - just one that feels forced at one specific moment, and then those characters almost immediately are cool with each other... Yeah. No. Like, come on guys, saying it's because Geoff is afraid of drama isn't the way :P

Especially since the DLC was way overhyped IMO. It was decent, but it was nowhere near the best DLC ever as it was made out to be. Lot of issues that people overlooked cause it's Elden Ring.

Open world games with lots of side activities and exploration but an urgent main story is one of my gaming pet peeves. Several of my all time favourite games have this flaw, I do not understand why it is so common. Especially with games that otherwise are stellar. I often have to do mental gymnastics to justify not pursuing the main story, usually something along the lines of that gaining more power and gear would increase the chances of success. Sometimes that makes sense, sometimes not so much. I greatly appreciate that in one of the new God of War games Kratos and Atreus actually does have that very discussion.

on the topic of helldivers, "everyone is playing it and now nobody is playing it". A lot of ppl are still playing it, and there has been an even bigger resurgence with the recent updates, the big stopping point was sony's PSN requirement that was a problem (and still is) until it was slightly eased out. The "nobody is playing it" came from the fact that streamers are not playing it. Because they have to move on to the next game. I also thought the game was dead, but the play count and my steam friends list think otherwise.

Eh no it was definitely dead for sometime and is still eh. They’re doing slightly better now after actually finally adding content and fixing some things but 25-30k on steam charts player base for a game that size is kinda mid. They could’ve retained way more if they didn’t go off track so hard.

It's very easy to say "nobody is playing it anoymore" when all the streamers stop playing it, because when they are, they are all doing it at once to the point that you think no other game exists.

All that's left is the grind, is my feeling. The game is played out in the true sense. I played with a squad of friends and I would say after about 30 hours you have seen this game and can move on if you feel no further pull to grind for resources that have no actual content reward on the other side. You can do highest difficulty missions within that 30 hour time frame and have seen all the mission and weather variables. I agree that it's silly to say nobody is playing it, but I wouldn't be surprised if much of the initial playerbase is cycled out by now and it is now in a lifespan that relies on new people coming in.

I still play it with my friends fairly frequently. It's just one of those games that you can pick up, play for a few days. And then leave it for a few weeks before coming back to it.

I personally will take the dissonance of the story saying, "This is a time important thing, but go spend a week of in game time building a self sufficient city in the corner of the map." Over the inverse of, "This is time sensitive, and you'll miss out on things if you decide to do other things. Just replay it if you want to see everything" I feel like good in between is games like Persona, where they are like, "Yes this is time sensitive, but if you're really good at time management, you can get to everything. If not we'll give you a NG+, where everything carries over. So you can get to everything." The thing that pulls me out of it is when the world is ending and there are still shops that are like, "Well I know you're trying to save the world, but on the off chance you do. I still need to make a living. So not even a discount."

01:10:45 Claiming TGA is afraid to nominate Veilguard because of backlash is pure copium. This is the same event that gave the much more divisive and harshly debated TLOU2 11 nominations and 7 wins (both records) including the much coveted GOTY. Neil Druckmann was arguably THE most controversial and divisive person in the industry at the time but he had no problems winning Best Narrative. Laura Bailey's character Abby was universally hated by gamerbros and it didn't stop her from winning Best Performance. Naughty Dog was under heavy fire for mistreating their employees with inhumane crunch hours but they handily won Best Game Direction. Veilguard simply wasn't a standout game this year. It's mediocrity encapsulated. Not a bad game by any means but it doesn't hold a candle to the actual nominees for GOTY or best RPG. I can agree with Gareth David-Lloyd deserving a nomination for his work as Solas, he did a flawless job and truly made the character come to life, but that's where the road ends for Veilguard.

But also always online accessibility is like the most intense form of it because its a straight up "stop you at the door" type of accessibility. Personally I think expansions/d;c and remakes/remasters shouldn't get to be in any game of the year outside of "Best DLC/Expansion" and "Best Remake/Remaster" respectively. But for FF7 Rebirth, that game is more a reimagine (and Sequel) than a remake/remaster so I would give it a pass in the awards (though not vote for it lol). Elden Ring Shadow of Erdtree is bigger than most games tbh, but I think it shouldn't be in anything than best DLC/Expansion category. I also think that the game award needs to stop forcing things up to or only limited to 5 games. Some categories need more, some need less. I don't get why Balatro is on any of those imo lol Once again, Doogs pushing HER homework on to the rest of us ;)

Honest opinion... DA:TV just wasn't that good. I mean, this is purely opinionated obviously. But Veilguards combat wasn't that special. The writing was really bad. The changes to the lore was not good on any level (IMO) And the lack of any proper roleplay aspects where you actually could make your character who you want them to be... Yeah no, it didn't deserve much of anything.

Not sure if it is just me or if it is other people too, but it seems like patch 7 on BG3 just caused more problems than it was worth. Obviously before that you had to use something like Nexus (what I use) for mods. In my experience they worked fairly well, the mod manager made things fairly easy, and I have a bad history with getting mods to work even (I am kind of a technophobe). But when patch 7 came out it absolutely destroyed third-party mods for at least a day or two. Which is kind of expected, but ever since that patch, especially with multiplayer games, I have had a ton of problems trying to play with mods. And the in game mod manager things theoretically sounds nice, but those mods are there do not seem to scratch the same itch as mods I have seen on Nexus. Maybe in time the in game mods will get better, but honestly I was fine with the way mods worked before hand. I just hope either by modders or by BG3 the wrinkles get ironed out sooner or later.

While not my favorite game, I do think Black myth should deserve more recognition and Metaphor as well (which is my fav game of the year). Those are UNIQUE and NEW IP (even if tried and true formula) that improve upon or push the genres forward. Erdtree is a beast. but it's a beast building upon Elden Ring. That's tough to beat. It deserves it's own category :/. Also Balatro (even though i love ZZZ) will win mobile . That game is super addictive.

Had this idea when talking about Shadows of theErdtree. I think there would be better for Expansions/DLC be made into its own category (might be little bit too clear about who wins it but still) but I think Remakes and Remasters should go for the same thing. Just cause like for Erdtree it's mechanics are pretty much same as the base game so it didn't change stuff like that but then Remakes/Remasters use stories that are already popular so even if they rework the mechanics and maybe some story beats you couldn't say it is a full new game (same as Expansion). So they should also have their own category and be left out from the other categories. Also fuck remasters and remakes : D
