For me it shows what the NES could have been ~ the sound font sounds so much better, more 'musical', and game design at this point was more solidified, developers had the foundations for ideas of what to go for already laid. Designed for fun on the go, key word being 'fun', a difficult game on the GameBoy is typically nowhere near as unforgiving as a NES title, exceptions apply of course. You also had wonderful experiments you really don't see anymore, look no further than Qix by Taito for an interesting new take on what puzzles can be. I've never cared for puzzle games, but now at 26, honestly the GameBoy ones I'm falling for.

Wario Land 2 gets my vote. Multiple paths through levels and you can't really die, so it's good for kids. For years I couldn't figure out how I'd gotten to a certain path in the game, because while I was playing my mom called me and when I looked at the gameboy again, there I was. Years later I found out that if you do nothing in the beginning and Wario stays asleep for a few seconds, and you don't press a button, you find a secret "exit" to the stage, where he slept through the whole thing.

I am still fascinated how fantastic graphics on the Gameboy look. I mean, they had a limited colour palette and keeping back in mind that the GameGear had more during that time, it is just mind blowing what the developers have reached on the Gameboy. My all-time favourite is my very first Gameboy game and that's WWF Superstars. I am a big Ultimate Warrior fan and listening to his entrance music was awesome. Other games that I count "all-time favourites" are: - TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan - Kirby's Adventure - Double Dragon 2 - Kwirk - Mario Land 2 - Tiny Toon Adventures - Probotector (Aka as Contra) - Gargoyle's Quest What I love about most games, you can finish them in 1 hr. Yes, the Gameboy has a special place in my heart and how amazing it was to "upgrade" that big boy with all the accessories 😂. And at least a great "flashback journey" with your vid again. The questions on the end let your vid feel special, and not just consuming. And as much as I love the questions, I love other people responses here. It's like finding new treasures with your recommendations❤️👍. Ah, and BTW. of course I would have shared my Gameboy with you😊.

I've got both, and I've got a GBC on the way. The main issue with the Game Gear is that it took so many batteries, and rechargeable in that era were mostly not very good. The one time I got to borrow one from a friend for a trip, it was great in most other ways, especially the ability to play it in the dark without an external light source.

Love The Game Boy and what I love about this game was the 1st wave was done to make little kids do great on them! One of the main reasons why people do not like Castlevania The Adventure as it was easy to go far, not hard like the non-portable Castlevania Games out there. Also loved the original Super Mario Land as it was like the original one in that you could only go one direction & no going back. You don't get lost in any level you know where to go at all times, which made for total fun! The games on the Game Boy were there to be played and loved by everyone that is why it will always be close to my heart! Still play these two games each year and it still entertains me to this day.

I think the only game I haven't played in your list was Catrap, but it sounds fun! I love the GameBoy games due to just their simple pick up and play style. You've already mentioned most of my favorites, but I'd add a few more like Kirby's Pinball Land, Pokémon (I will admit I prefer the remakes, though), Gargoyle's Quest, Metroid II (again, this one has some archaic design improved by the modern remakes, but still a good game), Adventure Island 1 & 2, and Duck Tales. Honestly, I feel like most original Game Boy games will stay fun for a long time. They're just so simplistic, even when you look at something like Link's Awakening or Metroid 2. Compared to the later versions or even the console versions, they're pretty simplistic. BUT, that simplicity in the graphics and gameplay is what keeps them fun. Like, later 3D games, didn't age well. PS1, Dreamcast, N64, Saturn, a lot of games that tried the 3D thing early on aged like milk. Even up into 360 and PS3, games aged poorly. But those old 2D games didn't age nearly as bad. And Game Boy being so simplistic, it almost has this timelessness to it where, no matter the year, I could load up a Game Boy game and have fun.

I never had a Gameboy growing up. I know the OG Gameboy came out in 1989, 9 years before I was born. The Gameboy Light and Gameboy Color came out the year I was born so I was obs too young to play on a Gameboy given that I was a baby. That and the Gameboy Light only came out in Japan just to bring that up. I REALLY wanted a Gameboy as a kid. Years later, I got my wish. I have not one but two Gameboys. I have a yellow Gameboy Pocket and a lime green/kiwi Gameboy Color, both of which I had for a year. I got matching wormlights for both of my beloved handhelds. Seeing other people talk about the Gameboy always puts me in such a good mood. I have 40 OG Gameboy games and 14, soon to be 16, Gameboy Color games. That makes it a total of 56 games. I'm aiming for 60. I keep my GB and GBC games in a bag and as my collection grows, I upgrade my bags. I know I have my Nintendo DS Lite, 2DS and my Switch Lite but the Gameboy is what I was missing as a kid. Of course, I love all of them equally 💞

I have my original Gameboy from the 90s. These were supposed for merchandise and should bring shops to buy more shampoo and so on. Somehow 4 of them landed bevor us for free. Long only with Tetris. I have all my games only Zelda came extra 3-4 years ago. I know also have a used GBC with backlight and SD cards and two Gameboy colours. Even a Japanese import. A Kirby game with build in gyro. But it's long ago when I played them the last time. Now the time has come

Kirby had a strong presence on the original Game Boy. And Kirby Star Stacker in particular is a lot of fun. It’s very Tetris-like, but easy to get obsessed, at least in my experience. Oh, also can’t forget Mario’s Picross.
@RetroBirdGaming2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Kirby is well-represented on most Nintendo handhelds and the Game Boy is no exception :)

Came here just to recommend Picross. Welll, Picross 2 actually, which was Japan only but can be had cheap on eBay.

One of my favorites has always been Avenging Spirit. It's an action platformer where you play as a ghost that can possess every enemy, all of whom move and attack differently, giving you a lot of gameplay variety. I had it as a kid, got it again a few years back and still enjoy it as much as back then. Unfortunately it is way on the pricey side (pricecharting listing it loose at 149$ right now, which sounds ridiculous to me...), but retro 8bit just had preorders for a limited edition on original hardware (already closed, sadly), so hopefully the price drops a bit. Or, you know, emulation is a thing :) Anyway, I'd recommend checking it out.

There must be a lot of people who want to be an old-school gangster and fill some wise guy chowderheads with lead. ;) Questionable box art aside, though, Avenging Spirit does sound like a cool game. Reminiscent of Space Station: Silicon Valley, maybe, or Geist? (I haven't played the latter, but SSSV is great!)

Nice to see someone talk about the Gameboy without mentioning Pokemon. XD.

I love the Game Boy...just not so much on the handheld. It's gotta be on a television with a controller for me! Since you mentioned import games I would like to nominate a couple Japanese exclusives for consideration - Chalvo 55 and Noobow are amazing GB games.

Precisely 🙂. I play portable systems on my retropie. It's easy to see everything and you don't need batteries lol.

I'm so glad I found this channel! Tons of laughs and touching nostalgia. I'm currently working on making an original Gameboy game complete with an instruction manual and physical cartridge, so it's nice to know there are still some Gameboy fans out there!

I had to look on with wistful wanting at other kids' game boys growing up. But, I got a GBA in 2001 and my life changed forever. Man, that thing was like my non-human best friend for so many years. So much time was spent on games like Mario Land 2, Mario Advance 1, Crash Bandicoot the Huge Adventure, Metroid Fusion and the one I love the most, Metroid Zero Mission.

97. I used to play it before wrestling tournaments, in-between, on the ride there and the entire way back.

97 was my year of Gameboy ownership. I still have it and it still works. Ice blue pocket edition. Killer instinct on gameboy was the best version ever

I recently replayed Pokemon Red. It still holds up. I forgot how much more the OG Pokemon games feel like true RPGs. The sense of adventure is greater with the more impact inventory control has and lack of information given through gameplay. There's limited EXP and money available so choices and battle outcomes matter more.

Tecmo Bowl. Sports games don't get mentioned often, but if you like them then Tecmo Bowl is my recommend for best on the GB.

The first Batman game is one I return to regularly. Its not at all like any other Batman game, and is more of a mario style platformer. One of the Gameboys best I reckon!

I never cared for the actual Game Boy (or any hand-held console for that matter) but I've loved my Super Game Boy ever since I got it as a kid (now I have a Super Game Boy 2 board inside a Super Game Boy 1 cart). My collection for it has always been the same 3 games: Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Metroid II: Return of Samus, and the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (my favorite of the 3).

Kids today don't understand what it was like being a kid in the 80's & 90's. They have their games downloaded on their iPhones or whatever devices they use & start playing. They get to choose from 1000's of free games or just games in general. So let me tell you when I was a kid when the Gameboy came out. It was a new idea for handheld gaming. So we didn't have 1000's of games to choose from because that didn't exist. The gaming market along with everything else was really small. There was no internet to look up things to see if they were good or not. Because it was handheld they didn't rent them at video rental stores. I believe Gameboy games were $50 each. So if you wanted a game you had to ride, drive down to a store location that wasn't to big just to buy a video game. Because of this & cost, I only had like 5 games. Again there is not save states when you play them & I don't think game shark was out for this system or Game Genie for Codes yet. Again games with no saves. So if you had a game over you would also have to restart these games.

I started with Gameboy color and Warioland 3 was prob one of my favorite games on that thing...played it again last year (after 20+ years) and it was just as fun and it almost felt like a new game.
