Another great concept to add to our playing. Thanks Q! I am also including my bass drum in some of these to add another dimension in my sound. For example, on a seven note grouping I will use a double paradiddle in the hands between the snare and toms and add the bass drum hit for the seventh note. I think it sounds pretty cool! Thanks again Q!

Hi Quincy! Thank you for this lesson, very helpful. Could you make a video on soloing with less instruments ? Say, ride, snare, bass and hats ? I sometimes find myself in situations where I bring only the minimum equipment, and I find it hard to be creative in my solos with the minimum gear. Thank you and all the best !

Great lesson, as always. To my mind, these groupings are the letters & words in the language of drumming. Combine them to make phrases (sentences and paragraphs). I think 3s, 5s, & 7s are the most interesting, as they cross the beats/barlines to make longer and more complex phrases.

Hello Mr. Davis! I know i am asking to much questions, so it´s ok when you don´t reply to all of them. Here are some more: 1. How do i learn to play sraight-ish? (three ideas: 1 taking the first and fourth stroke of a quintublet to find something between 8th notes and a shuffle. 2. taking the first and fifth stroke of a septublet to find st between 8th notes and a shuffle, or 3. just trying by feeling to find st between...). 2. How can rhythmic illusions be applied to jazz? 3. In wich (thousand) ways could double bass drum playing being applied to jazz? 4. How could the butterfly roll be brought into jazz? 5. How did Buddy Rich play a one handet roll? 6. How did he play it in the music? 7. Your video about press rolls opened the door to a new world for me. Could you please make one or two lessons about out of time playing... Btw. i am very happy about this video of today. Yesterday i was worried, cause usually you post on monday. Even if you don´t answer any of my questions, i am really glad you are here! Cheers from Germany

Hey Q! Do you have any insights you could share about drumming for Free Improv or Avant Garde or anything like that? I don't have a huge background in Jazz. Part of me struggles between knowing how to play both Out and In at the same time. I also feel like I need to feel some kind of pulse in order to play with feel, even if it is a fluctuating pulse. Another part of me feels like I'm playing with folks that don't want any pulse at all! LOL. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I should probs buy a lesson or two at this point.

Playing with people who groove helps us learn how to play with groove. Playing with folks who play free help us play free. Playing with folks who do both help us do both. Hope that helps!

@@drumqtips I learned something new yesterday, and it is the difference between Free Jazz and Free Improvisation. I have been studying folks like Elvin and Blakey, and unaware of where Anthony Braxton and Derek Bailey are coming from. Very weird stuff.
