I only buy games/consoles that look interesting to me and I can actually see myself playing those games/consoles from time to time. Nostalgia for me doesn't have to be exclusive to my childhood. I've bought plenty of retro consoles I never owned as a kid (Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2 etc). Despite that, I'm still glad I branched out as I've created new nostalgic memories from my 20's that will stick with me as I get older. Collecting shouldn't be about buying games for their monetary value. You should really only be buying games that give you personal enjoyment. I feel like many people nowadays are collecting video games for the wrong reasons and that's why they end up getting burnt out.

It's a common mistake. -Collect stuff -Get burned out -Sell it -Regret selling it -Buy it back at 10x the price My suggestion is that when you get burned out...box everything up (extremely well) and put it in storage until you get that itch again. Original games/consoles/hardware are only going to get more expensive and harder to find as time goes on. That burned out feeling is only temporary, even if it feels like it's not.

I refocused my collection and definitely don’t regret it. I kept everything I have nostalgia for or good memories with and sold the rest. Essentially trimmed the fat. I was able to pay off the mortgage and put a good amount into the kids’ college fund. I will never completely stop collecting and will continue playing/buying modern games as well, but I’ll no longer just buy in bulk or just to buy. That being said this is a great example why you should buy physical and not digital. I was able to make thousands of dollars back with my physical collection where someone with a digital collection will get nothing.

People get burned out because the value of the retro games are based on people's emotional attachment to the games. Not everyone will have the same emotional investment in a game. Some people's junk is another person's treasure. That emotional attachmrnt can wear you out. Those value (feelings and dollars) fluctuate greatly.

My issue is the amount of collectors who entered the hobby in the last 5 years mainly to amass large quantities of games or to have shelf queens to support their Facebook egos. I’ve been collecting since the 90’s and I can confidently say there was a huge shift in roughly 2014 where it really became about bragging rights more than being a hobby for people who loved playing older titles.

The problem in 2015 I saw was, with the new systems is its not drm free meaning. You dont own the game, it was just rented to you. Some single player games, you had to be online for no good reason. And thats when I did see older gamers bragging about how they really own the games...........

For me for Cartridges gaming, I’m starting to collect just cartridges now. I used to collect it CIB because I love the cover art of the boxes a lot. But I recently decided to get custom cases like you guys have, to help mitigate the cost, I tend to collect a lot of jrpg’s/rpg’s as it’s my favourite genre of games so it’s fairly expensive. This way I’m not paying $150 extra just to get a really good box of a game, where as now I’m paying $6 for the custom case that looks basically the same and I still get to enjoy the game. Sure there is going to be some games I’ll still collect CIB for, like for example The Legend of Zelda series, it’s my favourite series of all time so I love these game and they hold a special place in my heart so I’m going to get those CIB. Where as games like Super Punch-Out or Yoshi’s Island I’m like, “do I Really need it CIB?” Probably not. And this way I can focus on getting the games I want to play and have in my collection, Cause at the end of the day that’s what I do it for, is so I can play the games I want to play. And I don’t want to miss out on these awesome games just cause I wanted a very good box for it. And if collecting would ever go down in price then maybe I can collect boxes for these games again but for now these custom video game cases are great placeholders and they look really great on the shelf.

PS1 used to be my go to system to collect for because I was always able to find them mixed in with music CDs at thrift stores. In the last couple years I haven't found a single one. Now, PS2 and PS3 games are more common there so I've switched my focus to those. While PS4 games are getting pretty cheap, they aren't that fun to play for me. It sucks having to wait for the game to download/install before playing it...I'd rather just toss it in the system and deal with loading screens (which have never been a big issue to me).

For long-time collectors, it's a great time to change their approach. I recently downsized, selling off lots of games and hardware that I had essentially hoarded. I used much of the proceeds to buy things that I had never found "in the wild" after many years of hunting -- promo items, uncommon games, missing pieces, condition upgrades, etc. I also discovered the amazing deals widely available on Japanese games. It opened up a whole new world of collecting and gave me new goals. After shifting my focus to improving the quality of my collection, it has never been better. Next focus is enjoying the games and hardware more regularly 😅.

I'd have to agree, collecting does kind of suck right now. I don't have any plans on purging my huge collection or anything but it's a lot more challenging to find anything I consider worthwhile out in the wild. And I don't even want to get started on the market value on things these days. As someone that's been collecting on purpose for about 20 years, I miss the good old days. I don't have any aspirations of building a complete collection for a given system, I just want physical copies of games that I like. Unfortunately, some of those games are big money and in many cases I can't justify it. I perhaps foolishly still hold out hope that I'll come across those expensive titles at a second hand sale (that hasn't already been picked over by the local scalpers) for dirt cheap one of these days, but the results so far haven't been that great the past several years. Now 10 years ago that was a different story...

Woo I can finally comment on a current video! So my take, I don’t have a complete collection for any generation, and I don’t typically buy older generation games. My collection consists of games that were current at the time and includes many gems. I’ve always wanted my basement to be my retro area as I’ve still got an NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Dreamcast, PS2&3 (with games on ps1-3), Gamecube, Xbox,and Xbox 360, Wii and Wii U. I keep the Switch, PS5 and Series X upstairs for current and last gen games, and honestly I don’t have time to play everything. Maybe things will change since I’m almost done with grad school, but I still have husband and father responsibilities, my house was built in the 50s and constantly needs work, I’ve got two busted project cars and a daily driver running on hopes and dreams. I have maybe 2-4 hours a week for gaming. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug and I have so many CIB gems to fund my other hobbies. I love gaming, but don’t know what to do. As expensive as current gen gaming is and will always be, I may buy current gen consoles new or after a price drop, and buy games when they go on discount. I rarely buy games for $70, and after paying $90 for the GT7 anniversary edition, and the disappointment that followed, I’m never buying a game full price again. The only redo I paid retail for a Series X and PS5, (scalpers can eat a bag o’dicks), is because my PS4 and Xbox One were the original models that I bought a year after release with Black Friday deals. I didn’t do mid gen upgrades to the PS4 Pro or the One X. And I still play on a 1080p TV for now, so the biggest game changer for me with current gen is the shorter loading times. Dying in a game like Demon’s Souls remake or Returnal is a lot less frustrating when you’re back in the action almost instantly. I do lament how useless physical discs are trending now like with MW II only having a few mb of data on the disc. But at least it serves as a physically transferable license you can loan gift or sell for as long as the servers are active. Being able to play the classics off grid is at least the biggest reason to hold on to them. Long post, hopefully it was coherent and not just the ramblings of an old man. Cheers and happy gaming.

For older disc based non-Nintendo games (PS2, PS3, PS4, xbox, xbox 360, xbox one), if it’s used it is usually cheap and most likely won’t go up in price. The price is only high if you want the brand new sealed copies of the nostalgic games. Even then the price for these games are close to msrp when they sold back then so it’s not that bad. N64 cib is mostly cheap except for the 1st party Nintendo games (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon)

I think, for me, it got to a point where my location is/was wrong for collecting. Being in Ireland, there's very little stock (of quality), its expensive (as are most things here), and having space is also a pain in our current house. It was way easier to move to PC for modern and emulation for retro. For me I get to still enjoy the games I love on my terms, and for me, that's where my retro itch kicks in. I also found the acquisition of games to be a way of coping with a bad mental health situation so I'd get more joy just buying the games instead of playing them. Full respect to those who do enjoy collecting games, and I really appreciate seeing those smaller yet curated collections instead of the "I have everything" collections. Tbh, my collecting has now switched to sneakers and vinyl because I can start from scratch (nearly) and curate them properly so they fit my tastes, unlike the game situation I was in.

Actually you nailed it, alot of the "trends" are just that click baity. A group of youtubers that will remain nameless would all do similar videos to try to game the algo at the same time. Includes the "im selling my game collection" - and "I need a break" thumbnail videos are a couple examples. I think thats in general is what sucks about game collecting in 2023, theres alot of scumbaggery, dishonesty and disingenuous people that somehow got attached to the "head" of the retro gaming community. Im just playing games, collecting and remembering old times and memories. Its not about the dollar signs and money to me never was. For others, once again who shall remain nameless, thats their top priority the money, disguised as nostalgia and pretending to relate to their youtube audiences via manipulation. You have to ask a serious question, why do prices keep going up on retro? Anyone? Inflation, yeah sure actually. But the constant hyping of value some of these clowns base their youtube channels around making it more about the monetary value then actually enjoying the hobby of "Game playing" I think is a obvious answer. If you want a future case study for this theory, keep an eye on VHS tapes.

As more of a Genesis and Nes collector I'm happy with the hobby, just got super baseball 2020 for cheap an incredible overlooked snk genesis gem. and NES games are plentiful. Got at least a dozen new carts to try. Collecting for PS1, and Dreamcast is way more affordable if you can settle for disc only. You said it Be where the people aren't shopping , great advice you just kind of know when a game is a must have for your collection goals getting you excited, and what games are the result of influencers, or impulse purchases. And those purchases have diminishing returns on your investment in the hobby. I've definitely felt burned out on games collecting in the past. And just took a long break, rather than selling everything. Good mention of classic Xbox, some really ambitious colorful and strange games only on that system like Crazy Taxi 3 or Battle Engine Aquilla, and their all stupid cheap for now. But I mean its the console on the market right next to the gamecube. So I could see gamecube fans turning to that just to explore another side of that era.

Finally, someone who can say exactly what this discussion really is lol. I started game collecting awhile back and I have missed a few boats here and there, but nothing I trully regret. Collecting has gotten more expensive, but the thing most people don't realize is that literally EVERYTHING has gotten more expensive not just games. That's just a natural occurrence as the economy ages regardless of what the product or service is. The issue is that everything is getting more expensive but paychecks are remaining stagnant for most individuals. I have a decent paying job so I can afford most things in game collecting but that doesn't mean I don't notice prices rising or having to be careful with my purchases. Also, most people who are ok with spending big bucks in current gen hardware and games but not on older vintage examples are like this due to the "because its new" mentality. This is a mentality that the more common folk have in general. They figure that if its old then it should be cheap and its new then the high price is justified. For some stuff this is true, but not for games. The reason you hear more people griping about it now is because of the rise of social media and the number of new individuals trying to collect stuff who don't know any better. Finally, if there was a system I'd recommend collecting for that wasn't mentioned here I'd say go for the PSP. Most people don't collect for it because of the excuse of "mod vita play psp on it", but the PSP is awesome and if you want physical games its a treasure trove of hidden gems and affordable bangers. While everyone else keeps looking at the DS, 3DS and perhaps the Vita as well, I've recently been going in hard on the PSP. I love collecting for the PSP and I love playing it just as much. Even the first four Final Fantasy games could be found here and, besides the pixel remaster coming out soon, the PSP versions are seen as the definitive experience for those FF games. Well thats my two cents gents, hope you're both having a great day and stay cool! 😉👍

I think you have a lot of good points. I remember when people would sell their whole collection in one box. Now, if they held onto the console for years, chances are it works, has all the cables, etc. And most people don't know or trust GameStop. I bet if you are in there often enough, you can offer to buy it directly from them, cutting out GS. entirely. With yard sales most people don't know what they have, don't want to pack it back inside, don't to drive across town, so you can go a little cheaper. The Wii is a good console to collect for. I bought several decent Wii games brand new for $10. And even clunky stuff like Castlevania Judgement or Tournament of Legends aren't great, you will probably get your money's worth.

Collecting has been slow in recent years. This year it has sped up for me, so I’m into collecting games CIB, dvd’s, VHS, blu ray special editions, and more recently Star Wars Lego sets. I’m in the process of getting a glass door book shelf for books games etc, possibly collapsing a few rows for Lego sets, all in protective cases. Collecting really is what you make of it. If it’s a hassle, then it’s not fun. For me, finding new songs to listen to on KZbin was a way of gaining access to music I wouldn’t have known existed with all of these mixes and playlists. I great all other collecting the same way, that if you collect regularly it is worth while. If you go on hiatus, you can always come back to it because chances are the games will cheaper and more people will posses CIB, factory sealed, and mint condition games. If you have a place to present them, usually that’s the goal. Then you can relax a few weeks, then go at it. I recommend paying attention to trends like they’re saying, the market, demand; eBay, Mercai, retail. Stay in the know and you’ll have more fun than you can imagine. It’s good to immerse yourself on KZbin, discord Instagram; gaming community friendly places make collecting worthwhile. When you start treating it like a chore then it’s not, fun, so you just gotta have that winning mentality, just like a skilled musician exposed themselves to many sounds, not just what they play.

I've taken a break from heavy collecting but still pick up once and a blue moon. Being that I have held onto most of my stuff and have a big collection I stay more focused on what I get. Prices are high but what isn't anymore lol. All hobbies go up and down in price so this should not be much of a surprise. I think it's silly to purge your collection because it cost more to collect them now but everyone is in a different situation for why they sell. My entire collection is boxed up while I remodel my house to sell. I am not using them but I sure will not sell them. Great video guys

I think it’s a lot of two things. One, people are a little jaded because of how collecting used to be and don’t want to except it’s rise in popularity. And then two, is instant gratification. People want things now and that comes at a higher price. eBay and games stores are gonna sell at full value. People are less willing to hunt thrift/pawn shops and yard sales. With patience the deals are truly out there even on the consoles like GameCube. Just in the last couple months I’ve found Go Go Hypergrind for $2, yes $2, and Eternal Darkness for $35. Both CIB. Now do I get this lucky super often? No, but I’m patient and do find great deals often.

I think older collectors are just upset that more people are getting into the hobby. I’m a newer collector and so in their eyes I’m part of the problem but that’s just what happens over time. They’re also seeing places that used to sell all games for dirt cheap actually sell them for their market value. Places like goodwill and thrift stores are actively looking up prices and selling them what they’re “worth”
@ezrider1968 Жыл бұрын
Yep, a local charity thrift near me has recently started bumping up their prices on games, books, dvd/blu ray sets, etc. On one hand it’s a bummer that I’m not getting as many crazy deals as I used to, but you can’t expect desirable stuff to stay cheap forever. Glad to get the deals while I could.

Yesterday my local EZpawn went from $1 to $10 on Mario Wii games, bought those along with gamecube Smash bros and windwaker for $15 each. Even at 15 I picked those up in a heartbeat.

Collectors want to pretend that retro video game collections are still niche. They aren’t. It is very popular these days. It’s easier to blame new collectors and/or reselling as the culprit but it’s all simple supply and demand. I’ve been around a long time and funny thing is people complained about prices a decade ago and hated KZbinrs for bringing attention to the hobby.

Maybe I came in later or maybe it's because I'm adult and can afford to spend a tad more... But for me I've been getting the games I want slowly from eBay (I live in Montana and don't have other options) and it's been fine. Prices if anything seem to be coming down this year -vs- last. I've got every system from the NES to OG Xbox (and was recently gifted a PS3). I buy the games I know I'll sit down and play. My collection is pretty light gun heavy and it's all hooked up to a CRT so they all work. I much prefer this collection to anything modern. I do have an xbox one that I occasionally play horizon 5.

Yeah the prices are pretty similar to last year! Nice man! Sounds like you got a good collection going! Cheers!

So, before going into this video.... I have been collecting since the days of the PS1 and PS2, mostly RPGs or games that had real interesting box art. I bought out an entire stockpile of games, new and used, from GameCrazy once that went under for anywhere from $1 to $22 at the most. My game collecting has been sporadic to say the least, with myself stopping pretty much towards the end of 2019, only to resume within the past couple years. That being said, I think no matter when you begin or continue your collection, you will find that the medium has shifted all that much. I still see older games from the NES and Genesis being sold for fairly cheap. Comparatively, the job I've worked at since then has given me a multitude of raises in compliance with the minimum wage increases and has allowed me perhaps more spending power than I otherwise have had in the past. For example: Purchasing Conker's Bad Fur Day 5 years ago may have cost me $50 to $60 at its highest, but the $120+ I would pay for it nowadays is perhaps easier to acquire than it was before. With my house paid off, my car paid off, I have a variable increased spending limit per paycheck, besides just base pay. $60 to me back then was perhaps what $200 to $250 would be for me now in comparison. Older generations having worked the same steady job for at least 10 years would definitely see that. If you have kids though, spending $50 to $60 way back when is perhaps seen as spending that nearly $300 today. For me, the medium hasn't had a huge impact, but for others I can see why that is. I still would not pay for Pokemon Box because the price isn't $500, it's more like $1500. Clayfighter Sculptor's Cut isn't $300 to $500, it's more like $1000 to $1200. I still continue collecting, and I get games at reasonable prices through my own connections. In other words, real collectors are doing real trades. Also....not to throw a lot of shade, but I will not deal with people who are doing very underhanded things. If something is technically "for sale" in a case of hundreds of other items for sale, and the owner just decides to jack the price up by $100% because he "didn't really want to sell it," I will just completely stop all trade with the person and call them out. Sorry, Pat the NES Punk. By the way, they had 4 of the exact same item. I wanted to spend money, but bad practice like that is one reason why I just stopped for around 2 years. Major advice I can give someone looking to spend money for collecting is to pick a number you are willing to spend. Do research on the items you're looking for, not just gloss over them. When it comes down to it, set a personal limit you are looking to spend for that item. In the long run, you will save a lot of money. Also, haggling can be your best friend, just asking if they can come down on the price at all. Sometimes it's just thinking real hard where the owner will actually drop the price down themselves (only really happens irl trading for me though). I still think you can do a reasonable amount of game collecting. Your experience doesn't have to be all bad. The latest game I actually picked up was an Almanac for the 3DO, just because it was complete in-box and it was only $6. Before that it was a Harvest Moon: Back to Nature PS1 game without Manual for $35.

Yeah. So this video is why context is important. I do a lot of types of collecting and video game collecting has gotten MUCH worse in the past 10 years. I started collecting in 2014, when I was in graduate school. Back in the early 2010s game collecting was pretty straight forward. Certain consoles were always pricey, i.e. Saturn, N-64, etc. But most major consoles were fairly affordable to collect for minus certain games that were indeed rare. The funny party back then is most rare games weren't usually great games. So for the completionist, they needed the rare high priced games but for everyone else collecting was affordable. The other difference of this time was games were easily accessible in the wild. I used to go to a flea market and get stacks of Genesis and original Xbox games for next to nothing. I wouldn't by anything in the 20ish dollar range and up unless it was really clean, complete, and sold in a re-sell shop. Here's what I see today and yes its a big problem. First, there are no true games to be found in the wild. What I don't like about this is it seems that the retro game collecting world has manucfactured scaricity. If you collected in earlier decades you know some of these games are not rare Some of these games were like 90s sports card, they just made SO Many, and rightfully so these were mass market consoles. What has happened now is resellers have bought up all the stock that used to circulate freely in the wild. This has artifically driven up prices on what I believe are common games. I would imagine at some point this bubble will burst because again Video games weren't necessarily created with collecting and scarcity in mind they were created to be played. That doesn't even get into the distinction between clean copies, sealed copies, and copies with original packaging. This distinction doesn't mean a whole lot in my opinion, as a lot of dirty copies of games are also selling for WAY to much. The reason you know its a problem is unlike other collecting worlds, retro games are horrible to determine comps on. If you look at Ebay sold options on any given game, you will see the wildest fluctuation on prices sold, even among the exact same condition such as Cart only. I'll finish by just sharing a story. A few weeks ago, a brewery near my house hosted a retro gaming market featuring a major re-sell store in my area and a bunch of solo sellers. I was literally appalled by the prices I saw at this market. I saw prices of 50-100 dollars for fairly common carts for SNES and Genesis. I talked to one re-seller and he even acknowledged that his Carts were in reproduced cases with reprinted artwork. I went home opened by box full of carts and found most of those games that I saw being sold. I paid probably a few bucks for many of them and have duplicates of a few simply because they were games my family and I loved but others mostly hated. I meandered through the different stands about one hour after arriving and noticed very few of the sellers moved any product if any. And thats the state of game collecting, a bunch of re-sellers with really no respect for comps or order who have seemingly bought up games that were NEVER rare. There hope is to prey on the casual who gets nostalgic and they are seeing enough money doing it now. But yes that has ruined it for people who were truly in the hobby. Your large collection just got a lot less liquid if Sonic 2 now costs like 30 bucks and up. The other side of collecting back in the day is it was low cost and low risk. If you wanted to collect for something else you could get rid of what you had or trade it and get what you wanted. Not today. All that being said who hurts the most is people who genuinely want to visit these consoles who never experienced them first hand. Theres a bigger case for now more than ever for emulation.
@GamingOffTheGrid Жыл бұрын
Yeah emulation will continue to rise in the future from some of the reasons you mentioned! Cheers!

How I am with video game collecting is I only buy stuff that I think looks cool or I have nostalgia for everything else is a waste of money for me and when I say looks cool I mean something that I'll actually play not just look at on my shelf

$10 for an NES game is a lot when you used to be able to get them for a dollar or less. I used to be able to get ANY video game that showed up at my local, and semi-local Goodwill's and Salvation Army's for .60 cents a piece. Now it's rare to even find a video game in the store because they sell all that stuff online now, and if you do happen to find a game in the store, they are marked up to $5 to $10 regularly, and sometimes even more than that. A lot more. And rummage sales are exactly the same.. So, there has been a significant shift in the retro video game market in the last 10 years or so. I have pretty much come to a complete halt in trying to actively build my collection. I still get the occasional game for gifts and whatnot, and if I happen to be at a flea market, or yard sale or something, of course I'm gonna look at the video games. But, for the most part, it is not the same at all, too easy to drop $200 - $300 in a weekend, and it's really just too unaffordable.

My rule is to collect what is cheap and readily available at the time. Long ago it was the NES, SNES, Genesis. Then it was the PS1, PS2, GameCube and N64. Now it's the PS3, PS4, XBOX 360, XBONE and Wii. Just look at what's available in your price range and try to get what you're interested in from that group. If you get stuck on wanting to get the stuff you can't afford, you will always be unhappy with your situation. Also, very few have everything; seeing these huge collections online is unrealistic for most people. It's the exception not the rule.
