Let's listen to and talk about the Safi'Jiiva theme from Monster Hunter World Iceborne! I've (unfortunately) never played Iceborne so it was a ton of fun to listen to this for the first time. The part where Safi'Jiiva gets fixed on a player is so intense, it really made me want to play Iceborne just so I could experience this music in context!

when safi focuses on you and the music narrows, you can really feel the intensity of safi's stare; in a way, as safi focuses on you, so the music focuses on safi. That intensity and the muffling of several of those more triumphant parts really makes you understand that this is no longer a four players vs. one monster hunt because it's now a duel, just you and safi alone in safi's magnificent arena, an ant and an emperor.

A nice touch as well, when Safi'jiiva drops his "Sapphire Star", the music cuts away moments before the explosion. Even the music tries to run and hide from the Dragon's power in that one singular moment.

Remember: each ''location'' on the Monster Hunter planet has its own legends of gods and everything else Safi'jiiva is probably the Sapphire Star, just as Shara Ishvalda is also one of the 5 (which changes and terraforms the earth in creation) It doesn't mean they are real gods, but their legends are perpetuated because their forces are catastrophic

I disagree, I find Capcom music to be a bit overrated. Even in Monster Hunter only has a few songs I would consider to be really damn good, and Most of them are in Monster Hunter World and Rise. Which has improved versions of a lot of themes. I for one cannot understand why people love SF3's OST. SFV's is so much better. Oh but Breath of Fire had some good tracks alright. Something worth noting about how this functions mid-game: Safi'jiva is a unique fight. There are three stages to it. Each stage has an energy meter Safi'jiva will draw from to heal itself. In each individual attempt, it will sap a certain amount of energy before moving to the next zone, and the game "remembers" the amount of energy Safi drains. Every time you enter the quest, you have twenty minutes to do as much damage as possible before it leaves and you have to do it again. As you do this, it will gradually deplete more and more energy from the reserves. It will only drain energy from a level a limited number of times before moving on to the next, but usually, you wouldn't pass level 2 in your first attack without serious effort. Drain is increased depending on parts broken, and overall rewards are increased depending on energy drained. Even if you get completely murdered, that's fine. As long as you've forced it to deplete some energy, you've contributed to the raid (oh yeah, the progress of everyone in the Gathering Hub is compiled together until one of the parties gets a kill). This brings in the context of the final theme. You've cornered the beast. If you can simply just keep up the pressure before the time runs out, you'll win. But don't forget, this creature can and will maul you if it gets the chance. Either you slay it, or it runs off again. The theme has parts of heroism and victory, but there are parts that apply a ton of pressure as well. Overall, it is an incredible theme for one certain Gentle Simple Sailor.

On the album, they actually identify as two different songs, which makes sense, considering the two forms seem almost like two different fights entirely the first couple of matchups. That's one of the reasons why Shara is up there with my favourite monsters.

I never actually noticed the music changes when Safi is focusing on you. That is really creepy the way they muffle and distort the music. Lore wise, Safi/Xeno is some sort of elder dragon that feeds on the bioenergy of other elder dragons. The more energy it consumes the more powerful it gets. The way it consumes the bioenergy is through a specialized organ in its chest. If you look at Xeno you can see that its chest is bright glowing red. This is because the organ gives off a massive amount of heat when operating. The organ is also responsible for circulating bioenergy throughout the body. Basically it functions like a heart, but with energy instead of blood. Considering that Safi is an older, much more powerful Xeno, it is no surprise you can hear its heartbeat. The organ in its chest would be packed with bioenergy it has absorbed over time. When Safi focuses on one player it releases more energy, so the "heart" organ needs to work harder and pump more energy through the body. To think that they even represented that in the music is crazy.
@savitar31
@savitar31 2 жыл бұрын
I personnally think that the heartbeat you're hearing it's yours, the hunter. Mainly because you can only hear it when Safi is focused on you, other hunters can't hear it. When you think about it, you got a godlike dragon who wants to kill especially you, it's terrifying
@crazy13alex

@@savitar31 But the steady rhythm makes no sense if it belongs to a hunter. You'd expect it to be that way even without enmity. Safi's theme goes hard with the target effects. Particularly in the final phase, with the heartbeat/percussion/distorted noises interfering with the track and subduing the heroic parts. Never faced Safi myself but his theme continues to trend of putting the hunter into the theme at times that World/Iceborne likes to do. And in this is even interacts with the hunters as well. Becoming muffled as it targets you specifically. Brief moments of herioc sounding notes really throw the hunter into the theme as a small but heroic defiance against this otherwordly threat that is utterly terrifying and powerful. But the final spot is far more heroic, as you rise to the challenge and his strength. I'm sure someone already answered this but yes, it's heavily hinted at the Xeno and Safi are creatures from outer space, parasitic perhaps due to them sucking the energy from fallen creatures to power themselves. The "Saphire star' is mentioned often in the game to 'guide you'and was what originally guided the commision to the new world I believe. This saphire star ends up being Xeno, but it's later revealed Safi was another comet that crashed in another region and was much more concealed and able to reach it's adult state. The final area of the Safi fight also is surrounded in what seems to be eggs like the one Xeno emerges from implying more are on the way and Safi is protecting them to perhaps invade the planet or something.(or simply to explain where Safi's keep coming from? idk)

If you played World, you should recognise some of the melodies (the choir for one), since they're call backs to Xeno'Jiiva's theme. While Safi isn't my favorite theme, one part that made it stand it out to me is not the music itself but the choice to silence it completely when safi drops the sapphire star bomb. It's incredibly impactful! That said, thanks four your insights and obligatory request to do Alatreon, Arch-tempered Velkhana (maybe compare it with normal Velk?) and Magnamalo! Also wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on Shara Ishvalda, since that's quite a different style imho.

I heard a bit of original Xeno'Jiva theme in the final phase, reminded me more than in earlier phase. Along with how it itself softens in the lower reaches, perhaps it's a signifier of a return to its base primal instincts as it's more and more threatened.

@@DaviVasc You know, I think I had it wrong and was maybe dazzled by the trumpets or something at the time, same tone, but going back and forth between the two, at least of Xeno phase 1 and Safi final phase, I think there are similarities, though Safi's is faster and I think Proof of a Hero sort of occupies the space where I think Stars at our Backs is referenced a little in Xeno's.

Ahh man the heartbeat always gets me pumped when listening to these pieces. And the sudden near silence when Safi'Jiiva performs Sapphire of the Emperor is just so suspensful. It almost sucks in all the sound of the area except for the attack's FX. (Video for the attack: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmqVimSVi6ibnpo ) Also for some trivia, these two pieces are titled as: The Emperor Emerges From Under the Veil (phase 1) and For the Emperor's Amusement (final phase). Course, I initally thought it was in terms of Safi finding it funny but no. This final battle is entertaining, it has been pushed down to that last area, but Safi finds this amusing, entertaining. And that is honestly terrifying since it seems so capable of intelligence as an Elder Dragon, but also as a potential otherworldly creature. Have many people asked for Alatreon's theme? It's an interesting one I think for the time signature differences. Definitely one to keep in mind!

Drawing Safi's ire is a masterpiece moment in the song and the fight. Fighting him and getting to those parts especially for the first time is just epic and theatrical. Woven with his super and his own dragon noises, it's honestly one of my favorite encounters in any video game from everything that Capcom got right all in one fight.

I love how the theme perfectly reflects the emotions of the player and even mimics some of the attacks, like the buildup in the targeting variant imitates the kind used when Safi uses his "hide or die" attack (8:54) (9:13). At first the player is curious and probably pretty confidant, then you notice the time limit, and things get tense, with the occasional heroic dodge or knockdown, but on the whole the tension is constant, racing against the clock. Until you get to the bottom, it's now or never, let's go, things are still nerve-wracking as you race the clock but you have a chance now, you can win, and hopefully you do.

Holy shit I commented on your Fatalis video asking about this song but I did not expect you doing it anytime soon. Another good MHW song would be the Guiding Lands Battle Theme. (The Original, not the updated one.) It has really nice call backs to all the other Areas of the game, making it a fitting final area. A few things not mentioned in the video most likely because Davi did not have much to say about it. There is also a Mounting Variant for all 3 phase themes. I think the Aggro theme also slightly changes per Phase but im not 100% sure about that anymore. Mounting and Aggro theme can be playing over each other. Only the Hunter being Targeted by Safi when its angry will hear the Aggro Theme, which imo is perfect. There is a part of the Fight where the music completely cuts out when Safi slowly drops its One Hit Kill attack. While on its own it does not add to the music. During the Battle it has a big impact.

Everything about both Safi and Xeno is all about that idea of life dawning anew, but at the same time, raw unyielding and disturbing power, even Safi´s title, the red dragon, red, contrary to black dragons like fatalis, black representing death, and terror and destruction, Red is a colour that represents life, and sometimes health, which lines up perfectly with the theme of saif and xeno being that they are literally a formation of the combined life from the energy of elder dragons, but on top of representing life, they are alien in nature, unlike anything else and are capable of bringing mass destruction if they so choose. even xeno jiivas theme is called ¨life springs anew¨ their species is a representation of both new life, and destruction and that is portrayed perfectly in both of their themes, xeno more so leaning on the idea of life and safi adding that disturbing factor of ¨what is it becoming¨ absolutely magnificent, great job capcom.
