The etymology behind electrocution is great. The word was made up fairly recently in the US specifically in the context of the electric chair being introduced, it wasn't used for any other electricity related deaths at first. When the first guy was executed by electric chair, tabloid magazines needed a snappy word for it and they had a few very culturally specific candidates. They were considering "westinghousing" after the Westinghouse equipment being used for the chair, "Gerrycide" after politician Elbridge Thomas Gerry who suggested adopting the electric chair, and "getting browned" after the electrical engineer Harold P. Brown. Like imagine if we now referred to electrocution as "that guy got browned". Apparently Thomas Edison wanted to call it electromort, which would have been cooler imo.

Being a chemistry student in the EU (Austria) with my master's focusing heavily on food chemistry, I went down the rabbit hole of the ammonia ban in the EU. What I found was a German news article, from the year 2012 called: "Pink Slime": Was sich alles Fleisch nennen darf (translation: Pink Slime: What's allowed to be called meat) in Die Presse. From what I understand, the ammonia gas itself isn't the problem, yes ammonia is toxic, but I can't imagine enough of it actually remains in the meat to make a difference. It would be different, if the meat actually got in contact with the ammonia solution, but it normally doesn't.* So what's the real issue? The term pink slime (seemingly) is only used for beef based slimes. During its production, chunks of meat on bones are simply mechanical pressed to a pulp in various ways. At the time of the ban, Europe had a big problem with a disease called BSE or commonly known as "mad cows disease", which infects the nervous system of cows and can be transmitted to humans through the consumption of nerve tissue. BSE is a really deadly disease as it basically destroys the brain, it also is really hard to treat as it is believed that it is caused not by bacteria or a virus, but a misfolded protein, which simply can't be targeted easily through conventional methods. So the bigger concern with pink slime was that because of the low quality of the meat that is processed to pink slime, there is a higher risk of crushing up a lot of infected nerve tissue. After the BSE crisis was under control regulations loosened and the production of pink slime was allowed again. But still ammonia treated pink slime seems to be banned in the EU. From my understanding the reason for the ban is that ammonia treatment is just a very crude way of killing germs on the meat to ensure food safety, but given Europe's history with BSE stricter hygiene regulations on beef have been established to ensure that meat isn't infected with any potential diseases. So the treatment with ammonia simply isn't enough to uphold these standards and instead alternative ways of production have been established to ensure food safety along the whole production process and not just in the final product. So yeah, it's not that ammonia is toxic, but rather that ammonia treatment endorses poor hygiene in the production process of pink slime.** Additionally, the article stated that there were no such regulations on other "meat based slimes". So potentially chicken, pork and other non-beef slimes may still be treated with ammonia. Given the age of the article and the overall minimal information it provided on that topic, this might as well not be the case at all. (Keep in mind that this information is only based on ONE biased news article (biased against the use of pink slime in food) and my interpretation of what it was saying. I tried to keep a neutral stance and use my current knowledge to the best of my abilities. I may have misinterpreted some of the information, especially in my conclusion on why ammonia treated pink slime is banned in the EU. Also, I wasn't looking deep enough to find current production protocols of pink slime in the EU, so if that's something you're interested in, you have to go look for it on your own. ) Edits: *) So apparently, ammonia dissolves decently well in the slime, because of its high moisture and depending on the concentration of ammonia in the gas, it can even lead to off-odors and flavors. In those cases some adverse effects may be noticeable. **) The big issue of off-odors and flavors has led to decreasing the concentration of ammonia for meat treatment, which then again decreases its anti-microbial effect. This might also play a role for its ban in the EU, but that's just me saying that.

The thing about the word pathetic is that it didnt always mean such a negative thing, at least not in terms of being an insult to be called pathetic. It's derived from the word 'pathos', which is a quality that creates a feeling of pity or sympathy in a person. Like that 3rd-act-sad-moment in every movie, it's meant to make you feel sorry for the characters, and so it invokes pathos in the viewer. So Pathetic originally just meant 'makes you feel sorry for them'.

I’m pescatarian so I don’t really have a stake in the hotdog thing beyond appreciating as much of the animal as possible getting use, but tbh I agree with Arin that a lot of these sorts of things sound a lot worse and scarier and grosser than they actually are, especially if you put them in perspective of what all sorts of food, even straight up natural fruit, contains. Like if you’ve ever seen those memes pointing out how antivaxxers make things sound scary by just listing big fancy chemical words with just like…. listing the natural chemicals in an apple or our own breast milk. The dose makes the poison, after all. And literally everything you could consume has good and bad to it. No food is wholly good and healthy or wholly bad an unhealthy. They can lean more one way than the other but they won’t be all the way. So while health is important, you can really only care so much since perfectly healthy doesn’t exist. Like how so many things are carcinogens (main reason you see the warning so much is that California has such a low threshold for how much something has to impact cancer risk to warrant the warning and products generally just put the label on all products). Most of them barely have any impact and, especially if you go by those California rules, it would just be so insanely impractical to avoid EVERYTHING that technically qualifies as a carcinogen (I mean…. the literal sun, for one). And plus, literally everything ever is gonna somehow impact your risks of something or other and there’s only so much you can really worry about it and only so much concern it’s even really worth. Obviously there is such a thing as too much risk and we do need knowledge and regulations, but perspective goes a long way.
