There's pros and cons to both. Subs have the original script and pacing, but splits your attention. Dubs are so much easier to watch and pay full attention to, but can also be cringey and inaccurate. Ultimately, I appreciate both. It's fun to compare and contrast. Sometimes a dub does something better than a sub, and vice versa :)

Cringey and inaccurate are just not things anymore. The whole point of what Arin was talking about is how professional dubs are handled now. By fans, for fans, in a sense. People look at 4Kids and think every dub is like that.

Some people on Reddit have stated some subs have terrible voice acting but they get completely ignored by everyone because weebs are pricks.

6:12 That was me showing Spirited Away to my family, they were too caught up on the whats and whys rather than just enjoying it.

My parents showed me and my sister that movie. And since we were kids we just liked the animation, and that it was a cartoon.

I think Asura's Wrath got the dubbing figured out. The gods in that game are supposed to be mighty and larger than life, so like any sense of over-acting feels at home because of course they're gonna be shout to the top of their lungs.

Imo what Arin said in general may be correct about early anime and sub/dub. But like Cowboy Bebop and a few others had masterful dubs. Also more modern anime like Attack on Titan has done REALLY well. People also consider the dub and sub to FMAB about even in quality. Like.. If people think all anime are automatically better in sub, I feel like that's a very old school way of viewing anime dubs

I watch it subbed with French subtitles. Never let them know your next move.

Code Geass is one of the best dubs ever partially because it doesn't do japanese honorifics, even in the sub, so the speech patters are much easier to fit to English, plus the cast is fucking amazing! I'mma go rewatch all of it..again!

It really depends on the show and the people doing the dub. Some anime are heavily influenced by western culture and the dub works just fine. Cowboy bebop, The big O, im sure there are other examples but these shows feel just right with english dubbing.

I’m the early days of toonami, Funimation was really doing the best job at the time. Cowboy Bebop was the first anime that I remember being really good

my personal favourite anime that has both a sub and dub which are both unironically great, which is called "Bobobo-bo bobo" the sub is good, cause it has some very golden moments that get lost in its translation AND the main character has the same voice as Dio brando the dub however on the other hand is some crazy shit that actually enhances the material AND the main character is voiced by the same guy whose does I think the voice Johnthan Jostar in the dub of jojo? Im not sure but I know he does one of the jojo voices and both are absolutely bonkers and I totally recommend it to anyone

I will always prefer subs for anything thats foreign, but sometimes if I cant 100% focus on the show I put on the subs for a few minutes. I recently watched Dark on netflix ( a german time travel show, probably one of the best 3 seasons I have ever watched on TV), the german actors were amazing so I always left the subs but sometimes when I needed to do some chores or answer phone messeges I would put on the dubs (even though they were awful lol)

I tend to watch dubs first since I have minor dyslexia, so it's always hard to keep up without pausing or going back, which tends to break my immersion. That being said, I tend to watch subs after. They both have their merits in terms of how they sound. That is, unless the dub isn't good, but it usually works for me since the anime I watch tends to have good dubs.

I know what Arin means about the yelling. It makes me think about the dub of Gurren Lagann. I don’t think the actor who plays Kamina in english does a very good job, whenever he yells he just comes off as kind of phony? Not for a lack of trying, it’s just one of those things that works best in the original language. On the other hand, I love the dub of Baccano! Everyone is doing cheesy new york accents, but I think that fits the tone of that show.

subs, unless the dub is better than even the Japanese (very very rare, but it has happened)

It's not that anime is like that, it's the Japanese language. For example "omae" is literally the pronoun for "motherf***er", and it's commonly translated to "you bastard" or "damn you" or "I'm going to kill you". And in anime it commonly said right before someone punches someone else in the face. So the line is "OMAEEEEEEE" (punch) Translated to English it usually becomes "YOU BASTAAAARD" (punch) or "DAAAAAMN YOUUUU" (punch) etc. So Arin's example of "I'M GONNA RIP YOUR HEAD OFF" was probably the line "OMAEEEEEE" translated.
@MiharuTheFox
@MiharuTheFox Жыл бұрын
"Omae" does not translate to "motherfucker". It's simply a rough, assertive way of saying "you", though it can be seen as derogatory depending on the context. You're probably thinking of "kisama" or "onore".

for me, it's a case-by case basis. i thoroughly enjoy the original subs for jojo, but knowing how a lot of names get changed makes it hard to like the dubs. pokemon on the other hand, i grew up on the 4kids nonsense and it's always gonna have a special place in my heart, and trying to watch that in japanese makes it difficult because i'm just not used to the original "real" names of all the characters there. then there's shows like soul eater, where the dub and subs are equally entertaining due to the voice actors' performances in each being a delight to listen to. like i said, it's a case-by-case thing.

I think some shows sound better In Japanese and some in English, it really depends on a lot of variables
@AppleJackSix
@AppleJackSix Жыл бұрын
Nowadays it really depends on the show. At the start of a series I’ll watch the first 5 minutes in English, then rewind and rewatch it in Japanese to see which is better. Sometimes performances just don’t work as well in other languages. I’m trying to think of the most extreme examples. Like Gutren Lagan, that show straight only works in Japanese, it loses part of its soul in English. But Steins Gate is waaay better in English than Japanese. Most shows I think are personal preference but some shows have clear winners.

If the dub is good ill prefer the dub, but if its ass ill watch subs all day. It also depends on if the japanese voice makes the male actors sound too childish (think dbz).

I think we romanticize it because it's a language we don't understand 100% even if you learn the language Maybe I'm wrong but even Japanese people don't talk like anime Don't they say don't try to learn Japanese from anime for that reason so it's cringe for them too 100% into different form of media and expression so you can't 100% translated in any language because of the differences between the languages but that's why you need to adapt and sacrifice some authenticity for it to sound correct in your language but you can't always do that So you're stuck between those two things
@Tsugimoto1

I think what they're talking about, with dubs, can be blamed on poor direction, over-the-top voiceovers, and uncreative translation. First, when you're translating the scripts, take the time to adapt the language to make sense with the pacing. Less literal, and redundant lines. Then I think the rest can sort of fall into place with good direction and acting. With the right people on board, I think you can de-cringify the cringiest of animes. Dubbed or no.

dub is just like any generic american cartoons. if you like that, i dont judge, but it could be better with a japanese accent from the original voice.

I’ve never had a problem keeping up with subtitled anime so those are my defaults usually. But there are some stellar dubs out there. Not My Hero’s though. My Hero’s dub is the type of thing I would show to a casual viewer if I wanted them to avoid anime forever… Which I feel really bad for saying because the voice actors in it are all really good in other shows. But dang can I not stand the MHA dub.

I really can't watch sub anymore. For me, they all sound the same. They have no personality in their voices in the original. The best example for me is hisoka from hunterXhunter. In the original, he has a generic voice, I could exchange his voice with kurapika's and it wouldn't chance anything, but in the dub his voice is perfect, he has a flamboyant voice, but still maintains his dark undertones.

Nah you lying😂. It's cool if you like dub over sub but you're goofing if you actually think Hisoka's sub voice sounds anything remotely close to Kurapika's. Maybe you just chose a bad example
