True. Expensive fragrances are sometimes expensive because they are made out of rare materials and not because they are necessarily the best.

I cannot agree enough with the whole body chemistry thing. I mostly stick to the same bottle, only ever changing when it becomes out of stock. With my usual scent, I often get asked what I'm wearing. Then I get people complaining to me that the bottle they purchased, they didn't like, despite it being the same thing. It kinda sucks because the bottle (converted to USD) costs about $100.

I’m a signature-scent kind of person, rotating between the same 2 or 3 perfumes for close to a decade now (coco Chanel, Dior’s Diorissimo or a similar jasmine fragrance and Tom Ford in the square bottle if they have a new release in my taste). But fragrance in relation to video games, I enjoy candles inspired by game characters and locales. Something cool about imagining what these people, creatures and places smell like 😊

Really enjoyed this fragrance discussion, Tim! As someone into both gaming and fragrances, I noticed an interesting parallel - you talked about different fragrance brands, but have you explored specific perfumers' work? Just like how we follow game developers across different publishers, some perfumers have distinctive styles that show up across different houses. Speaking of industry insights, there's a fascinating book called "The Ghost Perfumer" by Gabe Oppenheimer that reveals the behind-the-scenes world of perfumery. It's about perfumers who, similar to some game developers, created iconic works but didn't get recognition for years - would be right up your alley given your industry experience! Since you mentioned enjoying mossy scents, I'd recommend checking out Rogue Perfumery's Mousse Illuminee. And if you're into green fragrances, both Zoologist King Cobra and Comme des Garcons Serpentine capture amazing verdant atmospheres.

Man, Coty made a CHEAP fragrance in the 90s called Avatar. Loved it, used it through high school. Was looking for it later on in my 30s, and the prices skyrocketed, because it had a similar profile to a very expensive and popular fragrance. Found a bottle for $60 on ebay (risky purchase I know) and ugh instant nostalgia. Used 98% of the bottle, and kept the last bit just to get a whiff every now and then. Even went through a couple of fragrance revival/replication businesses to try and get it at a somewhat more reasonable price. They get close, but its just not quite there. I should get into discovery sets. Was using scentbox for a couple years, but I think I need more randomness to truly explore the fragrance world. Great advice. Thanks for the videos brother

My favourite thing I know about aftershave is that Old Spice was intended to be a women's fragrence. I'm not sure how much it's cultural, but that is one of the most masculine smells I can think of.

Do you have any suggestions for fragrances in open office floorplans where desks are packed together? I always end up using scentless aftershave / deodorant because I worry it would be distracting to people sitting next to me since I don't have a closed office room. Even with a low projection, the proximity between the desks is rather close.
@CainOnGames
@CainOnGames Ай бұрын
I like scents from the 4711 line, as most of them are both lightly scented and low projection. If you want to explore other brands, look for reviews that call the fragrance a “skin scent”, which means it stays very close to the skin and barely projects at all.

Thank you for this, it's a lot of helpful information. I was recently helping my niece pick out some fragrances, and came across one that I really liked - but I ended up not liking it after a half hour or so. this world of fragrances that Tim lives in, is a world I never lived in although I like the bazooka joe reference lol (terrible comics with the gum) something as a kid I thought was really cool, but was rare, was some magazines, or stickers (I think) or rare various products had scratch and sniff elements to them it definitely felt like a special feature when something included them also, as a kid in the 90s, some marker sets smelled amazing lol I really think there was a set of markers that were supposed to smell like things, I think mainly fruit (and like I think I remember a picture of an orange on one of the markers for example)

You can use the word Fougere to describe grassy, mossy, ferny fragrances. Like Green Irish Tweed. Some other notes I appreciate in fragrances are vetiver (Haitian Vetiver, this is very refined and distinguished...think The Most Interesting Man in the World) and tobacco (odd because I LOATHE cigarettes but the earthy smell of non-smoked cigars makes me think of an old study or den...kind of liminal in some way).

I commented earlier but I’m so fascinated by the size of your collection, I can’t stop thinking about it lol I wanted to ask 1) if you ever find yourself running low on a specific fragrance, do you save it for collection purposes, run and get a replacement or let it run out and move on? 2) can you recognize a scent without looking at the label, kinda how you can with chocolate? 3) how do you organize your fragrance cabinet? By brand? By notes? By bottle shape?

There's a chain of shops in the UK called Lush and they sell eco friendly bath bombs, bubble baths and perfumes amongst other smell related products. My wife loves their stuff, and on its own any one product smells good. But going into one of their shops, especially the less ventilated ones, is an almost instant smell related migraine. When I was younger strong perfumes and aftershaves would give me a niggly pain but man that shop is like someone sticking a nuke directly in my brain.

Two thoughts from this. One, any chance you switched teams for a fling in Russia in the early 2000s? You and I have JUST had the SAME conversation I had with my older, gay son we adopted from Russia back in 2004. We were in Alta in the mall two days ago, and he went over the whole body chemistry test on yourself thing. Two, my wife wife is sensitive to most scents. She was okay with the CK Obession I wore in college. In Grad school, I got some Grey Flannel. I really liked it, both the scent and the joke about how it sounds professory. You can see where this is going. She had an allergic reaction to it and absolutely hates it. I sent this to my son and told him we need to watch it with Mom so he can see her reaction to you saying the words Grey Flannel. I also told him I think we found his bio dad. 😀
