A book note, and spoilers for anyone who may want to read it. Tywin did NOT order the mountain to rape and kill Elia and the kids. He had a great scene with Tyrion where Tyrion calls him out on it and Tywin basically looks down at Tyrion and says (paraphrasing) “not even you would think I would give that kind of order. Truth be told I didn’t know what Gregor Clegane was capable of until they came to me with what he did in the red keep. And what could I do, I couldn’t bring them back to life so I made the best of it and laid the bodies out for Robert to show that his kingdom was now secure” Tywin, always the pragmatic.

Herbert Schulz storm of swords; Tyrion Chapter 54. I just went over it again and I was slightly wrong. Tywin told his men to take care of the kids hoping they would kill them peacefully but of course they didn’t. He then tells Tyrion he didn’t tell them to touch Elia but because the mountain is a monster he raped and killed her for the fun of it. That’s when Tywin says he didn’t know what kind of madman the mountain was until that happened and says surely you don’t think I would have ordered that. Tywin after the fact questions his me like wtf happened here and one of his guys said they stabbed the little girl to death because she “kicked” him. And Tyrion’s internal monologue says Tywin looked disgusted reliving it.

You know what I really love in this episode? The scene with the farmer really does show how much the North actually cares about house Stark, even a farmer who's pushing as hard as he can to get by, thinks about the safety and well being of the high-born that rule over him. The southern kingdoms' low-born might not care who sits where, who rules what; but in the North, the Starks cared for and loved their people, and that inspired a kind of compassion and loyalty of those people that no other house has.

Don't know about whether Tywin said it, but it would have been a mistake to let her live. Ellia would have been a thorn to the side of Robert's rule. With her kids and husband dead, what would she have done with her life appart from finding every way to make their killers pay?

I 100% approve (rounding up) of the non-consentual scene. Progress isn‘t this linear improvement, people backpeddle time and time again. Jaime‘s flaws are deeply embedded, and if it only gets better, then that just makes it seem easy. There‘s a reason addicts relapse, they‘ve still got inner demons and the struggle can be overwhelming. Turning into a healthy individual isn‘t a walk in the park. It‘s a reminder of what Jaime is and it gives him depth. Realism isn‘t always needed, but in this case it only adds to his character. I‘m not going to comment on the difference of outrage for different similar scenes.
@TheAwesomoe6 жыл бұрын
I also, respectfully, disagree with you. I don't know if I will catch up on the books ever, but at the moment I'm still only halfway through book two. So my perspective comes from the show primarily, and I think it fits quite well. I know it's heresy to suggest that deviation from the original story can be positive, not just a necessary evil, but I stand by it. The books shows a quite grim portrayal of women's status in the world, so there chivalry is an exception, but the show never really tackles the topic to the same extent. Obviously it does, you can insert a lot of examples of it, but I get the sense that these values brilliantly seep into every conversation regarding the topic in the books. The show makes it seem like some rotten eggs, where the books paints a picture of this unreachable issue that is impossible to combat. More than just reminding us of the imbalance of the sexes in this world, it makes sense from a story-telling perspective. It didn't have a direct consequence, but I think that's a positive. Just like the real world, things go unpunished and justice isn't fair or relatively distributed. Ramsay doesn't get a 1:1 punishment for all the people he flayed and tortured, his death was rather quick in comparison. A lot of it is just compounding factors to shape our opinions of the characters, my point is that not everything has to serve this grand objective purpose in a story. This goes contrary to what the youtube film analysts will tell you, that action and consequence is the end-all and be-all, but a lot more factors go into it (think theme, emotion or struggle). Some people might argue that this story is known for having consequences for actions, but I think that's a bit reductionistic. So I think it was a fair introduction to his character, because I honestly felt that purely bad actions were lacking on his part. George's main tool for making us dislike him was his attitude, which would mean that a change of our opinions would come really easily. What other thing did he do that was just cruel and evil? During the war he did a lot of things to survive, and after that his arc had already come a long way. The best example I can think of is Tyrion's first love, which shows what kind of upbringing he had. Obviously this wasn't shown in the show, merely hinted at, but it showed what kind of hurdles he had to overcome. If a show portrays me a person wanting to overcome something (shown in his ideals of the knight in comparison to his family), show me what accepting the bad alternative leads to. You could argue that you have that in other characters, but I prefer the model where they're all messed up in some way. My ideal version would be them showing him regretting what he did to Cersei, but I think it's fine as it is. I'm mainly coming at it from the angle that I want more grey characters, realistic ones at that, and it's a good addition to that cause. If you think of character's origin on a spectrum from good to bad, and then what they end up doing when things get hard on a similar scale from good to bad, there aren't that many characters who were born in the bad camp who want to be good. Tyrion is similar in that regard, but he alienated himself from his family, so you can sometimes forget what an awful upbringing he had. It's a bit simplistic, but it serves to prove a point.
