I never thought I’d cheer at the horrific death of a child until this episode came out. Joffrey is such a fantastic character that you end up cheering when he dies horribly and then you actually miss hating him after he’s gone. Props to Jack Gleeson for playing him so well!

Fun fact: this episode is the last time George Martin (writer of the books the show is based on) was directly involved with the show. Other than giving the showrunners direct instructions on building up a certain direwolf pack to a fight at a later point in the story, he dropped out. He has yet to finish the books 😭

Actors are commonly praised when they give a great performance as a protagonist, but great performances of antagonists result only in the audience hating the character. It’s important to remember that that was an actor, and in this case, Jack Gleeson did an absolutely phenomenal job portraying Joffrey, and he deserves a lot of credit for how hated his character was. 👏

Starting in book 3(?), we start getting Theon's perspective. Going through his transition to Reek from within his mind is BRUTAL. The show doesn't do it justice, but I think it's better that way. The physical torture churns my stomach- he describes how Ramsey would flay his fingers one at a time until Theon would beg him to cut them off. He even tried to naw his own finger off at one point the pain was so excruciating. The mental part is almost harder to read. Theon is broken and his mind has completely snapped from reality. He is Reek. A lot of characters in the books (and show) go through a lot of misery, pain, and heartbreak but from my perspective as a reader, Theon suffers the worst fate of any of them by far.

In the books this wedding is later referred to by other characters as the Purple Wedding due to the purple colors representing the color of royalty and Joffrey's purple face after being poisoned.

Imo the character Joffrey is one of GRRM's greatest creations and hats off to Jack Gleeson man. What an actor, what an actor. He turned this role into one of the most memorable villains in the history of tv shows. Wish he hadn't quit acting tho, sucks that the role took a mental toll on him. He's like the sweetest guy in real life too lol and is a scholar of philosophy and theology.

There is a short story called "The Most Dangerous Game," where a hunter is bored with killing animals and wants the challenge of hunting people (not for food, just for a challenge). This has had several movie versions and is often used as one-off episodes for television series, where the characters end up meeting such a hunter and spend the episode trying to escape. This is basically Ramsay, plus extra Bolton sadism.

She says it almost like she's affronted at being cast aside so callously for Margaery. Which is weird since the groom in question is Joffrey, but understandable as it is a matter of pride. It brings up the age old question of who would be the more prized bride, the more fitting queen between these two ladies from two old noble houses with two very different personalities. This is the quote that comes to my mind when I think of that. "Haunted vulnerability" is a great GRRM description of Sansa compared to the more self-assured and flashy beauty of Margaery. Sophie had the perfect eyes to pull off that expression.

Fun fact: The Rains of Castamere that played during the titles was sang by the actor who played Joffrey - Jack Gleeson. Too bad they didn't incorporate his singing in some way in the show, he has quite a lovely voice.

About Ramsay and the girls in the books.. it's even worse If a girl make a good hunt (he and he's dogs hunting the girl) he kills her immediately and name one dog after the girl If a girl doesn't make a good "fun" hunt, he rapes the girl and flay her while she's still alive Ramsay is prob one of the worst people ever made in fantasy

I watched S1 after my mum, who quite liked Sean Bean, watched it first and recommended it to me... I then caught up with all the books that were available, 'cos I fecking loved it... Reading The Red Wedding, I was totally gutted - as are most of YT's reactions - and then reading the Purple Wedding I simply couldn't fathom out where this story was going to go. :o I did like the TV show...
