During my time in the Netherlands, I had to deal with a landlord who didn't speak a slick of English. Every time I met with him, his son would be present to translate what I said to his father. He understood me well enough that I didn't have to talk slowly or repeat myself much but he could hardly form a complete sentence in English. A lot of ppl in NL at least understand english when spoken to, that's already remarkable compared to the rest of Europe.

Yea I think you're right, in the show her accent isn't Dutch nor is it like the other members of the cast who are mostly native English speakers, it has a very exotic sound to it and that really contributes to the role she plays.

true, the reason for this is that we don't use audio dub on english/american spoken movies or series. Instead we put the dutch subtitles under it, so we hear the english and see the translation. That way we create a subconscious understanding of hearing english words and the translation. Most other european countries have Audio dub so they simple don't hear any english.

As a non-Dutch, living in Holland I have to agree with you. I've been trying to train myself in speaking in some sort of British-like accent, but hearing people around me speak with a Dutch or any other accent, doesn't help at all. At the end of the day your own natural born accent tends to always surface back up when you're not alert and haunts you.

Ahh that is very interesting! I didn't know English is actually originally also from the same Germanic language family. But since it was heavily influenced by French, that's why today is sounds the way it sounds. So in the end, still, the English sounding is a mix between French and Germanic. I've always considered Frisian as 'that' dialect of Dutch that wants to declare itself a separate language. And it's closest to English than any other Germanic language. Thank you for this information.

No she was just being Dutch. We are pretty down to earth and have a saying that goes: "doe maar normaal dan doe je al gek genoeg", which translates to : "just act normal and you'll act crazy enough"
@AssortedBits11 жыл бұрын
Actually, English and Dutch are of the same language family (West-Germanic, together with German, Frisian, Yiddish, Low-German and Afrikaans), but English has been the most diluted due to that invasion and subsequent occupation by French vikings. Frisian and English are especially close, for example: in German and Dutch the ch/tsj-sound transitioned into a k, but it didn't happen in English and Frisian. Hence church in English, tsjerk in Frisian, Kirche in German and kerk in Dutch.
@KarrieDreammind511 жыл бұрын
It is remarkable indeed. I think it's also got to do with the languages being not entirely different from each other. They are not from the same language family, like Dutch and - for example - German, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are... but English is a mixed language originating from different language families. And many modern languages nowadays are heavily influenced by English as well. Dutch is one of them. It's another theory.
@asArsenic11 жыл бұрын
At the risk of sounding arrogant it's a Dutch thing. We have a saying "Doe nou effe normaal" which roughly translates to "Just be normal". We have this mindset of "Sure, I may be world famous but I'm still just a normal person who does normal person things". It's not humility, we can be mighty proud of ourselves, but it's a sort of level-headedness when it comes to social standing. In the dutch mindset being famous doesn't make you any more special than anyone else. At least most of the time.

funny (scary?) how dutch people are blaming her accent. i'm italian and i sure can hear she's got a different accent from GOT, like she's not even trying or she doesn't care, but still this is a fairly good one compared to other european accents, which tend to be much thicker than hers. i mean, if she was italian, she would be considered an excellent english speaker with a very nice pronounciation. but i guess everybody in Netherlands grew up learning english so you all guys can speak better than her, and you can definitely spot a bad Dutch accent, which is impressive to me :)

Yep, that's for sure. They actually asked her to keep her dutch accent to make it fit with the exotic root of the character, but she decided to mix it up with american, irish, british. That's why she definitely sounds different in the interviews.

Mine is good because I moved to the Netherlands and also attended an International high school. :) I can't really pinpoint the difference in our countries and why young people seem to be less willing to speak English here in Bulgaria (still think it has to do with the fact that tourism only started to blossom in the last decade or so). But then again, I've met enough young Dutch people who hardly speak any English either. So we're even. :P

Ok ok, so foreigners have nothing to do with it. Perhaps. I'm just saying in my country I grew up with Cartoon Network as well (though sometimes it was in French for some reason) and we also learned English in primary school (from 6 years old onwards). Me and my cousin actually had English classes in the kindergarten as well because our parents wanted it for us. And then in the 90s and early 2000s there was the Internet. Yet, when I came to NL more people spoke English than I was used to.

To older generations English wasn't that important, hence they didn't get it at school (I think German and French were the foreign languages they learnt). But everyone who has been educated in the 80's 'til now got at least some English in school. Dutch and English are required languages in the curriculum of secondary education, other languages are optional (German and French being the most common ones.)

No, not necessarily. People whom start learning English at a later age will be stuck with a Dutch accent, those whom choose to learn it before they reach the age of 10~ can learn it without having an obvious accent or in rare cases no accent whatsoever. So, no, accents do not necessarily always linger but rather they do most of the time.

You're crazy. Foreigners...lmao. Forget Cartoon Network, before that was even here, like in the late 80's, 90's there were shows like G.I. Joe, Transformers, Ninja Turtles all with subtitles. Had they been dubbed I doubt I would have gotten a grasp on the English language to the extent that I have. We also learn it in elementary school, but tv-shows were where the real learning was at.

Ahhh, near all Dutch people have an accent like this. I think it's less annoying than most other European-English accents ;-) And of course, in the series she's had lots of practice on how to pronounce her lines, but when you're in an interview, you can't practice what you're gonna say ;-) I think - in general - Dutch people are good enough at speaking English (probably because all English spoken movies and tv series are subtitled here), but well; a bit of a Dutch accent does always remain.
