Sheesh, even the Puzzle Bobble games didn't go this far when you failed... I say this is a bit of an overstretch.

What's with the flickering sprite?

Two possible reasons: 1. Emulation error 2. Many older games created the illusion of semi-transparency by flickering a sprite on and off every frame. If a recording is out of sync (or if played at a lower frame rate) it can cause flickering and other problems due to the frames being captured being out of phase with the effect.
