On June 5, the Crew Flight Test (CFT) mission of Boeing's CST-100 Starliner spacecraft completed its first stage by successfully sending two astronauts to the ISS. However, the return process did not go as smoothly.
In a statement on June 18, NASA said that the event of bringing astronauts back to Earth would occur after the second of the two planned spacewalks at the space station, which was scheduled for July 2.
That spacewalk has since been postponed to late July after a water leak from a suit umbilical line in the airlock just as a June 24 spacewalk was beginning, that spacewalk was scrubbed.
This has led to the Starliner's test flight schedule being extended by at least a month and a half, and possibly longer.

On the afternoon of June 28, at a press conference, NASA explained that the additional delay is to conduct ground tests on the Starliner's RCS thrusters to try to replicate the conditions that caused the thrusters to malfunction during the approach to the station. These tests, expected to start this week, will last at least a few weeks.
Steve Stich, NASA commercial crew program manager, noted that these ground tests would also allow for a detailed examination of the thrusters to determine the possible causes of the issue, something that cannot be done with the thrusters in space on the Starliner. These thrusters are located in the spacecraft's service module, which is discarded and burns up in the atmosphere, making post-flight study impossible.

The leaks in the suits are because they are using 10 year old suits from the Space Shuttle and they only have some spares that are either too small or too big to do a space walk. And the helium leaks in the service module can only be repaired with a space walk. They are screwed.

How long till all the helium is leaked out? 😂 They are just waiting for spaceX to announce the rescue mission. No way after this they put people back Starliner and hope everything goes well. When going trough the atmosphere you need a lot of RCS firing so they get hot and looks they fail under heat. So they are stranded in space and just waiting before SpaceX comes to the rescue. And this will be a big blown for Boeing again.

Not at all. As long as it is docked, nothing is leaking. And EVERYTHING which causes issues (thrusters and heliumleak) is on the servicemodule, not on the Starliner capsule. So as soon as reentry starts, everything is fine anyway because that faulty service module is gone by then.

But they holding Starliner for testing and making sure it will be ALL safe. If there were no leaks anymore because the valves are closed and there is enough helium. @@LennardA320 Helium will be used up and is leaking slowly when the open the valves for the return. But it is more than enough there, since helium leaks are very common in space flight. They can come home anytime. But then they do not excactly know what happend and why cause the service module with it´s issues is gone. The idea is to check the issues as long as the module ist still available and can transfer data. There is not "so many problems" there is actually just one: automated thruster shut down. And why not testing live in space when they have the opportunity to do so.

Yes there is many times more helium than needed, that is redundancy. And yes use some of the time to learn what the problems are because you can test it now in space however not on Earth. But my concerns are regarding now delay on delay on delay. There are problems that is why starliner is still docked. If everything is fine they can say a date and return but sadly they don't know if starliner is up to the task. Probably 90% yes but after glitches in systems name it. This causes concerns and delays and every time scrubbing a return gives no confidence that everything is good. So I am not sure about how safe this all is. It is a test flight but how much risk is BOEING want to take. Losing another over 6 Billion dollar craft with astronauts? Even if it returns.

If the earlier 45 day time limit was arbitrary, then why pick that number. What analysis was done to pick that number and why is that analysis NOW not valid? Why is it taking so long to "test" the service module and why couldn't they have tested it on the ground prior to launch? This raises a QA issue. And why can't they now test the service module on the ground with the one being built?! Something is not right and Boeing/NASA isn't telling us the entire truth.

If NASA can simply extend the 45 day cerrtified maximum battery duration for Starliner in order to allow for extra tests to take place, this means that a) they are using up the built-in safety margins which will increase the risk for the astronauts on their return flight, or 2) the certification of a 45 day maximum battery duration was not based on any hard data. Either way it looks at though NASA should call in SpaceX to solve this major problem before they decide whether to continue with the Starliner project.

I understand there are going to be teething problems with new space craft but Starliner should be cancelled. If SpaceX can get their spa craft operational in half the time at half the cost with zero issues then Boeing has failed in a massive and very expensive way and any further business with government should be with great scepticism. Boeing is a huge waste of money.

I agree with your sentiment, but one important reason for having an additional spacecraft is that Starliner can use it's thrusters to correct or adjust the ISS position and trajectory through space. Now and then it needs to be lifted or angled differently due to incoming space debris. SpaceX Crew Dragon can't do that. The only other craft that can do this is Soyus.

If its safe to return. Then return. You don't get any credibility hanging around the space station for "no reason"... because What can they do in the next 10 days that they haven't done already? Are they going to do a space walk to inspect the dead thruster? I don't think so when the suits keep malfunctioning (this is the second or third water leak). Just take pictures and go home. That shouldn't take weeks. No one believes you are going to spacewalk, dismantle thruster assembly, reassemble it and fly home... so What are you doing? It REALLY seems like NASA is lying about the capsule being safe or you would just land it, take the data and FIX the clearly flawed thruster design. We had good thrusters 60 years ago but Now its beyond Boeing's ability... well, THAT seems much more credible as they are run by shaved chimps that killed 350 people a few years ago and blew out a door recently and rubbish left in new airliner crawl spaces and this on the heels of the Disasterous 787 that couldn't make a profit for 10 years because some Dimwit high up decided to make fuselages in Italy and then build unique airliner just to transport them to South Carolina.
