The title of Biohazard 7: Resident Evil made a lot of sense in Japan because it's the first game since the original to take place in... well... _an evil residence._ So they probably just saw an opportunity to finally use the international version's title over in Japan. They also probably didn't intend for the title and subtitle to be swapped overseas, but I'm betting the localizers just looked at that and thought "hey wouldn't it be funny if..."

Favorite clever-ish game title is still Kirby Triple Deluxe. It was the first Kirby on 3DS and the 10th mainline Kirby platformer, so they abbreviated it as 3DX, or Triple Deluxe. Also 3D, DDD, Dedede, and thus Dedede plays a large role in the story. It's cute!

One interesting example: The "To the Moon" series. It's a game series that doesn't have an over-arching title, each game has it's own unrelated title. The original game was "To the Moon" Then there was the spinoff "A bird Story" Then "Finding Paradise" Then "Imposter Factory" Each game has it's own completely seperate title, no overarching title for the series as a whole.

New super Mario bros on the DS is over 16 years old(it came out in may 2006)a good portion of the human population are younger than the game with “new”. The worst part is that no matter how old the game is, it’ll always be new, even when it can legally drink. The reason theres a "Super mario 3D land" and a "Super mario 3D world" is a direct reference to Super mario world and Super mario land on the Gameboy and SNES. One being the smaller and portable version, being restricted to simply a piece of land/country, while world representing the entirety of it, the whole big thing. Perfect for a hefty console plugged into a TV. I find these games pretty clever with that knowledge. Although its clear it confuses anyone who doesn't catch the reference, which seems to be everyone.

For the weird over-eplanatory European titles, i can think of a simple explanations for that. Asides from a few series who got a specific localisation in French, German or Spanish, when a game come to Europe, it's usually one single European versions (multi-language if europeans are Lucky, english only if the dev don't have the money/don't think a world exist outside of the US) . And that single European version uses the same title, in english everywhere. so while some english words are more or less understandable by anyone, either because they're widely borrowed word like "star" or "cool" or because they refer to something that has the same (or very similar), english name everywhere, other are not as self-explanatory to a non-english speaker as they are to a english. Exemple: "Mario Strikers". Out of context, a non english speaker won't imediately get that it's about football, because the player who shoot at the goal is only called a striker in english. French, Spanish, Germans, Italians have their own words for that. "Mario Striker charged Football" that's clear. Football is called like that, or something close like futbol, everywhere. Dream Team bros has no excuse, though.

I think my favorite franchise when it comes to title fiascos is punchout . First off we have the arcade game called punchout and then we have the arcade sequel called super punchout. Soon after Nintendo released a boxing game and watch which they rebranded in some places as punchout despite having nothing to do with the arcade games. Then they tried to port the arcade game to NES but due to hardware limitations ended up creating a completely different game with a puzzle focus, new opponents and actual story and named protagonists, featuring multiple rounds and in genral playing very differently from the arcade version but just being called punchout featuring either mike Tyson or mr dream. Then they made a Super Nintendo sequel which played much more like the arcade games than the NES games did and because it was on the Super Nintendo it was called super punchout giving it the same name as the arcade game, despite being a completely original game with 10 original fighters and having 16 fights as opposed to the 5 fights in the arcade version. So it’s not a port of the arcade super punchout nor is it a sequel to the NES punchout because it has nothing to do with it story wise. Then they decided to make it even more confusing when next level games made a punchout game on the Wii and instead of giving it a unique subtitle or anything like that it’s just punchout and it’s like a weird spiritual reboot of the NES game, not a sequel and has nothing to with the arcade game, and it is just different enough structurally and content wise to not be a remake either. Basically Nintendo released 4 completely different games names punchout and 2 completely different games named super punchout and that’s not even getting into the mess that is it’s spin-off arm wrestling in the arcade, which features the same announcer(don James), some punchout characters like bald bull, is made as a conversion kit in addition to a standalone cabinet just like super punchout was to punchout, yet it’s title give no inclination that these games are related.

Ever since I played FF7 Remake I have this theory that they tried to trick us with the "Remake" part of the title. (SPOILERS AHEAD) They made us believe that it's called "Remake" because, well, it's a remake of the original FF7... EXCEPT IT'S NOT. Through the entire game there's some divergences but the end is where it really becomes apparent that this is going to be wildly different from the original. It starts to become hinted that some kind of time travelling is going on... like someone (Sephiroth?) went back in time to REMAKE HISTORY. And of course, the second entry was announced as "FF7 Rebirth", which only corroborates this theory. If it was called "remake" because it's a "game remake", wouldn't the second entry have "remake" in the title as well? It won't, because it's not a remake. I'm sure that when the trilogy is over we'll go back to the first game and realize we all have been had, and "Final Fantasy 7: Remake" is going to be the greatest wordplay in a game title of all time.

That's exactly it. No true "remake" especially in Japan has ever put "Remake" in the title. Resident Evil doesn't do it, Castlevania didn't do it (Super CV4 in Japan is literally just called "Akumajo Dracula", just like the NES game), etc etc.. They always have the exact same title, no additions or deletions. Them actively making "Remake" the subtitle goes against that convention, and there is a reason for that. It's not describing the game as "a remake", it's a traditional subtitle telling you what the game itself is about.

You fight mold enemies in the game and mold is an actual biohazard irl since it produces toxins EDIT: Something else I remembered is that the biohazard subtitle also works in terms of the story. Ethan goes to Louisiana to find Mia and after he does, he is only able to leave if he defeats Eveline, who we find out is a B.O.W. that manifests itself as a little girl. Plus Ethan fights the Bakers who mutate into bioweapons themselves. (SPOILERS FOR RESIDENT EVIL VILLAGE) And of course, as we find out in RE8, Ethan died towards the beginning of RE7 and is himself a mold creature the entire rest of the game. So RE7's subtitle makes sense in both a gameplay sense and story sense

Ace Attorney is a funny example. All the games have their own unique name alongside the main series name, but only in the localized version. In Japan, the games just use the series name followed by a number. No special titles. Guess special names sold well outside of Japan?

Before “Shin Megami Tensei” Atlus released “Megami Tensei” on the original Famicom, which was based on a book series called Digital Devil Story, but everyone just called it Megami Tensei because that was the subtitle of the first book in the series. Megami Tensei means “Reincarnation of the Goddess” roughly, but the point of adding “Shin” is that after the SNES came out in japan, just like how tons of games here added "Super" to their titles, in Japan "Shin" was added alot, but not the kanji used in SMT's title, the different one that means “New” 新 SMT used the other kanji that means "True" 真. So basically, the play on words is a "homophone" Where the word is pronounced the same way as another word, but it has a different meaning based on how it's spelled. It's like if you made a game called "Sword of the Black Night" Saying it outloud, it would sound like you're saying Knight, because the context implies thats the word you're using, but you're not. The context here is releasing on the super famicom when a ton of other "Shin" games were coming out, but instead of meaning the new version of the game, you read it as “The True Reincarnation of the Goddess” 真・女神転生

Another case would be the Story of Seasons (Bokujo Monogatari) series, which used to be localized by Natsume as Harvest Moon, then after the producers of Bokujo Monogatari acquired a localization company of their own, they needed to change the name of their games since Natsume owns the rights for "Harvest Moon", this is why Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town was remastered under Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town a few years ago

15:04 I had to deal with this so much as a kid. I played a lot of LEGO games growing up, and the ads for them implied that all the platforms a game released on were the same version. However, at least for the DS ports, the gameplay was vastly different. So much content would be cut or changed, but my young self did not know that. As a result, I always thought that Star Wars III, Harry Potter Years 1-4, and Indiana Jones (1) were just really bad for the longest time. It wasn’t until I found a cartridge for Lord of the Rings for the DS (a game that I already had for the PS3) that I realized the differences in game versions didn’t stop at graphical upgrades. It just would’ve been so nice if TT advertised or at least titled the significantly altered ports to indicate how they deviated from other versions.

My favorite (or rather, least favorite) example of video game title confusion is definitely Harvest Moon vs Story of Seasons. For those who don’t know the Japanese game series Bokujou Monogatari (which translates to Farm Story) was originally called Harvest Moon in the West, but after Marvelous and XSeed decided to stop working with the localizer Natsume, it was decided that Natsume still had the rights to the name Harvest Moon and is allowed to publish games under that title. The real Bokujo Monogatari games are now called Story of Seasons, but Natsume is making their own farming games using the Harvest Moon names to try to confuse fans into buying the wrong games and convince them that Story of Seasons is the knock-off even though it’s the other way around. So Harvest Moon A Tale of Two is an authentic Bokujo game but Harvest Moon 3D The Lost Valley isn’t, while Story of Seasons is the real deal… and all came out on the same console, the 3DS. Confusing, isn’t it?

I remember around when the first Natsume Harvest Moon games were coming out, if you tried to clarify the names on their social media discussions, they were actively deleting your comments. It definitely seemed like they were trying to take advantage of the confusion and pinning/highlighting comments like "Oh I loved Harvest Moon 64, I can't wait for this new one!" I think the confusion died down (or at least I hope it did) after Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town. Either that, or people just collectively got tired of Natsume's more Minecraft-inspired Harvest Moon games and don't talk about them ever anymore.

Natsume sure does play dirty… When I was a kid Harvest Moon 64 was my favorite game, in fact it is still my favorite game to this day, and the fact that Natsume put their name in the opening credits before the actual game developers absolutely tricked me into thinking they’re the ones who made it. They also put their name above Victor Interactive Software’s (now part of Marvelous) on the title screen, and even put their name on the front of the game’s American box, while the actual creator’s logo was nowhere to be found! It really hurts that the company I idolized for supposedly making my favorite game as a child was misleading me the whole time, and that they tried to use fans’ misplaced trust to make a quick buck off of the actual developers hard work!
