Hey, Larry. Just wanted to let you know. In an interview in Game Informer back in the early-to-mid 2010s, Miyamoto confirmed that while they're all Bowser's children, Bowser Jr. is Bowser's biological son, but the Koopalings are adopted. He just won't say who Bowser Jr.'s mother is and because Nintendo hasn't thought of one and doesn't plan to.

My favourite legend was in one of the Smackdown games (I think it was Smackdown 2) it was possible to kill Rikishi by throwing him from the hell in a cell a certain amount of times then doing a finisher on him.... or something like that. Disappointed you didn't bring up the "N64 expansion pack was included with Donkey Kong 64 to fix a game breaking bug", where the actual reason of including it was just to avoid customer confusion, and that the team had decided to use the expansion pack far before any such bug (which was unrelated to the expansion pack) came up.

If I recall, the expansion pack doesn't even prevent the bug; it just delays it (and it makes sense that a game that assumes the expansion pak would have a bug that's simply more obvious if the pak wasn't installed.)

@@flametitan100 this is correct. People at rare did not have time to fully polish the game and a really bad memory leak bug in the game was never able to be fixed. The expansion pack was also not a “fix” for the bug, however it GREATLY delayed its eventual crash. No one at rare actually remembers if they were forced to use the expansion pack but evidence actually points to no, as hackers managed to bypass the check at the boot of the game to make the game just run with a regular jumper pack and fount that the game runs just fine as is. It just will crash sooner from the memory leak issue. It’s more likely that the development of the expansion pack and DK 64 being concurrent was just a happy accident, as Nintendo was never keen on making it REQUIRED for any game and used only for enhancing games optionally. In fact only one Nintendo made game requires the expansion pack and that is Legend of Zelda, Majoras mask. Another game that had an extremely rushed development cycle, and likely only needs it because the game was originally to be released for the ill fated N64 DD.

While it's not the music that many people grew up with, if you grew up with Sonic on the pc, then it just makes sense. I grew up with the PC Port before the genesis, and honestly it's really not all that bad. I wouldn't even have that much a problem with it, using the beta music. Sources like did you know gaming have stated that the prototype for super smash bros was called dragon king the fighting game. Years later, dykg came back to say that this is actually a misunderstanding. Never even once considered or heard anyone insinuate that the whole thing couldn't fit on one cart (in fact in more recent years people always talk about how the knuckles cartridge has most of sonic 2 inside of it too)

Matter of fact Gaming Secrets/GameHut (one of the guys behind Travellers Tales) did a breakdown a while back about how the S&K game cart has a regular 2MB ROM chip for the S&K game code, a 256KB ROM chip with S2&K, and has code to detect if you plugged in S2 or S3 - if S3 was plugged in S3's 2MB ROM chip would be placed behind S&K's ROM in the system (making a 4MB game) and data from it would be passed through. But if S&K detected S2's identifier string, then the S&K cart would load up the 256KB S2&K ROM instead to 'patch' Knuckles in to S2. The thing about "S3&K being too big to fit on one cart" is semi-true as the combined data of S3 + S&K wouldn't fit on a regular (and cheaper) 2MB chip but instead would have required a more expensive 4MB chip, so in conjunction with the deadline for the promo, they split the ideas for the combined game across the pair of 2MB ROM chips split between the S3 cart and the S&K cart and developed the Lock-On Technology to accomodate the two games combined. In the end they got S3 out in time for the promo, they got extra dev time for S&K, got more money for being able to sell two games that worked together, and effectively made an early version of DLC in the process.

There is a bit of confusion on the McDonald's part. The issue is that Sega of America made the deal expecting Sonic 3 to be out around then. That forced the situation. It was to meet the deadline that Sega of America ended up setting. It isn't clear that McDonald's was ever aware the game wasn't technically ready, so it isn't likely that McDonald's forced Sega to release the game. Rather, Sega did so as part of the deal. In the end, it took their plans for a 24MB cartridge and caused them to release a 16MB Sonic 3 and a "18"MB Sonic & Knuckles. There is an important difference between the two. With the Berenstain Bears, everyone misremembered it being spelled with a "stein" as if it were German. In Sonic's case, we were always fed this misinformation for decades, so it's not like our memory was failing us...

Back when Super Mario Bros. 3 was released, it was stated in the instruction manual & game guides that the Koopalings were his kids. It wasn't until much later when they conceived the idea for Bowser Jr. that they decided to retcon the idea that the Koopalings were Bowser's kids.

That drawing of "Claudia Koopa" is Bowser in drag from a US comic that took place during the Super Mario 3 era. It also featured Mario & Luigi's favorite comicbook hero "Dirk Drainhead" which makes it much easier to find the whole comic series. It also had a few comics for the Legend of Zelda series that took some dark turns. I'll find the official name and update this comment. So it was the Valliant Comics series. Bowser cross dresses, gets drunk from fast food, and drinks a lot of "sleepy soda".

The Sonic 3 "Happy Meals" explanation is interesting, because usually I just hear about a 4MB ROM being "too expensive" as a single cart. (Technologically this explanation makes even more sense but Sega always did kind of operate on arbitrary promotional dates at the sacrifice of its games.) In any case, the whole of Sonic 3 and the Happy Meals was actually part of my childhood. What I really wish is I could find at least an image of the Happy Meal box, because what's funny about it is it actually had "Flying Battery Zone" printed on it. Anyone in-the-know about Sonic 3 knows that "Flying Battery Zone" ALMOST made it to the split Sonic 3 title, and apparently by the time they printed the boxes they still thought it would be there. In any case, I remember as a kid I first beat Sonic 3 and felt it seemed really short, considering Sonic 2 had more levels. Then the level select / debug code was leaked, and I found the level select with extended zones that weren't in the game, along with a much larger sound track. As a kid I didn't have the resources or wherewithal to put it all together, but then Sonic & Knuckles came out and I understood that Sonic 3 was always "incomplete." At the time S&K was just cool, especially putting Knuckles in Sonic 2 and all that. As an adult, I realized Sega snookered me and got me to pay $60 twice for what was intended to be only one game. I've since referred to Sonic 3 as the "shareware version", since it had that sort of "you get episode 1, now pay to see the rest" kind of feel...
