maybe it's just me, but i genuinely prefer the first arc over the entire story. it was still a haunted cartridge from a old creepy guy, and it was implied the spirit of a dead kid who drowned possessed the cartridge. simple, but effective.

So here's the thing: many people are saying this story was better when it was just a dead kid haunting a cartridge. The thing is, that was never the case from day one. There were hints the BEN wasn't the child who died but something worse imitating him. Ben downed is basically a cosmic horror story. And those are incredibly hard to write in an actual Lovecraftian tale. Everybody loses, period. And if there are any victories their almost always hollow or only temporary. The arg format isn't the best to adapt a story like this since it is a game meant to have a happy ending if you win. Now that doesn't mean Lovecraft light can be terrifying in its own right. I mean, Steven Kings, IT is technically Lovecraft light since Pennywise is defeated in the end. What truly holds back the third act is the whole supernatural ai thing. A creature like BEN is scary because they represent the unknown. When you give them a detailed explanation, they stop being scary. You can still provide them with an origin story that reinforces how alien the monster is. And I guess a digitized hivemind of lost souls is a pretty eldrich concept even if they kind of fail to present it that way, which is why I still like the ending, even if it is flawed. Suppose the entity had to have a backstory. I think it would be more effective if BEN were just luna. Who, by all accounts, was an insane dark fae witch goddess who (liked to mess with people) and was worshiped by weird cults in the woods. Or at least a lot of the minor forest goddesses were portrayed that way ( keyword portrayed) since they were usually themselves aspects of the greek goddesses Artemis and Hecate. so even though we don't know a ton about her, I assume that is also the case (if I am wrong, tell me.) Witch fits BEN pretty well if you ask me. Just because the ben name was stolen from a human male doesn't mean ben is not a female. Witch keeping with the story's themes mirroring Majoras mask would make a lot of sense. Majora itself is often seen as gender-ambiguous.

Well, from what i gather, he was lonely, didn't have alot of friends, and wanted to be like Link in Majora's Mask, he was part of the Moon Children, who was part of Eternity Project, and Ben was the first person they experiented on, and he was digitised into Majora's Mask with his consciousness trapped inside the Elegy of Emptiness statue, the rest is history. I think the whole drowning thing is a hoax made up by the Moon Children to cover EP's tracks
