Curious that the "escape theme" has the extended part that was added for the American NES release (and was absent from the FDS version.) This record was released in Feb 87, but US Metroid didn't come out until August 87, meaning Hip Tanaka had prepared the extended theme at least 6 months in advance.

Maybe he originally wanted to put it in the FDS version, but couldn't for whatever reason. That was the case with Koji Kondo's ending theme used in SMB2J, which included a part he couldn't fit into the SMB1 version because of memory constraints.
