I was an idealistic individual coming out of high school and I felt being a cop would be a good way to help the ppl I live around. Turns out, the police academy sorta weeds those ppl out and alienates them until they just quit. As the sort of ppl the academy actually wants, per the peer to peer treatment and basic training you must do, is those capable and willing to hurt others. There is that famous situation in which police officers were recommended they experience a third party education course on how to change your behavior and be willing to kill. This is something they suggest in my state as well. Never met a good cop in all my days... disappointing reality...

You can also do this with smaller authors. I have email correspondence and free signed copies of books from several fiction authors just because I emailed them to thank them personally for their work and compliment them. Even without the free goodies, I have always gotten a response from a letter/email I've sent to academics or writers. What's even better, is I've been able to ask some authors of academic work even more about the topic that isn't covered in the paper. Turns out, people that are heavily invested in a topic like to talk to people who want to know about the topic, especially if you're versed enough in the topic to let them really info-dump on you.
@drewingconclusions18392 жыл бұрын
Lots of papers will have one of the authors marked as the "corresponding author". They'll be the one to reply fastest and if you have follow-up questions they'll probably have the best handle on answering /getting answers from their colleagues. I once sent an email to the author of an encyclopedia article to ask a curious question I had about gemstones. They hooked me up with a librarian in Germany who did some real research that I could not have done myself. It was incredible! :)

"The happier you are when you win, the more mad you are when you lose" I remember coming to this realization about everything when I was around 14 or 15 years old. I had a lot of sadness and anger and frustration all the time. But I came to this realization that the only reason why someone would be sad or angry or scared is because they are losing a thing that makes them happy or excited. I have a note in a journal from back then where I drew a cup, and the fullness of the cup was happiness, the emptiness of the cup was sadness. The genius teenager solution, of course, was to make the cup smaller. Never care about anything. Never become emotionally invested in anything. If the cup is not big enough to hold a lot of happiness, it is also too small to hold much sadness. If I never love anything, I can never be scared or angry if it gets taken away. It definitely fixed my anger issues, I don't think anyone would ever imagine I had anger control issues. But it makes life rather dull, and it's very difficult to have relationships. I'm still working to express sincere emotions and allow myself to enjoy things over a decade later.

I can relate bro.. all to much unfortunately. I was an ugly rager and I even shattered my hand a few years ago. I missed out on a hero pickup while for the 10,000th time that night while trying to complete a daily in Battlefront (2015).. I was so frustrated that I threw my controller down and started punching the air as hard as I could. Well.. it was dark in the room and I accidentally punched the corner of a filing cabinet and completely shattered my 5th metacarpal (the hand bone that leads to the pinky finger) on my dominant hand. I needed surgery and hardware to fix my hand and I was in a cast of one sort or another for over 4 months and it was over 6 months before I was able to hold anything with that hand. I was about 30 at the time and already had bad arthritis before that.. i’m going on 36 now and my hand hurts whenever it rains or even looks like it’s going to rain. I definitely took a step back from gaming for awhile after that and realized I was in a bad headspace and that winning in video games wasn’t everything and that I shouldn’t ever get so bent out of shape over something so trivial. Just wish I had come to that conclusion before breaking my hand lol

I find that as I've gotten older, I've learned to not take my losses as seriously. Especially in COD I used to get soooo angry when I was up against a team who was absolutely wrecking me. As a kid I broke multiple controllers. These days I find it easier to just laugh it off or get up and take my dogs out, etc, just to get my mind clear for a bit. Haven't raged like that in years now. A good mix of single player games and competitive games also helps. If I'm ever having a bad night while playing Rocket League or Rainbow Six, I just switch over to something like Horizon Forbidden West or Skyrim (which I still play haha). It can help to unwind a bit from those super competitive type games
@Wishuponapancake2 жыл бұрын
it might sound lame or kinda condescending, but what worked for me (and is the best strategy for improving at something) is going into every single match or game thinking not "Okay I gotta win this I can do it lets go" but constantly having the mindset of "what can I learn, what can I currently be doing better?" you need to completely discard the notion of winning or losing, and just think about improving, learning something and saying it to yourself from every mistake. suddenly dying turns from "I suck, I'm garbage/that guy's hacking" to "what went wrong, how do I do things better next time?" it's realizing that dying or losing isn't failing, losing is required to get better at something. I think what people really have to do is actively try and practice this; if you don't mind playing fighting games, I think the best way to really focus on trying to learn this mindset is playing back to back rounds against a friend who's better than you, even better if it's one you might win 1 out of 30 games against, with the sole purpose of practicing this concept. you're getting your ass kicked, and your entire goal is to practice being okay with that and try and constructively think about what you can do better in the moment, not win or have fun or anything else. this helped me a lot, specifically in fighting games to stop mashing and actually think about what buttons i was pressing, but I think it could help other people too.
@morganlak43372 жыл бұрын
All three replies on here outline part of why I'm concerned about this, the solution is you "grow out of it" or just "change your mindset", but what I think really happens is that rage in game sis a manifestation of other insecurities right? So you have to fix those. You don't grow out of it, as you get older you work on yourself and you feel more secure in your identity and place in the world. You don't just decide to change your mindset, your mindset changes gradually as the things outside your life allow you to have that mindset. If you know that your life outside of games sucks, and that these insecurities are still eating away at you, idk I think quitting is by far the best option. But it takes a lot to look inward and recognize that, and then decide to quit

For me, it was self reflection that really helped. Although, I never had outbursts or anything, just internal feelings of frustration, irritation, etc. I eventually came to the realization that the thing I enjoyed about games was learning them, and part of that process inevitably involved failing. After that, losing took on a more rewarding feeling because I only saw it as an opportunity to refine my approach. It also helped to realize my limits and understand there were certain things I'd just never quite "get" or "grasp".

But then I heard about Bet- Really though, MAJOR props for not turning this into a BetterHelp sponsorship. Also the rest of that was true, although thankfully I never break anything when I "rage" (aside from one time when I threw a plastic bottle and it bounced off the floor and gained enough momentum to leave a dent in the wall NOT MY FAULT, it's just a very bad feeling to have and I don't want to have it. And yes, it is embarrassing as well. Although idk about that statistic about it not being the game's fault 99% of the time, are you sure you're a real gamer? Maybe I'm just not taking multiplayer games into account enough, those are probably responsible for at least 50% of rage quits which usually wouldn't be the game's fault. But I mostly play singleplayer... so it's usually just because I suck at games... but not always! Certainly not 99% of the time... I'd hope... But I do think a good number of games are pretty unfair. Am I just making excuses? Maybe? So what? Maybe I like games to be easy, is that so bad? Somehow I feel like I've gotten off topic, even though the video was largely about video games. Anyway, great job.

Excellent video man! Hit me right in the genuine feels. I immediately snapped back to 2010 and remembered an old Halo Reach rage video my brother candidly made one afternoon without my knowing and being fairly surprised at the ridiculous crap coming out of my mouth. Lately I find a mantra of sorts for me has been "Chucklin', not White Knucklin'." Always a nice, quick reminder as to why we all play games to begin with. Keep up the badass work....DUDE.

leo you have created another banger. i don't normally deal with rage when it comes to video games but I hope to be able to keep a similar disposition that you did in that final clip in my daily life. To let more things roll off my back, you make it look very easy!

This video was genius and made me genuinely reflect on my anger issues in other aspects of life (not gaming tho cuz I'm that good and 6 weeks clean of league). But that last segment had me fucking dying 💀💀💀💀💀💀 I'm gonna be super positive in the face of unbridled rage from now on, it's just never not hilarious 💀💀💀💀💀

I was absolutely not expecting you to drop Noah Caldwell-Gervais' name here. That was a great joke, though I hope people who don't know him see this comment so they know he's not actually ragey, and he does some of the best games criticism around!

Much like many gamers and their esport of choice, I find that I can't help but become emotionally invested in every single one of your videos. Even the stupidest joke line can lead to introspection. Not sure how you make every video feel so casual yet hit so deep

Yeah anger outbursts are a problem even outside of games. After kicking something real hard and being injured for a while, I decided to get into therapy. Haven't hit something in a while.

Damn man, I love video games, but I also don't care enough about winning or losing to destroy myself or my stuff. It just makes me feel sorry for people when I see or hear them flip out over losing. Also that's a dope shirt.

Oh man, stay strong, therapy helped me with a lot too. Still need more probably definitely, but it takes a lot to speak about it to a camera like this and is commendable, in my opinion. Hang in there, keep it up. This video inspired me.

I'm in love with this video. The way it pivots from a somewhat jokey discussion with dark serious undertones to a period of immense masculine vulnerability is really beautiful to see! I know we talk a /lot/ about how men need to talk about their emotions, but it's /hard/ and anyone who has the guts to do what you've done here has my respect. Whilst I don't really struggle with interacting with videogames with anger in the same way some others do, I definitely have a few similarly shameful memories where anger has overtaken me that I really don't know how to process. It's been to a point for a while where I'm really uncomfortable with anger as an emotion, and this has certainly given me something to reflect on in my self. This, I think, is a text book case of the strength of conversations about emotions. I might also say that I've quoted your Amulet of Bral'Doon video in disucssions about my depression about a dozen times in talking to others about my depression, and in general I really appreciate this subtext in all your content. What I'm trying to say I guess, is thank you!

This video really helped me calm down and made me realize that I needed to calm my crap. Thanks Leo, you might suck at Rainbow according to Officer Buttmunch, but your an mvp in my book.

As a woman I play lots of games but don't tend to get angry, and find gamer rage videos scary (a bunch of yelling men in a fit of rage isn't usually a very fun environment for women). But this video is v interesting, with online games i can have outburst and say "come in that was bs" or something but then I usually calm down knowing its usually my own skill that is holding me back and this temporary loss is just part of the journey to get better. But from soft games (and most recently star wars jedi survivor) are usually the only ones that truely show off all aspec of the gamer souls. I've hit my desk so hard, I've called Ornstein and Smough things I shall never repet and I have gotta light head from jumping out of my chair and celebrating when I kill a boss literally yelling at the screen and flipping it off as they die.
