No video game is perfect, but every so often we get a game in our hands that feels unfinished and messy. How does this happen? Let's talk.

Honestly, with how detailed and good some games are, I really don't mind that system. Don't crucify me, but to get an earlier release on something like GTA6, I would pay $60 and wait for update patches. Games haven't increased in price that much for the amount that we can get out of them. I remember as a kid going to buy Mario RPG on SNES at Toys R Us and turning right back around without it because it was like $40. Possibly $50. 10/20 bucks more for the kind of things coming out as of late, is fair in my opinion.

I mean when they pay someone, that person is obliged to make a report on the report he sees as opposed to you that buy an early access game where you don't need to do this. Also when they hire testers it's because they want to test the game without the public knowing the existence of the game.

Honestly, thank you very much for making the distinction between the dev teams and the decision makers. The devs do not hold ALL of the keys for development unless they are independent. We put a lot of blame on dev teams when they're working as hard as they can and dealing with flak from incompetent publishers and leadership.

... It really depends. Some companies do it because it is actually needed and they do intend to do good by their customers, but there are always the bad apples that take advantage of these things and ruin it for the good ones. You should either avoid works in progress, or be a more educated buyer knowing the risk by researching who you are supporting. I have seen terribly obvious cash grabs make tons of sells which baffled me, and those with good backgrounds and reputation get nearly nothing... People do not research or make truly educated purchases anymore. They are sold by the flashiest things, and then go full hate and " Vs. the machine Mode" when they fuck up. They act first before thinking basically and blame everyone else for it. So I would say it's both some companies taking advantage of this, and the consumers being more sheep like/ignorant with their money. Not to mention the need for some to actually do this method to stay afloat as they try to finish them game.

Its 1 Reason why I have so little interest with New Games nowadays. They tend to be incomplete or rushed and money grabbing. Which is why I prefer playing Old Games like Borderlands, Bulletstorm, Halo (Bungie Trilogy), Max Payne, etc... They are complete, barely rushed and fun due to the Quality and Quantity of Content. Even if there are problems, Patches and Mods are relatively easy to acquire. So yeah, sticking with Older Games.

I believe the market is just half and half between finished and unfinished games from large publishers. It's simple really, all you gotta do is look and see which publishers are more consistent with releasing unfinished games, and don't consider buying any of their games unless you know the development length of that game is significant (see the amount of time it took to make Witcher 3 or BotW as opposed to almost any assassin's creed game or most EA titles) that alone will tell you if a game might have been rushed. A little research can go a long way

Maybe it wasn't the game that was promised and yes it got linear towards end do to changing of original story and not enough time to finish, but if asked did I enjoy it, did I feel better off than most games that say they are finished but not. The answer is yes, the story is good enough to make me cry and I dont feel paywalled lol

JoshuaNY93BX I felt robbed because the gameplay isn't deep in the slightest the combat in the endgame is the same as the early game and controlling only Noctis is boring. The story isn't told well everything that would make us understand what the characters feel is locked away behind a DLC, a movie or a crappy anime on KZbin. It's a trash game that was unfinished at launch and I won't pay 150€ to have the complete edition when the second season pass will be out. This is a true shame of a selling policy and it shows the utmost disrespect for SE towards their early buyer. FFXV doesn't deserve the praise it gets, if only because that horrible sale policy

It's just that everyone behind doing anything miss the very important steps of making a game good. People need to have a list to look at when creating content: -Idea -Talking about the idea (not taking every advise just the constructive ones) -Creating from scratch -Showing the Idea to close friends -mTHEN and only THEN start developing the game -Set a reasonable scheduled date which doesn't have to be 10 years but not even an year which is not enough imo -Come up with ideas that will make the game more profitable but keeps the game well balanced and really enjoyable -Make sure at least 90% of the game is complete before releasing -Patch the game to complete it as close to 100% within the first 2 months. This is my opinion as a non-game maker tho, so I might be wrong, but I think this way developers make a great game and gety paid really good for it, publishers make a lot of moneky out of the game itself and DLCs/Loot Boxes/whatever as long as it stays well balanced and gamers are happy to spend their money on the products and will close an eye or two over a few unfinished things if the game itself is good.

@TheMcal9909
@TheMcal9909 6 жыл бұрын
The real reason, is the business model. It has slowly changed over time from what i had when i was growing up. Game companies earned their money by selling games. To do this you had to make good complete games or straight out con people into buying your game it didnt matter how long people played your game aslong as you sold alot of copies. Now the business model has shifted due to the digital distribution times we live in too keeping players playing a game for longer, thus increasing potential to earn more from micro transactions. One easy way to keep people playing your game is to release a shell of a game and add to it over time (thats what DLC in most cases is). Keeping people on that treadmill. Its no longer as profitable to just release a good game and be done with it.

true is (at least part of it): people who doing game should receive payment, many times we heard about developers who didn't saw payment by few MONTHS, so like GR said, sometimes beta-test/kickstarter or something is needed to keep money stream (for payments). Second thing: currently games are way more complex than 5-10 years ago. Pipelines are changed, technology too. Obviously we should expect that one platform game than multi-platform title (unless they find extra experience people do do that) but that is impossible when point one money are not on table. So in that situation or they publish unfinished/polish game for way bigger audience and then patch it or create total or other platform delay - if game isn't good enought, then there will be not money for further work third: game publishers like GR said have expectations, they counted how much money they can put on table and still earn $. But did you know that most of money (around 50-70%) goes for commercials and PR ? yep, sometimes most of money are going to promote game, not create it. Nobody wan't pay to business. About point nr.2 - alpha, beta, milestones etc need to be done before or in x period of time, because game studio is like kitchen. You order multiple thing on plate, but to create it in kitchen, people need something what other people done. So if one dev group have delay, then everybody need wait. No game char. model? then we can;t texture them. No localisation/environment model finished? then light guy can't work to create correct light setup, collision can't be verify, no way to finish cinematic etc etc etc. corners cut everywhere Publishers create that situation by them-self and inspiration have been free market where other just wait to take possible income for themself. Lower price, better title, new engines (untested enough) - everything to make us buy their game not other company. We vote by wallets? sort of, but thing about yourself like number not customer. Number that was already counted years before you stand next to game in box or before you (maybe yes maybe no) click that "pay now" button. Please remember, developers are human with families, lives and needs (like food), they done everything what they can in that moment when they were able to do something. Trust me, most of "us" (i want work in that industry) love or at least want do stuff, but creativity and attention to details and work can't connect unless money are not important (from payment point of view)

Here's a crazy idea: how about letting the people actually MAKING THE GAME set the timeframe for when it can be completely finished? They would know better than anyone how long it takes to make a game, after all. If it's a bad time for release just push it back more, which gives devs and beta testers more time for fine-tuning.

Forgive me if someone else has said this (didn't find such a comment) but are there really more unfinished games these days? I remember when I was a kid and we didn't have all this access to the internet, and our only news about how good a game was going to be was what the magazines printed and the expectations we had from a prequel, if applicable. Then eventually there were demos, but those sometimes just so happened to be the best and most bug-free section of the game. But even so, I played many games that were great if you could look past the bugs. The difference I see nowadays is only expectations. Back in the day, if a game released in a terrible state, it most likely would stay in that state (except for some games on PC) and it was just a reality that had to be accepted. But most of us probably don't always buy games right when they come out at full price but wait until they are the price we would pay for them or at least until we know that they are quality games. With patches, that means that we usually play some pretty well ironed-out games. So when we pour our cash into a game we are really excited about at full price, then of course we are disappointed that it doesn't seem to hold up to the standards we have come to expect. So we have only become more critical if you ask me. Of course, paying $20 for some tiny expansion or armor sets that should have been in the game is some serious bullshit. That has changed.

I feel like Recore would have been a better example to use instead of No Man's Sky. NMS was always meant to be a purely 100% exploration type of game, and when the dev realized that it still didn't meet consumer expectations, they went above and beyond to patch it into a game that was good. There was little/no plot on purpose in NMS, so comparing it to Witcher 3 doesn't really work. Recore, however, had a core mechanic of the game locked out by being DLC, and you couldn't actually complete the game without it. That right there is completely fucked up. Besides that, there's a huge difference between patches that fix bugs and glitches, and DLC that costs anywhere between $10-50 in order for the game to be and feel complete.

I 100% understand microtransactions and unfinished games, since the prices of games haven't rose at all since it hit $60 and games are only getting larger and more expensive to make, just think you would need like 6-8 textures from an older game to meet the resolution of a modern game's textures, and thats not even going into how much larger/longer modern games are. So I don't mind paid DLC and cosmetic only microtransactions, its just when we start getting mobile game style Pay to win/skipping content stuff that starts making me angry. So word to all publishers which non of which are going to even care about; keep doing DLCs just make them worth what we're paying for them (Bungie I'm looking at you, Give us something other than reskins in Beyond Light).

Games nowadays rely heavily on marketing. When you have spent millions for marketing one year beforehand you just simply do not skip the release date. Doing this could lead to even poorer sales -> less money -> lay offs and possible bankruptcy. Planning couple years ahead is a really difficult task, yet it must be done in today's environment. Companies like EA or Ubisoft are very reliant on having their games marketed to have any sales. Planning for a marketing campaign might begin 3 years before the launch of the game. Delaying the game launch for even couple of months could reset a big part of the work done already, meaning the loss of tens of millions. So it's simply more practical to release the game unfinished than to move the launch. Also, you don't want to compete with another title for the attention. So you try to time the launch so there's no competitors. This is really a big problem. Look at Battleborn vs Overwatch. Having a bad time to launch a game can really destroy the work you've done during the past years. Companies like Blizzard are one of the few who can afford to make finished game and release it when it's done simply because of their status. They are trusted by the players unlike EA or Ubisoft. It's easy to be captain hindsight and say "they should've thought it before". But in the end this is the situation they're in and are forced to spend tons of money to overcome their reputation. Not saying Blizzard doesn't need to spend money on marketing, but they have a big advantage here. Also all the stores have some kind of approval process and before that it has to be approved by someone who paid for the project i.e. publisher or investor. You also need to have your game discs prepared and shipped in many cases weeks before the launch. So in many cases the released version has to be ready months before the official launch. It's not like the companies wouldn't like to have all ready by then. They simply are forced to spend a lot of time to finish the game after submitting the final version of the game to publishers etc. And trust me, they work long hours at this point. Organizing a project with tens or hundreds of members is a reeaaally hard. If one person makes a mistake it could push the whole project for months. Also, some mistakes made earlier in the process are not simply fixable later on. Or not in a reasonable budget or time frame anyway. Many cases these are something the developers know of, but simply can't afford to fix anymore. But in the end it's the customers who decide. If enough people stop buying unfinished games then companies stop making them. Or the ones who do will be cut out by the ones who figure out how market works. TL;DR - It's cheaper to release unfinished games than spend more time to finish them - Making games is hard - Stop buying unfinished games

When Battlefront I came out a couple of years ago I really wanted to buy it but it lacked content which was then blocked behind paid DLC.... to me that was a total rip off so I decided not to buy it. Last year (2017) Battlefront II promised free DLC and I was cautiously optimistic, only to find then the loot box pay to win system. I didn’t buy the game, I waited until March of this year when they rearranged the system with no payed loot boxes and a good progression system (and let me say I actually like the game a lot and am happy with my purchase, but still I had to wait half a year for them to make it right). That is what everyone should do, inform themselves and wait enough time for the game to be good or skip it, only then games release standards will improve.

I have to be honest, I’m not impressed by Falcon’s assertion that all publishers are bad and ruining the industry. Yes, there are loads of problems with publishers as a whole and with individual publishers, but, the men and women that work at various publishers *do* know and understand game development and/or business. They do a lot of work that goes mostly unknown, overlooked, and end up bearing a lot of the blame for issues with games; regardless if the issues stem from the publisher’s involvement.

It's because of people who kept on crying over games not coming out and crying over constant delays. I'd rather just wait longer for the game to come out and be great from the start. If the game is bad or requires a massive long af patch at the first day then I'll send that game back and just not bother. I don't have time to get delayed for hours over one game and even if I did patch the game I always keep on forgetting that game existed because of my other things in life and all I have is just another game collecting dust that I've never played... so that game just goes back to the store... Sadly can't get refunds because the seal has been broken. *sigh* I remember back when we had a 7 day money back rule.

There is such thing as unfinished quality; which is not the same as unfinished story. A game in itself can be eternally unfinished as long as the players want the story continued, but neglecting quality matters, just as much as the story. Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a rushed game; I knew this the first hour in, and that is why I abandoned it after a few hours of game play. Glitches, errors, textures that are not loading, these matter, a lot. A good game needs to be fluid, cycling interesting content like a spool and entirely original from competing games and/ or it's own previous releases. Throwing a game out and expecting a good reception will not always work. M.

There is a bigger focus on quantity than quality these days... We are getting less and less carefully crafted games and more of these super content heavy games that just throw things together without focusing on all the tiny details and polish. Back then had a lot of bad, unfinished looking games too, but they seemed to be from the really small developers or those quick shovelware looking games. I wish devs scaled back their games and focused on making a polished game. I love Nintendo for their polish in some of their games and though Detroit Become Human was really well done!

Answer: because they can. The nature of the internet gives them the ability to update it in perpetuity ... except the game came from Double Fine you forget about patches after a few months, max. There are multiple AAA titles that will never be finished and sometimes not even playable. Early Access is even worse as you're paying the studio to not finish the game. Crowd funding is a crapshoot.

I literally watched a review that gave a fully released game a 9/10 and then said it would be good in a year with updates...if I bought a book from amazon that I had to buy the last 5 chapters when they were done 6 months later then I would not buy the book. Why should video games be special. I'm fine with large scale DLCs and patching a few bugs but "service" model games or day one DLCs just don't get buys from me.

the reason why they release unfinished games is bc ppl believe that if u release an unfinished game you will get new content and new updates regularly while the devs are patching it up while most gamers believe that once a game gets delayed it will be polished however no new content, no new updates, and no new hype even if the game is so polished and brand new no one will play it coz the hype died down easily for example games like overwatch2, diablo immortal, diablo 4, and most likely halo infinite but for me personally rushed games are shit and delayed are better

The day one patch is not because the game isnt finished. Games go to cert 1-2 months before released and the game is locked down. Devs still fix bugs during that time. Testing goes on. So thats what the patch is... everything thats after the game is locked down for 1st party cert. Because devs cant change anything to a build once its off to cert...

Because they can get away with it nowadays. Back during the 6th generation and before that internet when it came to console gaming was very much in a primitive stage. Not everyone had access so they had no choice but to release quality and finished products. But from the introduction of the 7th generation onward they released features to the mainstream dlc, frequent updates, online play which all are great in concept but they used it to take the piss they used these tools to cut corners releasing shitty games for premium with the weightless promise of fixing the shit they spewed out with future updates. Tools that should of been used to increase longevity of games and give us overall greater content for our cash has been used to take advantage.

Simple answer.....people keep buying them..... as long as people buy unfinished products companies will keep selling unfinished products....want this shit to stop.....stop buying them..... Edit: and its not just unfinished games, microtransactions(i understand some microtransactions are needed...like free to play games and companies that give ALL dlc free they need to make their money back) and rushed buggy releases are just as bad as an unfinished game....

...because consumers want more in shorter time what leads to computer generated content if we dont be cautious. Otherwise this human art ends into endless machine rubbish. Without emotion. I, Wolfpit, who produces the Wolfpit Games like The Lore of Canis is filled to the brim with my emotions and perspectives on the world. It is art. And it is not finished because my capacities are humanlike. I hope you understand that not any developer has the possibilities to put all its love into a project. Indie Developer - people like me - have the opportunity by using tools to do the same with games as the printer sprouted into more authors and people doing creative writing, just to enhance and enrichen the society with their contents and perspectives. Therefore my games are not that finished as I wished because the world and the ideas are still in evolution, to put it like that way. You have spotted many things which are applyable to any field or art. Thank you for this video!

Why? Short answer... greed. Long answer, because there are a finite amount of gamers and the gaming industry is constantly looking for more angles to constantly mine money outside of the one-time purchase of their products from that finite amount of consumers. Selling a broke ass game at launch which requires a day-1 patch to actually work and then DLC to get the full experience plays into this economic model of mining more money from the limited consumer base. Whether or not that money is needed to make a profit from a product is irrelevant. It is the nature of corporations to never be content with current profit margins. They must always be making more or be deemed a failure.

Because people will pay regardless then complain about the game being unfinished, the devs will release several updates to fix the games bugs,people will be then happy to pay for the dlc to devs announce, even though it should of been part of the game when it was purchased. Companies will keep doing this shit if people are willing to pay, worse is that it'll keep getting worse, soon they'll just sell you empty box and tell you to use your imagination,,, as consumers though we have the power and the only way these kind of things will stop is when we stop paying for unfinished products

Haven't watched the vid but this is my theory. Easy Access. For years Easy Access has being a 'thing' and companies have realised that people will pay to play these buggy and unfinished games, and so that has allowed gaming companies to lower their efforts and released 'finished' games that are low quality and buggy.
