First one I thought of was Sly Cooper. Thieves in Time ended on a cliffhanger of Sly being stuck in Egypt, and Sanzaru has basically left it there. Supposedly, the story was going to end in a dlc, but the game didn’t do too well, and it was dropped.

Yeah you can blame Konami for that one. Once they knew they were done with Hideo, they forced him out, regardless of how finished that game was. It makes you wonder what could have been if they had stopped bickering, and we'd probably have Silent Hills by now 😢

I actually have really fond memories of playing that Prince of Persia reboot on PS3. I didn’t have the experience of playing the originals to compare it too and I honestly just really loved the architecture and overall design of the world you get to explore. And I remember being really surprised at the ending but I didn’t hate it at all, I thought it was pretty intense and not at all common to have an ending like that

Legacy of Kain was a good series with a great story that doesn't really end. It's left up in the air. For years there were rumors the series would get a new game, especially after an Easter Egg showed up in one of the Tomb Raider games. But if I remember correctly, the original lead of the project and the champion of the series continuing has since left the company.

Don't forget Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. The game ended with Sly trapped in Ancient Egypt. That game came out 10 years in 2013 and Sly is still trapped with the devs saying they don't have any plans to make another Sly Cooper game.

The one that still hurts me to this day is Anachronox, bought it when it came out and the cliffhanger ending really was a punch in the guts when it was obvious the sequel would never happen. A more recent one is Days Gone - some silliness in the story aside, I enjoyed where it was going and the revelation in the final hours could have had some great implications for a sequel.

Anachronox, it ended with such a massive cliffhanger and promise of more, fantastic and amazing game that is basically a 'Western JRPG', with dumb humor, set in space on many planets (and you even have a planet as a party member, yes, a whole planet you previously explored). I need to finish the tale of Sly Boots and his dead wife who is inhabiting the mouse cursor you play the game with. This game is old and clunky, but it is an absolute treat. Be right back, reinstalling.

I honestly can't believe more people can't see the potential of the original game. Then imagine what could be done NOW! If they were able to pull off what they did When they did, it was AMAZING. People nowadays way too easily nitpick it. Seems like they forget the limitations that existed when it was made. In my opinion its a perfect example of What they could do, and do well. So they should deserve full support to create further work since they did so well. Its honestly so well made for the time that it came out.

I'm thankful to see Mega Man Legends mentioned, especially as it seems to be mostly forgotten by everybody. However, you missed a really great one to mention: Xenosaga. Although the rumors are unconfirmed, they hold that the reason the series ended after Episode 3, and left well over half of the story untold, is because of copyright issues regarding characters that would be getting an increasing degree of appearance in later entries. Characters who appear in Xenogears. Really, if those rumors are true, then without someone with some very deep pockets coming along and going to great lengths to clear up that problem then Xenosaga CAN'T be finished, regardless of what us gamers want.

i would love to get a prototype 3 because the 1st game has loose ends related too the web of intrigue that where never answered in prototype 2 and heck prototype 2 story ending was a huge cliffhanger in general due to the hint of a third game and so much more. but radical entertainment is gone i believe sadly but if ACTivison ever decided to resurrect the prototype franchise or even remaster the 1st 2 games for series x i would buy them in a heart beat.

​@@KainYusanagithat was exactly the plan, and the final game in that series would have been a "Ratchet and Clank All 4 One" type thing, where you could switch between all four or play online co-op. I say "was" because THQ died and scattered to the winds, along with the original developer Vigil. Members of that team have been reassembled under the Gunfire Games label, and are currently heavily invested in Remnant From the Ashes. It's possible we'll see a return, but in what form no one knows. I think THQ Nordic is currently porting old releases to not only gauge interest, but also to fund future projects. Fingers crossed

My choice for this list is Conduit 2. The Conduit was popular enough to get a second game. Lots of conspiracy storyline involving the all seeing eye, aliens, Atlantis, and more as you try to defend earth. Jump to the end of the of the second game where a dormant alien spaceship is on its way to earth and a giant portal opens with men in space armor saying they are ready to help you in the battle to come. Oh and two of those men are George Washington and Abraham Lincoln decked out in space armor. Yep would really love to finish that cliffhanger.

I'd like the add another honorable mention: Alter Echo. The story seems to be quite neatly tied off at the end of it; the BBEG is beaten, our hero Nevin and one of the two crewmates he came to this planet with are on a spaceship headed home, galaxy saved, all's well. Then one more cutscene plays showing the body of Nevin's other crewmate, who at this point had been dead for several hours (about half of the story); the eponymous Echo, who'd been guiding Nevin throughout the game, tells her to wake up. Cut to black. "There is much for us to do." Roll credits. Naturally there's no explanation offered as to what Echo has in mind, but IMO the really interesting bit to all this is that there's no discernible reason why Echo needs her help; now freed from the BBEG's control, Echo's capable of reshaping the planet on a whim, and with the schematics already available could even craft an entire fleet of star-hopping warship-drones in seconds... so what could an ordinary human bring to the table?

Golden Sun! Golden Sun 2 had a hell of a cliffhanger ending. After many years, they miraculously released Golden Sun 3 as an 11th hour DS title (which instantly looked like crap next to 3DS games, but that's besides the point), and they never deal with the new villain reveal at the end of 2. Instead of wrapping up the series in what would surely be the last entry to get made, they ended it with more unanswered questions.

The Long Dark gets an honorable mention from me here. In the story mode, Wintermute's 5th and final episode is still locked and no ETA on it's release. Hinterland Studio actually just released a new expansion pack just yesterday, but the actual story remains unfinished 5 years after its initial release.

Killzone 3 was a good ending, but the 4th game Shadow fall bring a lot of thing to the story and didn't answer all of them. The ending was not that bad as most game's on this list, but still need a new Killzone, because there's still so much in this series.

The 2008 Prince of Persia game did have a sequel, it was called "Prince of Persia The Fallen King" and it was on the Nintendo DS only. It continues the story and has a concrete ending.

Great list! One of my frustrating ones is Mass Effect Andromeda. I know they released a book about the Quarian Ark, but I don't care. I want to play it, not read it. They are other loose ends too that are never finished off. Hopefully we will get some resolution with the next Mass Effect. I would love to see them just drop a patch and DLC of the Quarian Ark right before the next Mass Effect but we all know that's not going to happen.

I do honestly like each of the main Dark Siders games, I couldn't get into the side one. I do hope that we possibly get another prequel so we'd get Strife's story during the same time frames 2 and 3 are in along with a sequel to continue the story from 1. Anyone remember Anachronox? A sci fi RPG which ends with a party character betraying everyone and opening the gateway into the previous iteration of the universe and letting the bad guys escape. The final scene is the party gathering together again presumably to go into the gate and stop the bad guys, but we never got the sequel.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West Also Alan Wake's wife isn't trapped in the darkness. She died right from the beginning. The darkness made her drowned so Alan would try to use the book's magic to get her back. Obvioisly this is all the darkness's plan to make Alan write something that the darkness want. At the end of Alan Wake dlc he sacrifice himself by staying inside the dakrness and write everything go back to normal. So in the end the wife and everybody else is saved. But Alan himself got trapped inside the dimension.

Falcon! How can you make this list and not include The Legacy of Kain!? This series was one of my childhood favorites, but had at least 7 canceled sequels. Probably more. Which is painful as hell when you consider the surprisingly good story it told and massive cliffhanger ending we were left with. Super unlikely to ever get closure on this one, but I'd be super stoked if anyone ever did finish this story.

For the most offender has to be Kingdom Hearts. Like really. Twenty years, for a franchise that still getting new games, and it is not over yet. Each game brings more questions than answers. The real issue that Kingdom Hearts losing its target audiance over the years. I started playing the franchise at 17 years old, when I was fine with the stupid story. Now I'm 30....

We need another Mega Man Legends game, one without the tank controls from the first, but similar RPG-style elements. I really loved the towns and exploring a bit of the world, even though it was a linear experience. The Legends Series was so good! Tail Concerto also appeared to have taken inspiration from those games too - pre-solatorobo.

As much as Anthem was terribly handled, I really enjoyed the game, and I engaged with 75% of the story, the later game started having alot of holes, but I would have enjoyed the story continuing. So many great things in that game wasted.

As a huge fan of the franchise, Mass Effect: Andromeda absolutely should be on this list too. Even the upcoming 5th game is unlikely to really tie everything up from ME:A. It might have a couple answers, sure, but probably many more questions, too.

Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May Cry immediately comes to my head whenever I think of unfinished games. Sure, the plot isn't something important for a DmC game but the game got too much hate despite it being an amazing game. I really loved how Dante and Vergil interacted lke actual brothers, the amazing combat and the really awesome inverse level. With DMC V being a huge hit and Ninja Theory moving on Hellblade, I don't see any hope of a sequel to DmC.

Toonstruck is the one unresolved cliffhanger that drives me nuts! It's the best point-and-click ever, but its second act is cut short. For those who haven't played: it's literally Roger Rabbit meets Monkey Island meets Wizard of Oz. (No joke, Christopher Lloyd and Dan Castelanetta play the main characters!)

Another honorable mention is Sly 3: Thieves in Time. To me, the last secret ending to the game left on a HUGE cliffhanger where Sly is stuck in, what I would assume, is ancient Egypt. So, it begs a lot of questions that deserves some answers.
