My mind actually went to frustrated parents - which I'll never understand. If my son or daughter worked their ass off to afford a console and a few games, I'd keep that in mind if the same console ended up warranting some punitive measures. Lock it away, sure, or maybe just use the console's Parental Controls or some external app for your TV to monitor their use - but busting or throwing away perfectly functional hardware is just dumb. I'm reminded of that viral video of a father unloading a hand cannon's worth of ammo in his daughter's HP laptop because of failed grades. Yeah. Nice going there, Captain Testosterone, I'm sure that's going to motivate your daughter into being forward when it comes to her online habits!

I have to say the kid that bought PS4 for fruit is quite smart. I did several times something similar. I would go to the supermarket and bought a bedcover, but inside I would put 3 PC games (full boxes, not like nowadays that we have DVD boxes, which would make it easier to put many more boxes). Then I would just leave the bedcover in the parking lot and would just take home the games. I manage to "buy" a lot of games for a good discount. The principal you need to do is to act normal, not like you are stealing something, because I did it many times.
