Gaunter O'Dimm is the best version of this imo. You randomly talk to him in the opening quest, and then he does actually appear as a random NPC throughout the game. Then in the DLC he's revealed to be this wildly powerful demon that traps people into curses

That what my choice for this list as well. What made is more shocking is that some of them you made friends with, (Fire Dragon God) some gave you important items that helped you on your journey (Water Dragon God giving you Ice elemental to free the lava in Mount Pyre) others got you out of jam (Sky Dragon God rescuing you when the Dead sea world started collapsing after you defeated Miguel) and ALL gave you Summons and Dragon Tears. So when the big reveal happened in Disc 2 that they was playing you the whole time, and used you as a pawn so that they can merge and become the Time Devourer, I was flabbergasted! 😱 Great game, btw.

Persona 4, Good Ending & True Ending plot twist was quite shocking imo.. Adachi is sus, but u wouldn't suspect him unless u comnect all of the stuff, not to mention namatame suddenly pop ups at the end, this one mess with players.. While the attendant, that first headache was sus.. but first time playing, didn't think much of it.. There are hints, but still tho..

Hmmm... actually i'd say The Watchers who opened the Portal in Drakengard 3 were the real villains. Or at least Nier who doomed Humanity in a seemingly selfish act. Devola and Popola were basically just following their programming and trying to protect what's left of humanity. If Nier hadn't defeated the Shadowlord, Gestalts and Replicants would've been fused back together (with humanity probably still being doomed because Replicants can't reproduce). Personally i don't think that there is a "true" villain in Nier: Replicants became self-aware, they got a consciousness of their own. At least to a certain extend. Now who has the bigger claim? The Gestalts over their Replicant bodies or the Replicants who just want to live (that question still divides players ^^) Devola and Popola were just inbetween all of that but i wouldn't say that they were the villains of the game.

Imagine a game that actually had dynamic story elements that affected the entire game and could play out differently every time you play through it. Like starting a game with several assistants, but one of them is randomly picked to become the main villain by the end of the game, or one of the big bad's key lieutenants defects to help you but it's random which one will do it. It would be like random events in game, but they actually have MAJOR implications and changes to the overall story. With just a few of things like this you could have over 10 different endings easily.

Airy being evil and the villain all along is very similar to a fairy called Lee from Yugioh’s World Chalice cards. She convinces the hero party to search out items to destroy invading machines robots which are in fact the good guys. Then steals the main heroines body for her own.

Wesker is a no brainer, and Adachi actually kind of blew my mind when it was revealed he was the main villain. I know a lot of people say they already knew it was him, but I didn't 🙃

Adachi having a connection to the first two being a detective, the letter sent to the house, and his over the top quirky behavior & facial expression (kinda sus).. but unless u really pay attention & connect the dot, u wouldn't find out, especially when namatame show up acting like a suspect.. Izanami on the other hand, has one huge hint, the first day MC arrived, after the handshake, he got a weird headache.. that is a big sus.. but because she only appeared once in the story, first time player would forget that character.. unless adachi is caught.. why? Because after he is caught, they characters have 1 weird question, how did they got their power in the first place..

Thats so true about Lucy Stillman in AC. It was such a cliffhanger thing in AC:B, but hardly anything comes of it. I had to google it to understand she was a double DOUBLE agent. She was so nice and trustworthy, i think the writers just wanted a cliffhanger.

One of my faves, is in the Lord of the Rings Online game: Sarah Oakheart. She's this old women you come across in multiple areas. Each time, she is 'caught up in some trouble' and you need to safely escort her: lead her out out of some prison pen, undead barrows, goblin camp, whatever. And, like all escort quests, the brain-dead NPC rushes around, pulling more mobs on you, getting herself in trouble before you get yourself out of the previous troubles. Fast forward months later, you get called by her to escort her to an area in the heart of the enemies' territory. This time she boldly just strolls through, then announces herself as the new big bad. You've been advancing her goals for ages, and yes, that escort npc literally was trying to get you killed. It was a glorious trolling.

Replaying tales of vesperia right now and many of the villains in the game are surprises because you spend so much time taking down cartoonishly villainous characters that the real puppet masters are quite the holy crap moments. (Also some characters you thought were going to be big bads or at least sub bosses turning out to be helpful)

The Elder God from Soul Reaver. Took until the 2nd SR before the truth emerged on that one. The Watcher from Darksiders 3, who it turns out is actually Envy, the first of the Seven Deadly Sins you thought you killed at the start of the game. Wesker, from Resident Evil. Need I say more? Atlas from Bioshock. Another offscreen guy in the chair type who turns out to be Fontaine, the main villain. Miller from Metal Gear Solid. Pretty sure nobody could call that one.

Dude I have to say, the Batman telltale series is the best version of Batman in my opinion. The origin story and Bruce Wayne’s cool James Bond style is really amazing. Plus the bat suit looks really cool! What I really like the most, is how they handled the father/son relationship with Alfred in this game. You can choose to avoid the ridiculous line “you’re not my father blah blah”(i’m looking at you Batman 2022. Hate that line) lol 😂. I’ll admit, I almost tear up a bit when you can tell Alfred “you’re family”.

A character belonging on this list imo is Duran from Starcraft Broodwar. Starts out as a rebel fighting against the evil emperor Mengsk. Helps the United Earth Directorate to dethrone Mengsk. Plays the commanders of the UED and turns them against eachother while tricking them into almost destroying their best weapon against the Zerg. Turns out to be infested and under Kerrigans control. Helps Kerrigan brutally slaughter all Terran and Protoss opossition that is trying to defend the Galaxy from beeing destroyed by the Zerg. Disappears without any explanation UNLESS you unlock a secret mission which reveals he serves a dead god that wants to destroy the universe. Returns in Starcraft 2 disguised as Dr. Narud. Helps turning Kerrigan back into a human and rescue the galaxy from the Zerg. Turns out he only helped because 1st Kerrigan was the only one who could defeat to the dead god Amon. 2nd he used Kerrigan's psionic powers to revive Amon. Somewhere along the way he tortures one of the UED officers and turns him into a Zerg. And builts an alien hybrid army that can enslave Terran, Zerg and Protoss alike. Basically he always presents himself as an ally at first only to betray whoever falls for it in the most twisted and horrible ways.

A very obscure suggestion here BUT, what about jeweller gem from illusion of time? (or Gaia for the us version) He seems like a support character by giving you stuff when you hand him gems but after he gets them all he reveals himself as the actual bad guy of the game & you fight him in a side quest brawl. You don't really get anything for it & afterwards you get sent back to Egypt where you encounter him for the last time.

The great thing about airy is that she's never portrayed as very nice. She's certainly helpful at times, and certainly one to push you onwards to "help" the crystals and she acts like a proper companion to the party - but she's very insistent on haste, she acts irritated whenever you slow down or go out of your way to help others, she's can sound very cold-hearted at times, and while you think this is all because she just so desperate to fulfil the main mission to "save the world", in reality it's because she's been through this countless goddamn times and just wants this to be over with. I really like that you can see her frustration slowly bubbling beneath the surface of her demeanour throughout the game.

Your #1 is mine as well. That first time I booted the game up and saw the subtitle change blew me outta my mfn boooooots. Amazing twist in a game whose whole gameplay loop is an amazing twist on turn based RPGs. Bravely Default is wasted as a 3DS exclusive, I wish it would have at least gotten a PC or Switch port, if not PS4 and X1. I still think it should get ported to this day! Truly underrated.

Huh, I thought you said this was a list of characters where it wasn't a significant plot twist when they turn out to be evil. During the 'first' run Airy is supposedly guiding you towards saving your world, and preventing the disaster that destroyed the MC's hometown from happening again. The fact she's actually the main villain is supposed to be a rather significant plot twist, though I do agree that it was very well done.

Weirdly the Heavenly Sword example has a near-identical counterpart in Final Fantasy XIII. There was this random white owl following you throughout the game. Nobody comments on it, and then it fuses with the antagonist to become the final boss.

I have no idea why that Navi comparison made me think of the old flash video called The Return of Ganondorf. The short of it is that Gannondorf for whatever reason becomes good and Link doesn't believe it and it just waiting for him to do something evil, which he doesn't, which drive Link crazy. Navi slaps link back to his senses at the end and tell Navi lets go fishing and as Navi flys he whats he says your next bait and starts laughing like a the new bad guy.

My favorite twist villains were Darth Treya from KOTOR II and Darth Revan from KOTOR. I don't know if anyone would consider her a surprise twist or not but it was still a damn good twist even if you saw it coming. And yeah I know he wasn't an NPC but that was still damn surprising.

Revan is technically not a real Sith or an idealist as they are in modern Star Wars today, Revan was the case that "Fine call me evil if you must I will do as I must to save your arses from the real threat out there. Not Palpatine and his clone, not The Sith Empire and definitely not the other Empire either."

I was waiting for the nerdy bookworm sheep from The Wolf Among US to pop up. She's this weak jumpy sheep that's scared of her own shadow, feeding you information and being Wolf's secretary at times but slowly and subtly becomes more and more detached as the story goes on. Wow. I've watched a lot of vids about Vampire The Masquerade (never played) and this is actually the first time I've ever been spoilered on what is truly in the coffin. I started distrusting Airy in Bravely Default when she simply tells us 'well, just go to the crystals again!', even when the rest of the party had no idea what was going on. I did the crystals twice... and on the third run, I decided to see what would happen if I overcharged one of them. And... yeah, my suspicions about Airy being less-than-good were confirmed. (I found it peculiar, though, that it doesn't lead to the 'true ending' if you instigate the fight prematurely... you had to be her 'obedient lackeys' to the end of the countdown on her wings for that. To each their own, I guess.)

in Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, this random old explorer guy you keep meeting over the course of the game turns out to be the final boss. There's even a great bit where he takes off his goggles and he's just got darkness where his eyes should be.
