I"m 9 hours in, with 5 characters unlocked (Olberic, Primrose, Alfyn, Therion and H'annit), and I'm truly loving it. The characters are really relatable, and the game makes you care about them quickly, and not just the playable ones either. The combat is fun and addictive, it can get grindy at some point, but at least it helps to level up really fast. Overall, I think the game is excellent, and I can't wait to find what it has in store for me.
@skins4thewin Жыл бұрын
It's only grindy if you try to play thru a character's full story, but that's not really how it's intended to be played. You're supposed to go thru each character's Chapter 1, then each's Chapter 2, etc etc. Means you'll basically level up a lot as you go and should never really need to grind.

@@blackjacka.5097 Pretty much, am I wrong? CHRISTIAN R. If they enjoy the battle system, then usually. Also I never had an issue with grinding in a JRPG. I think some just lack strategic thinking and just wanna smack everything to 0HP with an high damage attack. Which is a bad strategy to begin with XD Also what I played so far in Octopath Traveler, I never needed to grind, just make use of the Break and Boost Point System, buffs and debuffs and you will overcome it.
@cqllel51866 жыл бұрын
I like grinding in games. As long as it don't take too long or become too repetitive after a long while
@OnionKnightRises6 жыл бұрын
That's not a very fair comparison. It's literally set in the rules that you have to dribble the ball, but there's no guideline for what a JRPG should be. If a JRPG came out that did not require grinding people wouldn't suddenly not call it a JRPG, nor would they claim it was any worse for not having it. Games evolve, so it's not unreasonable to expect JRPGs to do better when it comes to their leveling system. I don't necessarily agree with the people that constantly complain about grinding, but the people that defend grinding are too complacent. There's a reason why the JRPG and MMORPG genre have been on a heavy decline compared to the 90s and 2000s, grinding has become excessive.

Grinding in games is fun if the battle system is fun. It makes sense that if you have to do something fun over and over again, it wont be too bad. Having something to work towards In each battle helps a lot too. In tales of the abyss for example, you could level up your skills by using then a bunch and unlock special skills if you use each one enough times. This means when you're grinding you'll usually be trying a ton of different skills and getting used to them all. Totally dont mind grinding that game.

Here's a few tips for beginners because this review doesn't inform you of some of the more obvious pitfalls and just how deep this game can get. - *Be picky when choosing your main character* : You cannot change your main character until Chapter 4 of their particular story, which is actually insanely late in the game. Pick someone you think you'll like story-wise since it's pretty easy to compensate for any shortcomings later on. - *Get all of the characters to start off with* : The game scales with the number of characters in your roster, and the sooner you fill it up, the sooner you can run into larger groups of enemies that make it easier to level. This is also the best way to choose who you want to have in your main party and who you'll take with you up to Chapter 4. - *Get the secondary classes early* : Each character has a region, and when you walk into that region's "Chapter 2 zone" you will conveniently see a new mark on the map. These are shrines that grant access to secondary classes that will allow you to make up for your party's shortcomings as well as get free stat boosts. It's highly recommended that you grab all of these before doing a Chapter 2 mission so that you can be well prepared for the increased challenge. - *Run only when battles are moot* : It's extremely important that you don't look a gift horse in the mouth when you're walking through environments your level. Granted, once it gets to the point where you can easily win without losing resources or trying to hit their weakness, you should probably be running away in order to save time. - *You can teleport to Towns from anywhere* : This is a big one that will save you a lot of time during side quests. You can teleport by bringing up the World map and clicking on a town you've been to before. This is why it's a good idea to get all of the second classes early, because then you can also stop in at the new town so you can teleport to it. - *Don't try to level/gear everyone up at the same* : Trust me when I say it's a losing battle, and you will benefit more from speed leveling the benched party members once you complete Chapter 4 and give them all of the swag gear. This also keeps the game interesting as it cuts down on grinding and will make it so that your main character isn't over-leveled for the climax.

I normally don't play JRPGs, but I was hooked by this and I can't stop playing. I'm already 17 hours in (20 if you count the 3 hours from the demo), and it seems to just keep getting better. The battle system is a lot of fun to figure out, and it reminds me of the strategy of Child of Light's timed combat. The story is well told; I only wish there wasn't such a grind between chapters, but I understand that is usually a big part of these JRPGs.

Nathon Potter so you think this game, because of its visual style, is worth less than The Order 1886, a super graphically intense game that lasts you about 10 hours for completion? That mindset is what plagues the industry with more and more hollow cinematic experiences that have very little to offer from a gameplay perspective or multiplayer only games that have no single player or storytelling at all. This game has a really solid single player campaign, 8 stories that you can play as you desire, extremely solid gameplay and, believe it or not, it is very much loved by its visuals because it shows how retro based games can evolve while retaining their retro essence. You say it's a 2D game, but that goes to show how little attention you've paid to the scenery, which is fully 3D and gorgeously detailed. To say that this is "just" a 2D game is an understatement and one that goes to show you just don't care about the game... And to be honest, you don't have to if you don't like RPGs. But this is a treasure trove for any RPG fan.

If you're new to JRPGs this is a good one to try but just do some research and get an idea of what you're getting into. SquareEnix put out a demo so I would recommend trying it first just to get a feel for the game before buying. I love that demos are making a comeback! Side note & nostalgia moment: I became a fan of CRPGs because of a PC Gamer magazine demo disk. Just a few minutes of Baldur's Gate was all I needed to know I loved it. The same was true with Octopath Traveler. I started with Primrose myself, I like dancing in real life and bard/support type characters so she fit my bill. Also I love that her color is red ;)

Jaziel Perez-Rivera I'd recommend starting with Pokemon, because it's easier and fun.

@Zealant3 жыл бұрын
@@ferretrevelvent6793 It's dozens of hours of grinding with almost nothing else in that amount of time. If you like spending the majority of the game grinding before anything happens, fine, but that's not how it's marketed.

I agree, it is really refreshing and fun, grindy yes but fun. I’ve always never understood why they want to change something that’s not broken. Turn based is still king in my eyes!

I genuinely did I don't know why you would think that they just wernt good games in my opinion (although Mario odessy wasn't a good game at all) I'm currently playing hollowknight which is great and am really looking forward to the release of dark souls which I have never played before. I don't hate the switch I just dislike it's lack of great games compared to other platforms and i hate how people always give Nintendo 10/10 without even thinking about it.

I actually have to say that I'm not a huge JRPG fan but for some reason I love this game so far. I think how they did the demo was genius!! Let you play and decide to delete it if you didn't like it or bring your save file with you if you do is a great way to sell a game IMO.

Same. I feel there are similar in a way that they are golden RPGs with improved designs from iconic previous games (Octopath took design from FFVI/Terranigma, Golden Sun took it from Shining Force 3). Considering returning to Golden Sun 2 cause I never finished it 🙊

I absolutely love the game! Awesome story, great OST all around, fantastic non-linear story progression, job system is FFT inspired and the synergy once you get the secondary and advanced jobs is flawless, 9.5/10 for my personal score. My only gripe is how you need to do a little grinding just to have your more non-active characters (ie your team B) catch up on levels because they don't share the exp along with your active party. And yes! I totally agree with the traditional Squaresoft feeling (not SE).

Just finished this game tonight and man what a great game. Well worth the different stories and combat system. The way Travel Banter was a nice way to connect the characters a bit more. Would've liked real cutscenes where they talk, but didn't mind Travel Banter as a way to make up for that. Also loved each of their stories even if half of them had wonky wavering quality.

As a former big fan of gameranx I feel somewhat obliged to help spread this information about their extremely unethical tendency of plagiarizing videos made by smaller channels. Below I have liked two reddit posts by people who have had this happen to their videos. Please read over their posts and decide for yourselves what to do with the information. The most recent one: www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/913umz/gameranx_made_an_article_out_of_my_video_with/ The one that made me unsubscribe: www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/7oo1so/gameranx_basically_stole_my_video/ To the folks at Gameranx, I really enjoy the content that you make and the community you try to foster, but can not endorse unethical journalistic practices like this. I understand it is difficult to maintain high quality content on a daily upload schedule, but you can at least sight your sources and give the people who put in the work the exposure they deserve. I hope this doesn't fall on deaf ears.

I’m someone who likes RPGs but doesn’t like turn-based battle systems. Never did. I did play the old school Final Fantasies and I did enjoy them but what I enjoyed about them was the story and the soundtrack not the combat. Because of its classic look I gave the Octopath demo a try and I enjoyed it far more than I thought I was going to. I never thought I would hear myself say that I’m enjoying a turn-based RPG but I actually am. Something about the way Octopath does it is so damn enjoyable. It doesn’t feel tedious like the old school Final Fantasies sometimes felt. It actually feels fun and rewarding. The game is so fun and so beautiful and the music is great as well. I admit I have a habit of not finishing my RPGs but this is one I’m going to make an effort to finish. I’m 10 hours in so far and I’m loving every minute. When I’m at work all I can think about is going home and playing Octopath Traveler.

I like the game overall. I started playing as H'aanit. The only repeatability in the game is changing your protagonist. Since you have to always have your protagonist in your party it forces you to level up your other party members. Since there is tons of things to buy, I may try playing as Tressa the merchant, just so I can buy everything in the game... I'm about 25+ hrs into it right now and I just started Chapter 2.. I like the transition in music from Chaper 1 to Chapter 2.. Definitely do a few mid-level dungeons before doing Chapter 2!!

If you like rpgs where you play through different character stories, play Live A Live on the SNES. You go through different time periods, and the characters intertwine fates at points.

J-Squeezy I sorry but that I can’t agree with. You may have not felt the same thing I have but the story in god of war was fantastic. The bonds Kratos and Atreus share are as strong as steel and really hits me in the heart. Game was fun with the skill tree, and other fighting mechanics. Horizon was good. But I don’t think it comes close to this game
@MrLinkDeity6 жыл бұрын
Finalhour10 Kratos was an ass for most of the game & barely showed any affection as a father, cheesy boss fights, generic action-adventure game. Horizon was much better. don’t have to agree with it. It’s not the game of the generation as people believe, I had more fun with other PS4 games this year. Plus Red Dead Redemption will wipe GoW off the map, just like it did in 2010.
