I loved the fact that Rockstar made the journal where Arthur could draw well, but John couldn't. Kind of like with John closing one eye when aiming it implies Arthur has just had more practice. I've never played a game where I felt more immersed than I did in rdr2.

The Witcher 3 didn't have me nearly as immersed and im a huge rpg fan, i mean rdr2 was a masterpiece in not only storytelling but its gameplay and immersion, while sure alot of horse riding especially in the beginning the Witcher 3 does start to feel a bit fetch questy, that's really not even a knock its a fantastic game but rdr2 I literally could play for hours while even great rpgs fighting can get old after a long session

My favourite tiny detail is when they give the main character, in a game with 3rd person perspective, details that differ in their walking/running speed. Or, in their walking/running on different surfaces or inclines

That's one of the reasons why I love RDR2. So much detail in everything. Like, if you walk on a flat surface, Arthur walks normally, but if you walk up a hill Arthur looks like he's getting exhausted doing it, it really looks like he's struggling to walk up it.

I think one of my favorite micro details is the sound design of footsteps. Probably in anything but a stealth game/section it's completely pointless but I absolutely love when you can instantly believe your character is walking is on a wood floor verses the ground, mud or the grass. It's such a minor thing in most games but sound design is so important for immersion and footsteps, least for me, go a loong way towards that.

Something I adore in Fallout: New Vegas, and they had zero reason to add this: special dialogue if you couldn't pass a skill/speech check. Seeing the difference between someone at Speech 50 sounding like a professional diplomat and 49 sounding like a caveman was always hilarious. In a similar vein, having occasional "dumb" dialogue options if your character had a low enough intelligence; i.e. when a robot guard asks for a passcode, and if your INT is low enough, you can respond "ICE CREAM!" There wasn't any real mechanical purpose to put those in, but they make the game and your character feel all the more immersive and real.

I was just playing BOTW earlier today and got caught in a thunderstorm in Torin Wetland at night. One detail I like about BOTW is the different sounds your equipment does. A sword banging on your metallic armor sounds different from your more fabric armor. Or that if you're wearing an armor more for stealth, it actually sounds quieter than a normal armor.
@MmntechCa

I was replaying BOTW recently when I noticed that groups of Bokoblins and Moblins will have conversations with each other if you sit and observe them for a while. You'll see them turn to the other and there's a speech animation, and they'll go back and forth like this for a bit before jumping up and down like someone told a great joke. Sure, a lot of other games have enemy NPCs talk to each other. But this is not something most players notice in a game like this. Especially given these are supposed to be mindless monsters. I have a lot of issues with BOTW's mechanics, but I have to give them credit for attention to detail. Yakuza 0 is another one that does something similar. For example, you'll see NPCs approach a vending machine, then ponder their choice before making a selection. There's a whole bunch of sequences like that. Really makes Kamurocho feel more immersive. Yet for some reason, a lot of those little touches were dropped in the later Dragon Engine games. People in the new games just mostly walk around and look at their phones. Oh, well... I guess that is pretty realistic.

MY TIME HAS COME OK here’s a list of a bunch of small details in botw!!! -the rito village music will slightly change depending on how many side quests you’ve completed and whether or not kass is there -link’s body temperature is ever so slightly cooler when standing in the shade and ever so slightly warmer when in the sun -if you leave the game idle while link is shirtless, he’ll flex! -similarly, if you leave the game idle and (in game) it’s late at night link will fall asleep before quickly jolting himself awake -if you kick a chest open with no shoes on, link grabs his foot and hops around in pain -you can catch bokoblins hunting animals in the wild -if you throw a boomerang at a lizalfos (their weapon of choice) they’ll just catch it -each monk in each shrine is posed differently -there are different animations for eating skewers, drinking elixirs, eating meals and manually using fairies -when your quiver is empty, link’s stance will change slightly and firing the bow will only give you a small strumming noise edit: adding more details !! -on certain nights in the hebra mountains you can see the aurora borealis! -walking around naked and talking to NPCs will generate interesting and different dialogue options! (i recommend getting nakey and talking to paya in kakariko village, her reaction is *chefs kiss*) -the temple of time music is actually just the temple of time music from ocarina of time slowed down -similarly, the stable theme has epona's song as a leitmotif -each of the staircases in rito village has a different amount of feathers depending on what floor/story you're on -wearing a fire weapon in a cold area will raise your body temperature and vise versa -you can ride bears, deer, and even lynels (for a short amount of time lmao) -if you whistle near a school of fish, they'll beach themselves, which is an actual fear reaction in fish -additionally, at around 8pm ingame time, if you're standing at hebra peak, it'll stop snowing and clear up momentarily. if you listen closely, the music will actually become more "clear" too, you can hear more of the flute! it's so beautiful

My favorite discovery in BotW is wearing an enemy mask, dropping some food they like on the ground and sneak striking them as they chow down. Apparently, the high tier enemies require better food to be interested as oppose to something like a red bokoblin with lower standards.

Arkham Origins was the first game I noticed snow deformations, and they mattered because you could see the path that NPCs were following while guarding a rooftop or something. One detail that I always look for in games is in the cut scenes, if my character is holding a certain weapon when the cut scene begins, I expect my character to be holding that weapon during the cut scene and to still have that weapon after the cut scene. Unless they show the character putting the weapon down or holstering it; or the game goes to a different time in the story. That's one thing that used to piss me off in the Gears series. It's very satisfying when developers get it right. I've been noticing it being done correctly so far in the Halo Infinite campaign. 🤞🏽

#3 - I’m sure it has been mentioned, but Shenmue was the first game I remember having an interactive journal… and, though kind of dull and boring, it was a necessary companion to the game if ever you set down the controller for a week and then wanted to get back into the groove. Unless you had a player’s guide or reliable internet source at the time, the journal was your only hope for remembering where you are in the storyline and where to go next. I found it fascinating as a young gamer, and it’s only just a small part of the charm of that game that left me with such a fond memory of my first complete play through. Though many interactive journals are much more extensive and thorough in current titles, nothing will top the feeling of Ryo’s journal.

There is a small detail I love in games that makes a huge impact in the immersion, when you stop at a store or a window or even the trash in the street and you see bottles and bags with made up brand names for sodas, chips, gum and other products instead of just a red or green bottle or can. Those little details improve the experience.

The Mario button in Luigi's Mansion was actually made to remind the player why they're in this haunted mansion. The goal was only brought up at the beginning of the game so the devs thought they should add it as a reminder.

In the South Park rpgs there are some truly amazing 4th wall breaks you never see coming. Like Cartman showing up dressed as Patriots coach Bellichick and call you a cheater if you input a code early in the game that you aren't supposed to know yet. Or my personal fave, in the Fractured but Whole, if you try to skip the opening cinematic Cartman will at first ask you not to, since you would miss out on story details, but gets increasingly annoyed if you insist. Until he gets fed up and actually sends you straight to the credits roll, since you obviously don't care about the story of the game. And btw, if you try to skip the opening with a clear game file Cartman will acknowledge the fact you've already finished the game and let you do it without consequences.

About NPC's and their reactions to the player... There is one game series that I really love to pieces because of the NPC's (and there are LOTS of them) have their own little story development throughout the game. These are the Trails games from Nihom Falcom. Those NPC's not only develop their own story throughout a single game (every time you meet them after some small main story development their story also has advanced), but even throughout several games in those series. And, as said, I am not talking about a only a few NPC's here. The trails games span about 9 games in a row (Trails in the Sky 1, 2, 3th, Trails from Zero, Trails to Azure, Trails of Cold Steel I, II, III, IV), and you can still meet characters in the last game that where present in the first game. Talking about commitment and world building...

One thing I always get way too excited about is when it's raining in a game, and you go under an awning or some other 'not directly indoors' cover and the rain doesn't come through the roof as though it's not there. In Far Cry 6, the first time it started raining I looked for cover, and was elated that I wasn't getting rained on while standing beneath some stairs. It doesn't matter if your character gets soaked, but it feels good when an umbrella actually works.

Another thing I really appreciated about HZD's Frozen Wilds DLC, is that when performing a roll, you can see that there's grass underneath it. Which isn't just a step up from the main game, but it's something that happens in reality. And that's honestly a pretty cool attention to detail!

Most games usually shift to the default weapon during cutscenes so I like that halo infinite was able to model every weapon into the cutscenes
@Evravon

On the "guns working realistically" note, I am very surprised you guys didn't mention Escape from Tarkov. You have to manually load each round into your magazine, and reloading your weapon in the field without emptying your full magazine first means you have several magazines in your inventory that are like half full, or 1/4 full. So eventually, you have to hide, unload all those partially filled magazines and load the rounds into new magazines so you have some complete mags.

Ah, yes, as far as japanese media and making food look good, there's actually an interesting story behind it. Back in the early 2000s, there was an anime with a cooking scene where characters had to chop a head of lettuce, but originally it just looked like a green ball and the animation was crap. Then there was fan backlash and they became the laughing stock for how bad their lettuce looked. When the released it to dvd, they reanimated the entire cooking scene with a better head of lettuce. And ever since then, everyone in the anime and game industries in japan try really hard to make the food look good.

The Snow effects in Last of Us 2 to NOT look realistic at all. I do not know what the hell you think snow looks like. Snow is a powder that only compress if you step on it. If you brush it with your feet while stepping. It does not leave a even trail of compressed snow like your foot is some type of powerwasher. If you are walking in a foot of snow. You are slow and take long steps. It doesn't look like an ant army just went through. I hate it when people give games more credit then they deserve and Last of us 2 is the king of that
