@Stonkis Bonkis Yeah, it's just his weird head cannon, there isn't even a popular fan theory about her being the villain. Also, it's pretty solidly confirmed her powers are opening gates in space and time, given how you encounter songs from the 1940s in the 1920s setting. Finally she's spent her entire life trapped, and had others using her for her power, (primarily your character) so it's kinda the video game equivalent of victim blaming to try and see her as the villain. Her actions are somewhere between heroism and self defense.

I just remembered a Terraria theory i read on Reddit where you are actually the bad guy for killing Wall of Flesh and releasing the spirits that were being held back by the spell made by the Lunatic Cultist or the WOF itself. The Cultist boss just before you spawn the pillars makes alot of sense too because they're just trying to keep back Moon Lord from killing everything. This us just a theory though and as far as I know there is no canon lore for Terraria.

But you do end up defeating moonlord so you could end up being the good guy at the end
@jokeofacity67172 жыл бұрын
I feel like I also have read that same theory, but I think that's actually part of the calamity mod lore. In vanilla, the cultist were actually trying to summon Moon Lord back to his realm. Probably that's why we fight Moon Lord in his broken state; he hasn't fully recovered yet.

2:38 Revan wasnt exactly the bad guy. The only reason he turned to the dark side was because he met the Sith Emperor Vitiate in Unknown Space and knew that the Republic was currently unable to match Vitiate's Sith Empire, so he came back to try to make the Republic stronger by conquering it and turning it into an EMpire
@MikaeruDaiTenshi Жыл бұрын
I also argue that the this game doesn't deserve to be on that list, mainly because you don't "end up" being the bad guy, but you "WERE" the bad guy. Though, you still can be the bad guy by taking the dark side path, but that doesn't count, because then you're bad the whole game. About Darth Revan not being the bad guy, that's argueable, or let's say, a matter of perspective. I'd even argue that most Jedi are bad guys, because they force their rules on you, and don't allow emotions because they "can" lead to evil. In fact, it's their reaction to emotions that leads to evil, not the emotions themselves. Well, maybe except anger and such, mostly because they're 1. treated wrong, and 2. literally feared by the council. the irony is, fear is also an emotion that "leads" to the dark side.
@Calekoflight Жыл бұрын
That seems to be a big recurring plot trope in Star Wars. In the old Legends continuity, Big Papa Palpatine saw some greater outside threat that would destroy the Republic if it was left in it's current state. Yea, Papa Palps was evil as hell but the Republic was a stagnant mess of bureaucracy and corporate greed.

Honestly I’d go with the game Nefarious I mean, it’s literally the plot, you’re the bad guy trying to capture all the princesses. Even if you change your mind in the good end and stop your evil secretary from using your evil plan to take over the world, you’re still the bad guy kidnapping princesses, one of which you kidnap far too often for her to become hilariously used to it and even consider you a friend of hers. Plus, the bad ending was also memorable because it basically the depicted the outcome of the main character’s motives, like taking over the world, the princesses are sealed in crystals, you’re the worlds scummiest villain.

I think the Spec Ops: The Line twist would have had a lot more impact if there were hidden choices that allow the player not to do all the evil things and figure out alternative solutions. If the game forces you to do all these things to progress in the story with the only alternative being to quit playing the game and then tells you to feel bad about it it doesn't really work (for me at least).
@vinikampferherzbarros27 Жыл бұрын
But that's the point of the game: there are NO good choices in war. You create an illusion of being a hero but in truth you are only killing.
@liamnehren10542 жыл бұрын
I thought the point with Braid was that time powers literally destroyed their relationship and made him out as a creep. I never bothered finishing the game as the ending was spoiled to me but early on the main character's memories state as much, suggesting that continued use of his powers whittled away at whatever relationship they originally had until she didn't know him. kind of like how Bill Murray at the end of groundhog day knows everything about everyone in that small town and if he handled it at all in the wrong way he would come off as a total stalker for knowing so much. Edit: In fact the true ending as the fandom page puts it is that the princess explodes when Tim touches her, something he is unaware of during the game, he then reverses time and the false ending of the knight taking her away is the only option. Suggesting he didn't want them all to die and probably didn't know it would happen. In this ending it is kind of suggested that the princess knew that it would happen? probably a reference to time paradoxes destroying the world. If he in fact reversed time in an effort to save her from the monster bosses seen in the game, saving her would create a paradox of causality as people understand it erroneously. (if I remember correctly it would just create a secondary universe where Tim killed them and she was unharmed) Imagine that he tried to save her from a trauma before they met which was when the bosses say marred her features or something else horrible and so he deleted their relationship and couldn't accept that he kept coming off as a freak when he tried to rebuild it without the natural progression of events or even changes to her personality caused by the trauma. That could explain her running away even if she didn't know about the paradox and still paint Tim in a good, if tragic light.

One game I'd like to give an honorable mention is No Straight Roads. In that game, you play as Mayday and Zuke, who are trying to fight for their right to play rock and roll professionally rather than converting to EDM like the other top stars of Vinyl City. However, they go to increasingly drastic lengths to not just do that but to dismantle the system that banned Rock in the first place, all without a plan and all the while leaving the city chaotic and lawless in their wake. The two don't become self aware of this until the final battle, when they're on the precipice of accomplishing everything they dreamed of, and only then do they undo their mistakes and try diplomacy instead.

Only western version of Nier has you playing as the dad; the Japanese and remake is the brother's perspective.
@HaohmaruHL3 жыл бұрын
That’s because of cultural differences people in the us don’t vibe with brother sister relationships like at all due to individualistic competitive nature of the western countries and instead they vibe with father son or father daughter. There are tons of other western movies and video games which exploit this father child dynamics to build a story. Those actually don’t work in Japan. In Japan sibling relationships are considered more sacred bond. Take any anime for example, there’s always brother sister plot device.

The first game that ever caught me off guard with the main character being a villain was a JRPG for the GameCube called Baten Kaitos. You control the main character of Kalos (you, the player, are the role of his guardian spirit, and so he talks to you) and you basically trust Kalos completely, and then you get slammed in the face when it turns out he's working with the bad guys and manipulating you to gain power.

Yes, and Marche really is the villain, he clearly doesn't know what escapism means, because the fantasy world is as real as the "real world" it's just a matter of choice between two realities, who can blame them that they want to stay in the better world. Imagine you would have a chance, for example using a stargate to live in a paradise on a different planet that has everything you need. Both places are eral, but one is polluted, corupted, overpopulated and generally unpleasant and the other is the world of your dreams.

Warcraft III should get an honorable mention. At the time of its launch, not everyone knows that Arthas eventually turns into the bad guy unless they actually play the game (because, the internet was still a baby and new and stuff), but it took a while for the word to spread, and then Wrath of the Lich King was released, and now everyone knows who he is.

Assassin's Creed III starts off by casting you as someone who is apparently an assassin sent to Colonial America to do assassin things before you get through the first act and find out you've actually been playing as the head Templar- you know, the faction that has consistently been depicted as the bad guys- and then you have to spend the rest of the game trying to undo everything you did in the first act. It was a pretty well-executed twist, but it might have had more impact if Connor wasn't so dull a character.
