One of the first ones: the difficulty curve in Space Invaders is a glitch. The developer had originally intended for the enemy ships to move at the same rate through out the game. But he put so much stuff on the screen that the internal processor couldn't move everything at the rate he wanted, so it ended up moving slower at first, then when more enemy ship were destroyed, they started moving faster.

It's such a cool piece of gaming history, and a fine example of a limitation creating a core element of game design itself: the difficulty progression curve.

I don't know if this counts, but in Dishonored 2, a playtester discovered an unintended power combo, when they had to go through a room with 2 guards while being low on health. To avouid risking their own life, they created a duplicate of themselves, then used the Domino power to tie it's faith to the 2 guards. Then the player attacked the friendly duplicate, killing it, and by extention, the guards as well. Appearently the devs didn't plan on this and it was just a side effect of the duplicate registering as an NPC that can be targeted wih powers.

If I recall correctly the Ghandi one was because of an underflow: since he had the lowest aggressiveness value, the game tried to lower it even further and would underflow into the maximum aggressiveness number, it's hilarious.

While in developement for Alan Wake, Sam Lake, the writer, was being shown a demo of how the enemy types will attack and was being shown around the map when a physical glitch caused a box to spasm out of control and take off into the air, Sam Lake saw that and thought that's pretty scary and cool so he immediately asked if they can do that intentionally to any object and apply gameplay elements to it, and they could, so that's how we got the poltergeist objects as important enemies and even a couple of bossfights in Alan Wake.

Funny story one what happened there; Gandhi was set to the lowest possible aggression level in the game. I think 0 or 1... One political system - I think democracy? - lowers your aggression by 1. You can't have negative aggression...so it integer underflowed to the max number. Oops...

@@Gulyus Actually the Democracy lowers the Aggression by 2. Thus not being able to display negative numbers, the Aggression jumps to the highest possible number which in that case is 255. This mistake is especially ironic due to the fact that this entire video is essentially ranking developer's mistakes throughout the years that were then turned into features, where it seems Gameranx themselves just made a mistake that will no doubt turn into an inside joke among fellow Trekkies that watch this video and understand their hilarious misstep of adding this picture when they edited the video. Clearly no revisions were done, unless they did it on purpose...🤔hmmm....... As pointed out by @Ratus ***************************************** Disclaimer: Since GameRanx was too busy putting this incredible video together to add the timestamps, I figured I would pitch in and do my part by adding the time stamps(as I often do). Some further trivia: A mistake about one of the mistakes, the Konami code, is that some people think it ends in Start, or Select Start. What's caused the confusion is that in a lot of games you have to press Start to begin the game after entering the code, so people assumed that it must be part of the code. In some games you have to press Select to enable two-player mode, then press Start to begin, so for the same reason, some people think the code ends in Select Start.

I can see why a programmer would write that. Some times you do want it to fail in a certain way so there is a correct and in correct way to fail. Mostly it is to indicate that your exception to what happened worked so not so much used anymore besides for in debugging. It will also make an event log event into the correct event log part. Event logs aren't that useful for debugging if you have sight into the build error code screen.

Seems like someone hasn't heard about the magnificent bug ridden game named "GunZ: The Dual". That game was full of animation cancel tricks. You could cancel defensive, offensive and movement animations and string them together to perform many unintended moves. The player-base found out about this and the developers embraced this.

Info on the Gandhi bomb. Basically it was an aggression parameter on accident where Gandhi was set at the lowest aggression, but civilizations that took the democratic lifestyle would have a lowered aggression parameter. Normal civs would generally have an aggression parameter of somewhere between 1 and like 40 or 50, the lowest number being 1, the highest being (get this) something like 380. Gandhi being a pacifist, they gave him a parameter of 1, but the aggression system has no negatives, so when Gandhi took democratic system of government, normally lowering aggression, it simply jumped to 380 aggression, making Gandhi suddenly the most violent war monger to ever exist in civilization. The fans and game creators thought it was so hilarious that it became a feature in future games

*More fun facts on #9* : Most arcade cabinets have a button combination so that devs could go into certain levels, or give themselves invincibility to test out certain physics etc. These button combinations can get super nutty, and it even took till a couple years ago for people to discover the combination for Mortal Kombat 2 and UMK3, especially considering it used the block buttons for BOTH Player 1 and Player 2 in this sequence: P1 (5), P2 (10), P1 (2), P2 (8), P1 (2) There's even a hidden Galliga minigame in the MK2 menu!

You kinda missed the point with the "coptering" part from Warframe. How coptering actually worked is that you would jump, look upward, then attack, and that would launch you through the air. If you modded your weapon to have high attack speed, you could launch yourself across some of the largest maps at the time. What you show in the video is a far cry from what actual coptering was, which is why bullet jumping, while a great addition to the game, is still no substitute for coptering.

Let me add my input here: 1 - Devil May Cry 3/4/5 The characters have an ability called Enemy Step which allows them to jump on their enemies during airborne. This allowed the characters to refresh most if not all airborne abilities like Dante's Aerial Rave or Sky Star. Japanese players like donguri990 or sakaki1224 would take advantage of this little glitch and made incredibly fast and stylish combos on enemies. 2 - GunZ The Duel If you thought Warframe's coptering was hard which needs simultaneous key executions, the entire game (GunZ) has character animation canceling just by switching weapons or blocking with melee weapons now widely known as "k-style" as I presume korean players are the ones that discovered this trick and basically the entire game involves with different key input sequences and even precise timing to execute weird yet stylish moves.

I like the foxes in Skyrim that lead you to treasure. They were programmed to run away from you. The way they did this was that the map was broken down into segments and the foxes would run a certain number of segments away from you (rather than a certain distance). But the segmentation wasn't homogeneous: dungeons and special interest locations were more densely segmented than wider open areas, which means that if a fox running away from you came near to a point of interest, the AI would push it towards the POI because it would quickly cross several segment boundaries there. Result: foxes unintentionally do lead you to treasure.

About the Gandhi glitch, the story goes as such; Civ 1 was weird; he actually wasn't ALWAYS violent. The way it worked was ; each leader had a number from 0 to 255 to determine their attributes; willing to trade, expansionism, etc, and of course aggresivity. So each leader had a FIXED base value, but that would be for each game ( example, 220 in colonialism for england -jk- ) but to make the game feel a bit less redundant, each new government would add or substract some values; democracy would add a -2 to aggressivity. Gandhi was ofc set to base 1 aggressivity. BUT there was a bug in there - that was actually the only value below a 2, so they didn't account for it when coding; so if the random modifier was a -2, he'd flip back all the way to the HIGHEST aggressivity value, because they didn't put negative numbers in the mix. Gotta love old games. Civ 1 is from 1991 btw and much uglier than anything shown in the vid ( civ 3 is the oldest one showcased ;) ) ( for those really interested, we will actually never know if this is true or not; the developping team either denies the fact or straight doesn't remember, but gandhi indeed could become a huge warmonger in Civ1 and was the only character to change that way; it might be from a bug happening in the code when creating multiple small cities though... we'll never really know )

I believe the slide hopping mechanic in Titanfall 2 was was an unintentional meta. It essentially allowed players to maintain maximum speed so long as they kept pressing the jump button followed immediately by the crouch button. They shot around like a bat outa hell and could cover an entire map in seconds. It made for some really intense gameplay 😂 Respawn never patched it because they saw how popular it was.

This was a physics bug and was later patched. The community got so upset with the bug being fixed that this was one of the MAJOR times that a fix was reverted due to players demanding a bug to remain in the game. Rockstar reverted the patch due to fan feedback mixed with how the bug wasn't very game breaking.

One of the coolest and in my opinion best additions to games is a bug that the devs end up liking and leaving in. Even something as simple as the tree jump in Dark Souls 3; where you use a tree to jump onto a roof and access an area without buying a ridiculously expensive key is something you'd think was a straight up purposeful part of the game. Which I kind of think that example truly might be. Idk if the devs every talked about it but considering the game they'd probably just leave us hanging.

Virtual-On: Operation Moon Gate (VOOMG) had this homing assist for melee attacks. If you got very close to your opponent and turned a little left or right, you would end up orbitting them, which would break guard attempts. The faster mechs, like Apharmd, could zip around 3 times before striking, and dashing away during this could give you the Gamera dash, where Apharmd spins like, well, Gamera. They harnessed this in Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram (VOOT) to allow for a simple back attack. Not quite as fun, but still useful. Sorry for the late but this video is new to me!

Gandhi's aggression wasn't just some fun little glitch. Gandhi started with aggression like all characters 1 to 10. Gandhi had a 1. The problem was that unlocking democracy dropped an AI's aggression by 2 points. You would think he would go to -1 or 9. But turns out the aggression system was on a scale of 1 to 256! So, Gandhi, had aggression of 255 versus the second-highest AI only capable of a 10. He literally threw the game just for the chance to even think of killing you.
