It's always surprising how little is actually needed. Every single time I need to apply thermal paste I get the strong instinct to put a bit more, because that tiny half-pea just doesn't seem even close to enough, and I get the feeling that it won't spread to the whole heatspreader. But I quiet that instinct and put just that very small amount, and what do you know, the next time I remove the heatsink, the entire heatspreader has indeed been covered by the paste. I was just confident in my visual memory to mount every part where it belongs. So at one point i removed the CPU cooler, and i was like; damn, that is a lot of "dirt" between that cooler and CPU. So i "cleaned" it! Only after a couple of years i accidentally found out that,THAT "dirt" was actually meant to be there and that it was thermal paste. People in the pc community are sticklers for everything. Thermal paste, cable management, how you ground yourself. Calm down it's not heart surgery. I had a guy blow up on me about grounding one time on youtube. The dude seriously built his computers in the kitchen grounded to the water pipes. Another time a guy went off on me for using Arctic Silver paste on my builds because it was "old school" and he said it wasn't good enough. Apparently he overclocked with LN2 Professionally and Arctic Silver was bad because he was a pro overclocker. I call BS.

So let me be one of those people. If you have some Arctic silver lying around, it is perfectly fine. I used up all my Arctic silver before I switched to the free Noctua paste that came with my cooler. If you are going to buy new paste, Arctic silver is not that good and also is electrically capacitive (don't let it seep off the IHS). It is also not that cheap and cheaper pastes have outperformed AS.
