That the Alien Hives figures don't have four arms is a bit of a WYSIWYG problem. As is the limited weapons options (at least on the Etsy store). But I do like that their models have a distinct style. A bit farther on the Dinosaur side of the Bug-Dinosaur spectrum that Tyranids occupy.

I've been looking at ordering some Alien Hives minis from there for a bit. I've calculated that I can get a functional 500 pt army for $60. My only reservation is that some of the comments on the Etsy store say some of the figures (the "Zoanthropes" and "Hive Guard" alikes) come out smaller than their GW equivalents. It's not a huge deal, since I only need to put them on correctly sized bases, but it is a concern.

A couple of years ago my youngest came back from school, full of beans about a great new game that I wouldn't know anything about that used loads of different dice. I could already feel myself getting emotional, anyway it was called Dungeons & Dragons. I had to try to explain that I found D&D when I was his age 100's of year ago in 1985 and told him he could have my old bag of dice. I've not played D&D since my early 20's and still had the dice I had as a 12/13 year old. Had a little handing over ceremony of the dice bag and he is now the custodian of my lucky black d20. I did tell him if he loses it I am writing him out of the will.....

So I love the video but you need to read the Material safety data sheet for whatever type of resin you're using most of them are fine to handle bare handed as long as you don't have sensitive skin but they can cause slight contact dermatitis, the is the main issue with most sla resins is that if they are ingested accidentally they become neurotoxic. Wearing gloves is good advice but primarily so you don't accidentally ingest the resin. You really also should wear full eye covering goggles when you're working with it because it can and has splashed in people's eyes and if it cures while in their eye it can permanently damage your vision.
@FacilityD203 жыл бұрын
This type was water washable, but still can burn you skin for sure. I have a pile of safety glasses around I will throw then in the facility too. Also if you are grinding or sanding resin mini wear a respirator because getting resin dust in your lungs is really bad.
@Nick_Whiskey2 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem with the OPR Alien Hives models, which I learned way too late since I bought the files before I had the printer (due to an STL sale), is that those models have NO options, and many of the 4 armed Tyranid species only have 2 arms on the OPR models. This makes it very hard to represent something that should be simple; like a Warrior using scythes and a deathspitter - the OPA Warrior can ONLY be modeled with EITHER two boneswords (the only melee option the model has, despite the army book allowing tons of options) OR a generic gun... and that kind of blows. You are already using a proxy.. and now it's a proxy for a proxy. And this extends to a large part of their old catalog - several Vinci armies (their "version" of a steampunk Cities of Sigmar army) are just missing their weapon options. Every single Sargeant model, in every single OPA army, only has a single weapon for their sculpt. It's a 2 steps forward (the cost decrease, the incredible detail of their models), 1 step back situation (complete lack of options).
@FacilityD202 жыл бұрын

The supports were all pre-suports from OPR, however I did manually add about a dozen mid supports to the mini to make sure it was anchored down well. I find my printer has a lot of vacuum force, and it just take me a few mins to add a few anchors vs failing a pint hours in.

I really dig the stuff OPR has been putting out this year since Beasts for Fantasy and Jackals for Sci-Fi. I also appreciate they got rid of the sculpts they considered to be not up to standard. I think they should have included the Bugs in that. They just don't hold up compared to the new stuff they have. They are ok, but I hope they get them into the re-work schedule ASAP as they are my favorite army. Papsikle is too "Aliens" and Puppet wars is ok but the theme seems off. There are a couple cults guys that make amazing stuff assuming they have not been taken down but one model is close to two months of OPR. Still worth it IMHO but it misses on the cheap.

Painting tip: try to add some small details with a color complementary to your main palette, in this case it would have been cool some redish details, like the toungue or eyes. Also Yu are too heavy with washes, especially on the carapace, instead of all those washes why you doi not simply start from a darker base, then do only one wash with nuln oil?

Great Vid. a big problem in the 3d printing world is when people generically put 3d printed models under the umbrella of "Warhammer rip offs" - some models *are* blatant rip offs and GW can most definitely claim copyright on them - but there are so many more model makers out there that make incredible models that you can use for a multitude of game systems - and they deserve so more credit than just saying they are making fake Warhammer. 3D printing has moved well beyond just making mini's for Warhammer. These models are a great example of that.

You do it all it seems, and you have such patience with little one! Subbed because of wholesomeness as well as all I am learning. If you could, help explain why you did so many washes? Wouldn't doing one over the other make the previous one ineffective? And what about the coat of paint after and then two more "washes"? I don't quite understand the why behind it, which may help me understand when/if I'd do the same. Anyways, thanks for the great content! I'm not worried about watching your vids when my kiddos are around!

Thank you for the kinds words. The two washes was used to darken down the overall color of the shell (Green then black) so that the green just show through a little bit. The skin was washed with sepia then drybrushed with a flesh/bone color to lighted it back up so to only leave the wash in the crevasses of the model. This was a theme I started years ago, and now I have to keep doing it this way in order for all the minis to match in the army.

Here's a hot tip for you, instead of IPA use methylated spirits. You can get a massive jug of it for a fraction of the price of IPA from most hardware stores. It's toxic so you'll want to keep wearing your gloves and eye protection, but I find it much more affordable and available than IPA (at least here in ON) and it works just as well.

I have heard many great things about Elegoo Mars to the point that I would buy in. The resin cost is calculated in the slicer program, so the printer dosen't matter in terms of that. All you need to do is add thr cost per L of the resin in the program.

It depends on your budget of course. A resin printer for minis for sure, I would also recommend a wash and cure as well. FDM for terrain 100% like dungeon tiles. Right now I think the anycubic Mono printers or the Elegoo Mars are amazing for the price.

Nice work! And bonus points for getting your little guy involved. I note that there are a few folks who bothered to comment, apparently in order to firmly cement the image of the stereotypical g0oSE StEPpiNg F@nB0y for GW. When one has to stoop to "you dont like to pay for GW stuff because youre poor"....it's easy to see why that particular segment of the fandom has to rely on random pickup games in stores. Well done, lads, keep building that toxic image. In any case, I liked the print and the paint job. Is the original Carnifex a great model? Yes, yes it is. One does not, however, have to be someone of lesser means to perhaps balk at the thought of giving anyone over $50 dollars for it (unbuilt and unpainted no less). Keep printing and building stuff. Cheers! ***Edited to add: If you are a GW fan and you are not stepping like a certain waterfowl, then game on, and enjoy your day with my complements.***

Thank you. GW makes great looking minis sure. Also, there are a lot of great looking STL files out there to print too. There comes a point when spending 2 grand on an army is just not a smart move, especially when you are into many other hobbies and games. Can I afford the carnifex brood at $110... sure, can I print 36 of them for that cost... sure can. If you wanted to find a basically exact copy of that mini to print then just google it, but I wanted to show another company, making great stuff that is close but not straight IP coping...

Gameswork shops 10 woman squad cost 54 pounds. so with one squad and I am already saving money. I will get far more than 10 sisters from 1 liter :) I believe that once I have my 2000 point army printed I will have covered the cost of the printer , files and resin and then some.
