I lovingly converted and customized my Guard regiment, the 275th Highlanders. For example, they got increasingly bigger hats depending on seniority. Conscripts get no hat, regular troops get Balmoral hats, and veteran troops get bearskins. I am bloody proud of my army, how it's converted, painted, organized. The last couple of years, GW made conscripts obsolete, veterans obsolete, now infantry squads that have there since day 1, Yarrick, Straken, Harker, Creed, Kjell. No, I won't be using my conscripts or veterans as regular infantry. That's not the canon of my army. That's not how they're modelled. No, I won't be taking dedicated heavy weapon teams. I didn't before, I won't do it now. No, I won't be buying any Krieg. I don't collect Krieg, nor do I intend to. Where's the hobby that applauded and encouraged creativity and spectacular conversions? Where they were actually featured in White Dwarf? If GW doesn't want me to use the models I already have, fine, I won't use them. But I won't be buying any new ones either.

Fantasy was the canary in the coal mine that most 40k fans were all too happy to ignore. GW was content to simply axe the IP that literally built them - along with any fans of it-, so why on God's green earth would anyone expect them to treat any of their other IPs or fan bases with a single ounce of respect. When Fantasy died, Warhammer (along with every other GW IP) became little more than a disposable product, void of any legacy or meaning outside of a quarterly earnings report.

So I've been a fan of 40K for awhile, but a fan through the stories, books and lore. I've only recently got into the tabletop game back in June of last year. I'll say that I've enjoyed the game for the most part and I got the hang of it real quick! But, I can't say that I'm satisfied with the game. I went into the game thinking that there would be rules for all of the different sub-factions in 40K, which there are rules, but no where near the depth that I thought it would be. I play Iron Warriors, weakness is a choice, and going into 10th ed I thought the IWs detachment was going to be artillery and gun focused, but nah, we're just tanky. And as a new player I asked, "Is that it?". I played in an escalation league with my army and with that detachment, I had fun, but it just wasn't what I was looking for. I wanted my battles to tell a story and not to be "just a game". I thought the rules would be built for that, but nah. However, I learned about CRUSADE! And I've been working on setting up a crusade all the way back into September. And while I've been looking for unique missions, upgrades, etc, I looked into 9th ed. I found the IWs rules and I was shocked. There's so much stuff! Missions! Relics! Agendas! I was saying to myself, "Why take all of this cool stuff out in 10th?!" So I, and my play group, have reached into the older editions to pull cool stuff into our crusade! We start our crusade in 10 days and I'll tell ya, I'm super pumped! Getting to do your own thing in a narrative is the best. To me, this is what 40k is all about.

I think it's pandering to the tournament players as they are the only ones buying all the rules and models to have the best armies. This update makes me angry. I am now going to type for several minutes on why this is a bad update. By narrowing down the possible ways to play Imperial Guard it creates a natural dislike for the three chosen factions among both Guard players who played different regiments, be they with actual models or simply by the rules. Now the Cadians, Catachans, and Death Korps aren't just the lucky factions GW love, they're also the reason you don't get rules let alone new models. Further, fans of the many many books about non Cadian, Catachan, and Death Korps regiments who may be thinking of making the Imperial Guard their next army of choice, will be put off by the lack of ability to not only play their heroes, but even to make an army similar to their heroes. So GW is failing to properly monetize fans of Gaunts Ghosts, Caiaphas Cain, or Grimaldus. By narrowing the regiments down to three broad categories, GW also weakens the identity of the Cadians, Catachans, and the Death Korps of Krieg by causing them to be spread rather thin on the tabletop. If the Cadians have to now represent themselves, Elysian Drop Troops, Jopallan Indentured, Armageddon Steel Legion, Harkoni Warhawks, Royal Volpone, Gudrunite Rifles, and Brimlock Dragoons, this weakens their identity as a faction of survivors rebuilding off of scraps to plant an Imperial flag up Zeke Abaddon's ass. If the Catachans now have to represent themselves, the Tanith First and Only, Armageddon Ork and now Daemon Hunters I Guess, Kanak Headtakers, Asgard Rangers, and Salvar Chemdogs, it weakens their identity as the toughest, near abhuman survivors of the nastiest deathworld in the Galaxy Crocodile Dundee Rambo Contra. If the Death Korps of Krieg have to now represent themselves, the Valhallan Ice Warriors, Mordian Iron Guard, Roane Deepers, Narminian Armoured, Fancho, Vitrian Dragoons, Maccabian Jannisaries, and the damn Praetorians, it sure as shit weakens their identity as post apocalyptic harshly disciplined soldiers with a religious determination to kill the Emperor's enemies and die trying, also they have mutant horses. If GW can stock and sell a dozen different types of Interecessor Marine, they can stock and sell multiple bucks of guardsmen. Heck they could even have accessory packs of lasrifles and stubcarbines to make Imperial Army troops. Try Again Bragg didn't die for this. They can filter new regiments through fucking Kill Team WHAT ARE THEY THINKING! I was working on a story with Valhallan Aersonais and ski troops, wonder which army style those would work under....NOT! Gav Thorpe is secretly Lijah Fething Cuu. Screw this, I'm going to Dark Future. I also have a copy of Xenos Rampant somewhere.

The Commander comparison is a little unfair I feel...Commander actually has choices and options available to the player.

I will be honest i am getting my GW minis from a local store Im not in it for the long run tho Already have a box of heirotek circle and immortals and im done with necrons, kitbashed the technomancer to get a regular cryptek, the canoptek spyder and used technomancers backpack and spare torso and guns to make a small destroyer Same with tau and admech and drukhari and orks and marines and chaos and imperial guard, i got 1-2 boxes for each over the months and frankly once i am done im done I just wanna collect all the factions i like I will take the rules of kill team which i like because of how much beefier each marine feels as marine teams come at 6 units vs for example guardsmen that come in teams of 14 plus the alternate activation keeps the game fast Im homebrewing rules for them to be more fluffy and engaging based on what i like from past editions and what i think fits them, for example most units are injured when they lose half health which makes them slower and less steady, but orks only get injured if they lose 3/4th of health because in lore they can suffer a lot of damage and keep fighting eldar each turning point roll a D6 and on 4+ the game goes from usual kill team of alternating players activating 1 model each to the Classic 40k "i play, you play" as because of the eldar high senses and ability to see in the future they get to all activate only for then the enemy to activate Is it hyper balanced and super stingy with bare bone rules like "you move 1 extra inch" no Im making this so i can play with friends and have fun Im also taking the concept of equipment from kill team and expanding it, you know the stilts guy from admech? Will i make him a model? No, but i will make him an optional equipment to give a skitarii so it has those stilts, same with the winged skitarii and the older ones with shield and maces Same with gargoyles, neurogaunts, barbagaunt ecc, just slap it on X amount of termagaunts or hormogants

Man this sucks. Well it’s a good thing I still have the codexes for older editions. Maybe I can get my frens to play some games with those. Sadly I think I’m limited in which ones since the army I’m building right now is Sisters of battle.

these flagrant rules changes based on profit margins are another reason why i believe in and preach piracy. if enough people were to catalogue older editions and rulesets of warhammer for free online access then it would be an effective way of mitigating this problem GW is making of course doing things that way will make playing the game significantly less accessible so we the consumer have to at the very least do something about these predatory tactics GW have been putting to practice for a very long time now
@originaljoke-y5fКүн бұрын
of course making a significant enough difference that Games Workshop shareholders should care would mean getting a majority of the community to wake the fuck up and stop whinging about this weeks newest vapid nonsense in order to run a boycott or something and... that's just not gonna happen

justice for The Maccabbians Jannissaries or The Valhallans, how can you have a series like Caiphas Cain and not push Valhallan models GW...fuck me they dont know what they're doing.

Whelst I do agree with alot of what you are saying here, I think the end goal isn't what you are saying. Most of the bad decisions can be attributed to laziness, incompetence, and greed (when it comes to the legal department trying to copyright everything and get things watertight. I don't think theres any grand scheme to dull the game down and do away with player choice. Its just the result of underpaid and overworked teams doing what they can with the little they have, especially the rules writers. 10th is a beta for what the new system could be, signs point to 11th fine tuning and adding stuff that's missing at this stage of the new style of the game. The new system is regement+detachment+characters. Taninth 1st are just catachan in the stealth detachment with maybe gaunts ghosts (unit) and a few generic characters, to give an example of the current way of playing a regiment without strict rules support like that. The rules are generic and freeing in alot of ways, weird catch 22 of the new way its done.

i find this very hard to believe. While i dont think there is some eyes wide shut, hooded figures in power grand conspiracy there will be bean counters distilling the hobby down into their most basic numerical values and making business choices based on that, and in that sense tourney players who buy a new army to chase the meta every few months is exactly who they would want to chase. As for the rules, again i find it hard to excuse because ive seen rules written by unpaid fans that are far better in both execution, and editorial quality.

Send a message - don’t buy any models for a month as a community - they only care about the bottom line, so this is the only way they will listen

Ah come on. 40K has never been about the baseline humans. At the very, very least it was already a game about Space Marines and their battles and adventures since 2nd edition. Games Workshop produce miniatures, not games or rules (with a couple of exceptions admittedly- I think their best work is in Necromunda). Buy the minis that you like. Play the rules that you& your friends like. Write your own lore. Kitbash and convert your own guys, you'll be happier than if you're genuinely waiting for GW to tank.

Strange then the guard range grew massively in 2nd edition with all their full regiments available. GWs attempt to lean into the "we're just a miniatures company" mindset led to the disaster of AoS first edition that the game still hasn't recovered from.
@sevatarlives185Күн бұрын
@@jamesmacken9501 2nd edition, you mean? It's not really strange, though, since it doesn't contradict what I said. The IG range did expand AND ALSO Space Marines were firmly placed as the protagonistic faction by then. And no, *I* treat GW as a miniatures company *because* of their frequent poor choices in lore and rules. Even for Necromunda, which I love, there has been a glut of essentially pointless background books. GW already produced all the good lore, at least the stuff that inspires me, and I have selections of editions of rules to pick from. So they're only good for miniatures to me 👍

i really shouldent do because its sort of bad for civilisation but il admit to revelling in being right about the general direction the company was going to head in as soon as the first hints of this mentality started to rear its head started to surface GWs new painting "system" all the way back in the late two thousands and taking away depth from the rules in tiny amounts. I remember posting in forums and being attacked for "elitism" for speculating what pandering to the lowest common denominator would lead to simplyfing everything to the point where the game and longevity of said game as a hobby massively drops off for people that want to have it as a hobby for life. Luckily other games and dedicated groups for previous editions and high effort enthusiast level hobby groups exist as a bulwark against this really toxic and frankly insulting mindset that everything needs to be reduced to a congealed slop where creativity passion and wanting the best for new hobbists by not stunting their growth and shielding them from things that they will actually come to love despite finding frustating at first.

Ah, yes. The cringe-lord writing team is hot at it again, I see. I've been saying it for a while, now. Their new, former Hasbro, exec, I don't know the name, I'm not going to learn the name, I don't care, whoever it is can get in the sea, is fast tracking 40k to the M:tG model of game play and sales. New season of Standard! Buy all new armies or you're not allowed to play, because it's all been relegated to legends. But you can* still play with legends models. * being the operative word there. You're able to, just no one will play with you if you do, because the only people who still play only play to go to tournaments and the occasional casual who is shortly realizing it's just not a fun game. And even the tournament players are starting to move over to different games.
