Episode 181 - Spiritual sequel, successor, offshoot, etc. These are all terms to describe a game that is... well... a spiritual successor. Not a true follow-up game in the same series.

Speaking of Spiritual Sequels, I've been in talks with Sega to bring about one for Pebble Beach, made in that old style, y'know? They didn't seem too interested, especially when I mentioned that I wanted motion controls like in that Wii Sports game. And apparently they're not in the console-making market anymore! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THIS?? Crushed dreams... :'(

I enjoyed the demo of the first game, and pre-ordered the pack. Don't regret it one bit. The "spiritual successor" part actually cones in ASG2, when you play as Copen. I won't get too far into it, but his battlebot can download Grimoires for Copen to use.

Disaster Day of Crisis is a European only Wii game that's a spiritual successor to the Disaster Report/Raw Danger. It's mostly thematically/presentation wise but there are allot of set pieces in Day of Crisis that look very similar to Disaster Report/Raw Danger.

it's not official, like it wasnt made by Irem, it was made by Monolith instead but the Disaster report series must have been a direct inspiration. If you live in europe, this game goes for like 3 euro, if you live in america you need a softmodded system and everything will be fine (since like most if not all Wii games this one also has progressive scan and 50/60 hz mode)

@friendlyghost75
@friendlyghost75 7 жыл бұрын
That same pack is available in the USA, and man, those are all terrific games. That's one of the problems with the "physical only" policy. Downloadable games have just gotten too good to ignore! Especially if you're an older gamer and want new games in the old genres you enjoy. Outside of Nintendo they pretty much don't release new platformers or Shmups anymore in physical versions. But the downloadable markets are full of wonderful examples of these genres. Sometimes they do come to disc, like Shovel Knight, but sometimes they don't, like Sine Mora, and I wouldn't want to stop playing the game genres I grew up with just because there's no physical objects anymore. Plus if you wait for digital sales the prices can be incredibly good.

I remember in a previous episode you said you preferred Radiant Silvergun to Ikaruga, so it's interesting to hear that you're no longer sure. Seems like that's a good idea for an episode... games that you've changed your minds on over the years. I hope that you do talk about Kung Fu again though! There is a lot to mention about it's origins and name changes. One of my favorite spiritual sequels is of course Double Dragon, which was a big improvement over Renegade (which in Japan was the first Kunio Kun game). But of course you could go way back with Galaga from Galaxian, Of course Perfect Dark came from Goldeneye, but the Goldeneye team left to work on the Time Splitters series, also I've heard that Shinobido 1 & 2 come from the same team that worked on Tenchu 1, 2, & Shadow Assassins.

My favourite "spiritual sequel" may be H2Overdrive, which is a sequel, from the same development team, to HYDRO THUNDER in practically every way except the name, which whomever controls Midway's back catalogue owns. Unfortunately, it's still arcade-only so it's nothing you guys can really cover. I know there's an official sequel to HYDRO THUNDER but that was from a different development team as the original. Another one: the first MIDNIGHT CLUB RACING game from Rockstar was essentially just an expanded version of MIDTOWN MADNESS 2 from the same development team, except without licensed cars (which didn't appear in the series until MIDNIGHT CLUB 3). The original MIDTOWN MADNESS from 1998 on PC could also be seen as a spiritual sequel to 1989's VETTE from Spectrum Holobyte (a 3D open world racing game made in the fricking 1980s) except I actually asked the developers on the official MIDTOWN MADNESS forum whether VETTE was an inspiration and they said they'd never heard of it. TEST DRIVE III (from 1990) could also be seen as a spiritual sequel to VETTE (both early attempts at 3D open world racing), although I don't think there was any formal connection between the developers or the primitive 3D graphics engines. I'd say TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED was sorta the spiritual sequel to TEST DRIVE III but that's kind of a stretch since both games are in the same franchise.

I think HTH was great, except i was not a fan of the ring levels being a requirement. Sure they are cool because they help teach you the track possibilities but having them as a requirement to 100% completion is terrible... it reminds me of superman on the n64 or all star racing transformed. I think the great thing they accomplished with HTH is the motivation to beat your time and improve efficiency on getting through levels.. which IMO has an arcade feel. But as much as i like HTH, I am really disappointed the real sequel H2overdrive didn't get a home port. I just don't have room at home for another arcade cabinet... especially not a huge sit down one like that. It would be totally worth the money though if i did. I am not sure if I like it better than the original hydro thunder but only because the original is such a great game... it is so hard to stack anything up next to it. I wish there would be a hard copy version of H2O and the other raw thrills games from that generation... sort of like a midway treasures but with these newer games.

That's one of my most wanted games for backwards compatibility on Xbox One just because I can't afford a Saturn version and I'd like to play the game on a controller that has a serviceable D-pad. Suggestion for a future spiritual successors episode: Strider. Besides the legit sequels, it has a series of spiritual follow ups worth checking out, especially Osman (Jaleco, arcade) and Moon Diver (Square Enix, XBLA/PSN). Koichi Yotsui was behind both of those. Also I don’t know if anyone already pointed this out, but Side Arms was itself already a spiritual sequel to Capcom’s Section Z.

I have that reason, as well as I don't have much space on my Wii U (never bought an external hard drive for it). That being said, I have digitally purchased a few games for it.

Chaos89P So have I, and I never bought an external hard drive for it either, as I think Nintendo should have provided me with enough space in the first place. So getting a console at full price, I am not going out and buying an accessory that makes the console less bullshit. That aside, I downloaded Metroid Trilogy and Xenoblade Chronicles (both on first week discount), and that already ate 1/3 of my hard drive, the other 1/3 being dedicated entirely to freakin' Smash Bros updates. 32 GB is absolutely laughable, when your competition has 500 GB and you are enabling Wii game downloads.. games, that unlike NES, SNES, and N64 games, are DVD sized and thus eat up way more space. Imagine if the PS4 or X1 only had 32 GB, you couldn't even install let alone play half of your games. I mean, good luck finding a retail game that only takes 32 GB of install space. (Rant and tangent, over...)

i dunno about other people but i actually don't mind when you guys bring up a game you have talked about already if its for a different purpose like this, you always manage to put a nice new spin on things so it never feels over used is all i guess. Anyway great video can't wait for the next.

Project Gotham Racing 3 blew me away at the time. I remember reading an interview with one of the development team members back in 2005 before it was released, and he said that the London Bridge was constructed with roughly the same amount of polygons that were used to make the entire London track in PGR2. I sunk lots of hours into PGR3.

Its worth mentioning that Strania The Stella Machina is in many ways the spiritual successor to the Project RS (Radiant Silvergun) series, it taking the place of Project RS3. Iuchi, the main designer/director of RS and Project RS2 (Ikaruga) left Treasure to pursue the Project RS3 project which turned out to be Strania.

Side Arms looks curiously similar to Macross (Super Dimension Fortress Macross) for NES and it is from the 1985, the transformation and the design of the mech / valkyrie specially Also Trouble Shooter / Battle Mania for Sega Genesis reminds me a little of Side Arms on having both vertical and horizontal scrolling together on some stages

Very nice episode! A few notes: Kung Fu (Spartan X on the Famicom) did have a true sequel named Spartan X 2, however in the arcades Kung Fu Master's spiritual sequel is Vigilante. Hyper Dyne Side Arms is the spiritual sequel of Section Z. Metal Slug is the spiritual sequel/offshoot of Cyber-Lip or the latter is the spiritual prequel/offshoot of Metal Slug.

I had MTR on the Dreamcast and did enjoy it. My favorite part was the way it used your system time to make the track in the game world match the real time day/night at that time you're playing. Pretty cool and ahead of games today still...and also not mentioned, the DJ played your own music and utilized DJs in between songs with the OG Xbox and PGR games

I also forgot Biowares Dragon Age series. Which is a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. Though Dragon Age is under EA's corporate umbrella while Baldur's Gate was under the late Interplay's.

Dear Dave, For Limbo, as well as many games, you have to download 2 files to have the full game. You must download the demo and the unlock patch which is around 6 kb super small. In the PSN store go to download list or previous purchases and you will see 2 files for Limbo. Anyways great video guys!
