By the way, the reason why you couldn't find Kula World/Kula Quest's US release is because it was completely renamed for the American version - it was called Roll Away there for whatever reason.

Street Fighter EX has a pretty beloved following to the point that when developer Arika made a April Fools trailer for a sequel to those games about 10 years ago, people went bananas and there was enough demand for Fighting EX Layer to become a thing. It has none of the capcom stuff in it, but it has all of Arika's original characters as well as Terry Bogard.

9:18 *"These four are all based on the K1 martial art, which looks a lot like kickboxing."* It is kickboxing. K1 is a kickboxing promotion, in the same way that UFC is an MMA promotion. What you showed of them actually looks very impressive for a PS1 game!
@VexAcer
@VexAcer 9 ай бұрын
FYI there's also: Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon (2D sprites, but polygonal environments) Colin McRae Rally (Has a 60fps mode similar to GT1 hidden behind a cheatcode, heavily reduces the trackside detail) Namco Museum Volume 1/2 (The Museum portions are in fully explorable 3D, but these sections were capped to 30fps in Volume 3-5) The Next Tetris (It's Tetris but it does use 3D graphics & also is the only other 3D PS1 game I know besides Devil Dice & iS that runs at a full 640x480 ingame) Rat Attack (Weird action puzzle game seemingly designed w/ the PS1 in mind as the framerate was halved when ported to N64) It's the PS1 so the library is massive, there's probably even more stuff out there that qualifies, but is super obscure or japan only. Also Slap Happy Rhythm Busters isn't pointlessly interlaced, but just has a very unconventional high res mode. It's only high res on one axis which means it renders at 320x480 instead something like 512x480.

@KopperNeoman
@KopperNeoman 9 ай бұрын
The higher resolution of PAL is outweighed by the longer vblank interval sometimes. The GPU works a bit harder per-frame but the CPU gets more time to think. PAL really was the superior standard, but so much stuff was designed for NTSC that its single shortcoming became infamous.
@Kazeira
@Kazeira 5 ай бұрын
Generally European developers optimized correctly their games for PAL releases. They often made their games full screen and play at the correct speed, sometimes they even used the extra time left to the CPU to do other things. Seriously people often criticize PAL releases for nothing, yes 60hz is better than 50Hz, but 576i/288p is also better than 480i/240p and English isn't everyone's first language (+ games often released later so sometimes we had some game fixes). The funny part is the games that weren't optimized in their speed but were for their resolution are the superior version today in emulators if you force 60hz as long as the game don't need sound synchronization. We need PAL semi-optimized patches to play every games at 288p 60hz

I was always surprised by how many PS2 and GameCube games prioritized framerate, especially considering how 5th gen (and later 7th gen) consoles had such abysmal performance so often, especially N64. I always prefer a high and stable framerate over graphical fidelity, and I’m glad a lot of modern console games give us that performance option.
@JazGalaxy
@JazGalaxy 9 ай бұрын
Usually any game that “prioritized frame rate” was built for a lower quality machine and so the frame rate buff was just a happy coincidence. Unless we’re talking about something like F-Zero where it was to help make it appear fast. The ps2, Xbox, GameCube era was the first generation where we really started to see the same game be made for multiple consoles at the same time without basically building separate versions from scratch.

Sadly n64 was a victim of being too complicated for it's own good. Kaze Emanuar has been optimizing Mario 64's source code to run a way more advanced version at above 30. His work has shown the original Mario 64 could have been 60 fps if they had the knowledge and time back then

@@JazGalaxyIt was also generally the case for exclusives. Not all of them mind you, but if a game ran at 60 it was probably helped by only having to be on one system! A lot of games designed or initially designed with the PS2 in mind ran at 60 for example: Ace Combat, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, Armored Core, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal Black, Zone of the Enders, etc. These were fairly advanced games too with open environments and/or a lot of effects. PS1 can be kind of weird when trying to nail down the actual frame rate since it's able to selectively update certain things at different rates. The mainline Final Fantasies are a popular example since the battle menus themselves update at 60fps even though the battles certainly don't. But speaking of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VII has the Speed Square mini-game that runs at 60, as well as the snowboard mini-game.

Nice job putting this one together, Joe! It must have been a real pain in the ass figuring out what all of the 60fps games were and getting all this footage of each game. It's incredibly easy to just take things for granted without really stopping and thinking about all the hard work that goes into stuff like this, so I just want to let you know that I do very much appreciate it. Been watching you for years, since back in the Dave era of the show. I always love to see Dave come back for a show on rare occasion too. He's become very nostalgic, and he's super funny. I'll never forget that hilarious skit where he gets stalked by that Sonic plushie. It's an all time classic. I'd love to see you do a sequel skit one day where Sonic returns to stalk Dave yet again after all these years, and maybe this time he actually stalks both of you. You know, there is this idea most people have that Sony "hated" 2D games and didn't want any of them on the PS1. I'm pretty sure that's an exaggeration and not entirely accurate. Nobody really wanted 2D games at the time, not just Sony. It's not because they were hated, but rather because they wanted games that showed off the power of their hardware. 3D was the next big thing. If they truly hated 2D so much, they wouldn't have allowed any to be released on their console. There are many 2D games on the PS1, and so much more then most people even realize.

With I.Q., you are aware that when you destroy a green cube, it leaves a green mark on the ground that you can then detonate at will to destroy the 3x3 grid of cubes around it, right? Because that's kind of a big part of what makes I.Q. so exciting! You can't really complete later levels without placing and using those green "landmine" cubes very carefully! I.Q. also has a unique ending for every playable character, which is kind of rad. It's really a very exciting and fast-paced puzzle game once you get the hang of it! (Also, there's a Japan-only sequel to I.Q. on the PlayStation 1 called I.Q. Final, which I believe also runs at 60 fps! It's an improvement over the original game in basically every way, and is the best I.Q. title IMHO, even surpassing the PS2 sequel known as I.Q. Remix+. Recommended to check out sometime!)

Yes and no. When a game is named a western name like Darius (written in katakana), the Japanese pronunciation isn’t necessarily “correct” since they are acknowledging that it’s not a Japanese word. For instance, if they named a game “Emily” and wrote it “e-me-ri”, an American would call it “E-me-ri” they would just call it “Emily”.

It’s pretty impressive how the developers were able to get everything looking and running good later on in the PS1’s life. Example being Bloody Roar and then Bloody Roar 2 which were only a couple years apart.

How did you research this? is there a database? or did you painstakingly load up every 3D PS1 game and analyse the frames?

Once again I love to see Zero Divide 2 appear on these lists, though it's a bit of a wait to get to it since the list is sorted alphabetically. Such an underrated gem. Maybe not the most original thing in the world, but it feels very smooth to play and the soundtrack is absolutely killer. Do check this one out if you haven't and if you like Virtua Fighter-style fighting games!

That 60fps Battle Arena 3 looked... like it was in a weird slow motion. when a game goes from 30 to 60, it usually looks faster not slower.

Great video! Found some titles I'd like to check out that I missed out on back then. Just wanted to note that Vs. did come out in the States and it was a kind of predecessor to Slap Happy Rhythm Busters. Both were made by Polygon Magic. They also released another PS1 fighter, Lord Of Fist/Shaolin, but I can't remember if the fights ran at 60 FPS in that game.

Additional to the wrestling game AJPW: King's souls (at 42:30), which IMO is by far the best wrestling game on the system (as well as the two King of Colosseum Games based on the same game engine on the PS2), there's also Yuke's NJPW: Toukon Retsuden 3 with an optional 60 fps mode. But using that mode the Referee is missing. Toukon Retsuden 2 also had such mode, but I guess it doesn't count since it was only available via a cheatcode. Also a heavily modified Toukon Retsuden 3 game engine (upgraded in terms of graphic fidelity, downgraded in terms of gameplay and realism) was the basis for the PS1 WWE Smackdown games (as well as the prior to Smackdown released budget games "Simple 1500 Series Vol. 22: The Pro Wrestling" and "Simple 1500 Series Vol. 52: The Pro Wrestling 2").
