Athena was the first video game that I actually realized was bad. I remember renting it from a video store. I was very excited because every NES game I had was great. Pretty big disappointment, but not neat so big as when I spent $40 ( big money for a 12 year old) on Deadly Towers expecting something like The Legend of Zelda.

I beat some of the hardest games on NES when I was a kid - Ninja Gaiden, TMNT, Ghost 'n Goblins... but I always got stuck in Athena. Such a relief to hear that there are soft locks in the game, and it wasn't me.

I always thought Athena and Psycho Soldier were great games. Very surprised and mildly disappointed to see it in this block. (Granted, it's not the arcade version, which is the version I am actually accustomed to) But oh well, at least it got ran. EDIT: Watched more, holy shit this port is garbage. Maybe Arcade next time?

they screw this up so often. Most confusing was when they also mix matched the players names, hat one players screen suddenly on BOTH sides at the same time, then swapped them around and screwed it up again. And every time one player hat a screen timeout it again showed the other one on both sides..... They need to get this fixed, and please nobody make up lame ass excuses like its for charity, they don't get paid bla bla bla. Some streamers with barely any equipment manage to get that one working.

Athena, the greek goddess of strategic warfare, math, and law.. at least SNK kept her and with the right skill she is amazing in King of Fighters :) Her teleporting dodge attack is amazing. Another Athena was a womens indy wrestling, freaking amazing to see her (even in mix tag/intergender matches), trained by Booker T, and people today know her as Ember Moon in WWE.

Maybe it's just that I was too young to appreciate how bad it was, but I really liked this game. The glitches are just trippy to me. I enjoyed the music, especially World of Sea. I don't think I ever got past that level though.

All the bash on Athena, to me it's like Ghosts 'n Goblins. If they fix the bugs like randomly de-spawning items getting softlocked what were some of the game breaking bugs again? Anyways it would be exactly like Ghosts 'n Goblins, people seem to like that one. Edit: wait a quick look at wiki says her equipment disappears because it degrades?
