GameSir T1d - DJI Tello Remote Control Review

The DJI Tello is one of my favorite quadcopters, this little flyer has been in every event or demonstration I have visited recently, and now with the GameSir T1d remote you can finally control it like any other quadcopter.
The GameSir T1d is connected via Bluetooth to your phone which is connected to the quadcopter's WiFi network, we had to get it reviewed as this means that it's probably the first upgrade for your DJI Ryze Tello drone.
So why do you need a controller like the GameSir T1d for the Tello? The main thing here is the ability to make subtle movements with the quadcopter, this is something that can be done with a remote control easily.

Hi, haven't you encountered delayed reaction when releasing the stick after moving forward or backward or left and right sideways? No problem for up and down.

Good video. I wish Tello supported more controllers. Found out that it doesn't work with the Steelseries Stratus Duo. One thing you left out is Holding down L2 plus a direction on the D pad will make the drone flip. It's nice that it doesn't have to be in that dedicated mode. It would be nice if the ABX buttons could be used to activate some of the other modes.

Hey thanks for the comment! If I remember correctly - this is being done using the trigger buttons, the ones on the outer part of the remote.

Can The Controller increase the flight height?

No mate it won't increase the altitude. But it's very simple to over ride the factory settings. Download the "TALS " app. It's free and so simple to use. Once you've got the app, you link to the the tello drone, and set the altitude to anywhere between the default 10m - 30m. Takes minutes to do. Once you've set it to your liking you can even uninstall the TALS app if you want. Once you've set it up, ....the app has done its job, and is surplus to requirements. Then if you want to extend the lineal range.....? Get a wi-fi repeater. It looks like a usb dongle, but its hinged above the usb connector so you can point it up like the aerial on a radio. You also have to download an app for the repeater, but again,....its free. The repeater "dongle" is only about £6 - £8. The tello is a great little drone. Hard to fly without a proper controller, cos you haven't got a physical connection with the touch screen controls. So if you want to make the experience a lot easier, and far more fun,...? Get a hand controller, a wi-fi repeater, some spare propeller blades,..........and most importantly, a spare battery. 😉👍. Have fun. 👌

My understanding is that the T1d controller has been neutered to ONLY work with the Tello...you can't use it for general game use. I'm hoping that the tradeoff is that with this version they've made it very simple to connect with Tello. I saw another review on Tello where the person used the GameSir T1 controller with the Tello and it worked great but there were quite a few steps 6 or 7 to get it all connected (straight foward but kinda involved). It seems that the T1d version simplifies/eliminates most of those steps but at the cost of making the controller only work with the Tello! Is that your understanding?

That is my interpretation as well. I just received the T1D and I really do like it a lot. One thing I wish it had would be a way to connect it via OTG cable (like my Spark has) and eliminate the bluetooth part. Otherwise, for the short range flying I do with the Tello, this works quite well.

This is a couple months late, but L2+Dpad will make the drone flip. R2+Y also causes the drone to take off or land.

Nobody received a cable with theirs, right? I tried to fit every micro USB cable I own into that recessed port, but all of mine have an oval housing that just won't fit. Anyone have suggestions for a good option?

No, They come without remote. There are be packages out there that come with remote, though, but at an added cost.

I got this controller, but sometime i lose wifi connection during the flight... If i use tello with phone only i never lose wifi connection... Someone the same problem?

Bluetooth and WiFi both run on 2.4ghz spectrum, the Bluetooth transmission on the controller is strong and can give you interference on your wifi signal. You can improve your wifi quality with a Xiaomi Mi 2 repeater. But you'll always have some kind of interference. I use a OTG cable with my phone and a compatible controller that is wired not wireless

@@cowboy10731 Can the T1D be connected via OTG? Haven't really seen any info about whether it can or not. As far as I know, the micro-USB port is for charging only. But if it is OTG as well, it would be nearly perfect.

@@NJP76 there is another version of the T1 that is just otg and does not have Bluetooth, that would be my advice. The other option is to get a Moto z series phone, any generation will work, probably get a first gen for good money and then buy the gamepad mod which is essentially otg but built for the phone. I have the gamepad mod and it's worked great after you customize the controls for sensitivity

Having OTG capability would make it that much better though. I am going to look into getting device to dedicate to the Tello and my Spark. A Moto-Z sounds like it would be a good candidate. Always liked Motorola phones. Thanks again for the advice.

Hi, I ordered the T1d from Newegg. It says T1d in the manual, and the buttons are specific to the T1d from the pictures I've seen. I'm using android. I also tried connecting with a current Ipad and the Ipads Bluetooth does not see the controller at all. The controller shows up when using the phone (LG G4, with 4.1 version Bluetooth) but never fully connects after countless tries. Everything is turned on, including permissions. I probably need to return it ..though that doesn't sound fun -Thanks

As of Nov 2020 $49. There are three sub-models to the T1d (lights in dif. places) LOTS of people having trouble with them for Tello. As the Gamesir T1d is only for the Tello, not games, not nothing, it is useless when it doesn't work for Tello. Mine is useless after one day. It refuses to talk to my phone. Buyer beware!
