In Skyrim, the "bug" is made because 2 things happened: 1) you started attacking before the ending dialogue. 2) you bring a comoanion that activatrs itselfe when you do step 1. To not having this issue: wait till the dialogue ends, so Vilkas could use his weapons to do the "tutorial" well done.

Vilkas: "Here is my sword, go take it to Eorlund (...)" * Eorlund shows up offscreen and begins attacking the player * Edit: Actually, the whole timing is funny. Vilkas telling that the sword is more important than the player life while Eorlund is doing a finisher, and also the level up sound after the character dies.
