For those still commenting here, I guess the message isn't understood - This video has been updated - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6Gaf5etrq-Ui7s&lc=z13oidlbzqiazfumd23qeb35nqy3t300j There is an MSRP, at the time the MSRP for Metroid Prime Trilogy was 60 dollars new, so Gamestop could not charge more than that even though it was technically worth more. But if they opened the new games, then they were considered used and could be sold for more, thus Gamestop opened them and sold them for around 90 dollars. Even though they were brand new, technically only being opened and sold. That's the point here, several people were trying to justify this to me and outright lie to my face, so that's a shortened explanation to what happened. This video is 2 years + old, please remember prices change, things change, demand changes. Currently 2 years later, the games even now, the Steel Book Version of Metroid Prime Trilogy is now being sold at 60-75 dollars complete. +voltzyhit It wasn't cheaper, they are a store, MSRP demanded they sell the game at 60 dollars, they opened the game and sold them for 90 dollars. You missing something here?

You were probably just as bad at explaining it to them as you were at explaining it here. People had no idea what you were going on about when you said that the first guy told the truth and admitted that they had used games for $90. At that point, your only accusation was that they had used games for $90 leaving us to wonder "What the heck is wrong with that? If that is what it's worth there, then that is what it's worth there." We get NO additional clarity as you describe your next two encounters and it almost sounds like you're complaining that the used condition is suspiciously good (as if it were a bad thing?). The sealed value is typically higher than used, so expecting us to figure that they were opening new merchandise to sell for more as used is a stretch. I know you got to that eventually, but your argument about "proof" was laughable and tedious before that. The proof is the email, not the good condition. The lower MSRP explanation doesn't make sense either: "S" = "Suggested"

For clarity since so many comments ask about it and the video was unclear: Gamestop is opening new games which have to be sold at a certain price point to sell them as used games which can be priced at whatever the market will allow. In the case of Xenoblade it was such a rare game that people are willing to pay more than new game prices just to get their hands on it. The people at the store have zero control over this and ProtoMario makes a hilariously astute observation that managers will lie to you- they are trained to and their job depends on doing so! Gamestop is a terrible company that takes advantage of people who are ridiculously bad at math and/or lazy. You can buy lower and sell higher on eBay or just keep your games because one day having a room/closet full of classic games is way cooler than being a neophile.

Nicholas Houzenga From your torrential pro Gamestop commenting I cannot tell for certain if you are a paid shill or just really stupid. Gamestop has over six thousand locations, so forgive us if you not noticing them doing anything like this at two locations does not convince everyone no wrong doing occurred. Gamestop had a monopoly on the distribution of this game and has been documented, and sued, for underhanded business tactics time and time again. This is not particularly surprising for a company built on the pawn shop business model. If you only buy games at Gamestop then good for you. You are still paying more than eBay prices, but convenience counts for something. However, anyone who sells to Gamestop is a moron. I met this one moron who was talking up Gamestop so I asked him about his last several transactions. We figured out that between buying and selling to Gamestop he had spent close to two hundred dollars to own two games and have the equivalent of a month or two of GameFly. Real savvy investment there!

You are the second person in this comment section to accuse me of being a paid shill. So, let me spell it out for you. I've been a customer of Game-stop for roughly seven years now. I pay for a pro membership every year. Which gives me a year of Game-informer plus around five percent more off used games. The yearly subscription for Game-informer alone is worth the fifteen dollars. I buy like new for a decent savings. I've only spent over fifty dollars for two games both which were new at the time. Final Fantasy 12 Special Edition and Final Fantasy 13-2 Special Edition. I also bought a strategy guide along side my new copy of Final Fantasy 13-2 and a Special Edition Strategy Guide. I received a minor discount for buying both at the same time. The special Edition of the Strategy guides are sold for around thirty dollars and you get a hard cover book with twice the content and all sort of artist illustrations. I have had a few problems with the store. One minor one was when I bought a used game online and it didn't work. I seldom find anything wrong with there games and I can always take the games back to the store for a full refund if it doesn't work, something I don't have to do often. They refund the cost of the game but not the shipping if the game is bought on there website. One valid complaint I do have about the store is how they price there systems. I somewhat regret purchasing a used Xbox 360. It was cheaper than a new console but didn't come with any games. Now I'm seeing this After Christmas Special which is selling a new Xbox 360 with Tomb Raider and Halo 4 for two-hundred, I never sell my games to Game-stop because I know what they give for those games is crap.

However, when it is used, or just out of its original state, made possible by just taking of the wrapping. Rare games, like Xenoblade or Metroid Prime 3, are out of production, and would sell for much more than $60 otherwise. So, that's why!

Right before it's value skyrocketed, I sold the Collector's edition of Metroid Prime Trilogy for $15 at gamestop. Because it was still worth $50 retail at the time, the store didn't technically rip me off (I got 30% of it's *retail* value rather than *used* value, which is acceptable). Literally less than two weeks later I heard the game had stopped being produced and that some copies had sold for more than $200 used and I've regretted my decision to sell it ever since.

adornedatom Sarcasm noted! XD Well, we live in a free market society. As long as there are people willing to fork over a thousand dollars for a sealed pokemon crystal gameboy color cartridge, I am here to do it. If they spend so much money so easily, money OBVIOUSLY doesn't have much value to them. On the other hand, money does matter for me, sealed paper boxes with plastic cartridges and CDs inside do not. I can find them in non-physical format (ROMs, downloadable games) for free or for a very very very very very very low price. But I'm not a collector, I'm just a consumer. You will be surprised how many people idolize things and are willing to pay an arm and a leg for some trivial things. You take advantage of the sentimental,historical and valued property of an item. That way a dude sold a *NON-WORKING, DIRTY* copy of Atari's E.T. game that was buried in the ground for $2,000. I'm just waiting to sell my NES,Atari 2600 and gameboy cartridges for $3,000 a piece (most sealed, very few used) when the time is ready. Don't forget that most people just resale them with even more value after they purchased them. You gotta just search for a price and follow the waves. *All the above are not even restricted to video games*

SciencePup TheAmericanJoe it's simply the fact that they are not allowed to buy unopened games. And to be honest, don't complain about their prices they pay you. It's a company, they make a business out of it buying used games and reselling them, of course they won't pay you $15 if they sell the game for $20. Next time, keep the games sealed and sell them on eBay or whatever. You can sell it as new since it is sealed and get more they would by selling it used. Just common sense.

I'm a Gamestop employee who has been with the company for over 3 years and I am a keyholder. I can say this is false, we do not open new games to sell as used unless it was a new to used sku conversion. These happen a while after a game comes out and they stop production on new copies. We can't sell them new if they don't exist. So new copies are opened up or sometimes just added to preowned while still sealed. And on the topic of Xenoblade chronicles, it was released as a Gamestop exclusive when it came to the us. So yes, Gamestop had all the copies and ended up with a lot of preowned as well due to defective exchanges they fixed and people trading it in for a high price. Since it was exclusive the price went up. Demand was there supply was not so the price was very high. So since you did your homework when will there be a thank you to Gamestop for releasing the game for you?

+Code Black HQ The difference is that a store has to sell a sealed copy for MSRP. Yeah I am aware different stores, selling different types of products will sell it over MSRP, but depending on the product they are selling you could report them. If a company makes a game and tags an MSRP of $59.99 on it, the store that has that product is forced to sell it at retail price. What Game Stop is doing here is they are taking that new product, unwrapping it, and opening it. Now, because it is no longer in its original wrapping the game is now considered used and they are allowed to sell it at whatever price. They realize these products were in limited print, they realize they are highly sought after, and are using a small loophole in the system to make a profit. That being said, whoever this Protomario guy is (only stumbled on this video as it was part of my reccomended), is crying to deaf ears. Everyone knows Game Stop has been a shitty/shady store for ages now. He could have been informative and let people know what was going on without making it seems like he is about to start a revolution. If he had actual hard proof, like he says he does, that the stores are doing this he could, and should, report them to the BBB. The fact of the matter is that even though he knows they do it, even though we know they do it, that just simply isn't enough. Realizing some one does something, no matter how true it is, does not equate to hard evidence. Do I believe Game Stop does it? Sure. Am I gonna cry about it? No, I would just tell my family and friends so they are on their toes next time they shop there.

+J Tinamisan it depends on the game and its availability. I also live in canada and have talked to GS employees about older games. Xenoblade and the yarn kirby game are hard to find and priced higher. Xenoblade just didn't sell well and was sent back, making them over priced. While you're not wrong about lower prices for games, it all depends on when it was released, how many copies there are, and for what system. An obscure GBA game may sell for $5 while a Pokemon game, Leafgreen or Firered, may sell for $50. I bought Chibi Robo for gamecube a while back for $60-80. Hell, if GS got their hands on Pokemon Stadium, 1 OR 2, for N64, there's no way they'd sell it for like 5-10 bucks when they KNOW it sells for upwards of 70.

Reading through these comments makes me shake my head. Gamestop employees have told me multiple times that they open "Old stock" to sell as used. Xenoblade, and Metroid Prime Trilogy were both reprinted by Gamestop, and sold as used so that they can sell them for used price,rather than MSRP. If the game is open they can sell it at any price they want to. Gamestop is going down hill fast. In the early 2000's they were a great store. All the employees were gamers, and knew thier stuff. There is only one Gamestop around here that I trust the employees.

***** Please google what MSRP actually means, and then find your own flaws in your comment.The only reason they were opening the games is because those certain games sold more used because the original copies were rare. The games were rereleased under a different publisher, meaning all new copies of the game were basically worthless. For some reason gamestop thought it was a good idea to essentially "fake" these old rare copies by simply opening new copies and calling them used. A retailer can set prices at whatever they want, regardless of msrp.
@joelsinn9302

Hey Guys, This Is My New Name The games were not rereleased under a different publisher. Lol. Gamestop buys them from a company that pays nintendo to reprint them. Hey Guys, This Is My New Name gamestop opens them to sell at current market price. They do this so they don't look bad selling them sealed for current online price which is well above msrp. The thing is that with the reprints the price is only high because gamestop has the prices so high, all my local gamestop have 2+ copies of MP:T, they are all the reprint, which is worth quite a bit less than the original steelbook version.

***** "Gamestop buys them from a company that pays nintendo to reprint them. Do you really think nintendo would allow another publisher to reprint their titles?" Ok, so try using google before you make a claim. A company called Video Games Plus did make reprints of xenoblade. I don't understand what the difference is if they pay nintendo to do the reprints or if they do the reprints. It really doesn't make a difference, because the point is that they're reprints. I thought that I read an article before that stated Video Games Plus actually did do the reprints themselves, but I can't find that article anymore, and I can't find any evidence that says who actually did the reprint. (since you're dense, I'll clarify, I know there's a difference technically, but the point is it's still a reprint.) "MSRP is mfgs suggested retail price" Thanks for pointing that out. You should probably locate the key word in there that is "suggested". There is no law that I can find that says a video game dealer must sell at MSRP. Again, use google. If they wanted to sell the new games for high dollar, they can. They only can't sell it for high dollar because everyone wants the original copies. I'm not going to keep repeating myself, but you should seriously use google.
@joelsinn9302
@joelsinn9302 9 жыл бұрын
Hey Guys, This Is My New Name I use google, and I have known about Video Games Plus since they started reprinting games. They basicly pay Nintendo, Sony, and other publishers to reprint games that never got a Greatest Hits/Players Choice version. There is nothing wrong with this, or fake about the games. One of the main reasons the games are so high in the first place is because the publishers didnt think they would sell well, so they didnt have a huge first print. When the publisher dropped the ball by not printing more Video Games Plus sees an opportunity and pays to get more printed. In the long run this will not hurt the collecting community at all, the only people it is hurting are the ones that bought the games at a high price to begin with. If you look back at history you will see that even some SNES games were reprinted by 3rd parties when the original publisher didnt want to, the ones that were reprinted are still some of the high sellers for that system. Games that are reprinted by the publishers count as legit, so why should these not count. Look at games like Perfect Dark, DK 64, ect.. They were all reprinted even before the PC versions came out. You aparently didnt read my last post. I said that the reason they open them is so that they dont look bad selling above MSRP, they legally could, but it looks better opening them and selling them as used.

I might be missing something but how would they benefit from opening a new game and saying it is used? Are the Gamestops you visited in a parallel universe where people would rather buy a game used? I thought people would pay more for brand new. Also to me taking the plastic wrapper off would make it used, well if I was selling it. Say if I bought a game brand new, took the plastic wrapper off but never opened the box and sold it on eBay, would be pointless doing that as it would be wasting money but if I did that I'd have to list it as used. Strictly speaking it has never been used but when the buyer receives it there would be no way for me to prove that I had never used it after the seal was broken.

I could be wrong but I think in this case it was a few games that were in high demand and used copies were going for $90, I'm not sure how MSRP works but either they can't charge that much more than the MSRP or it would be bad publicity to extort them, but if they sell it as used it's just the market value..ie they had to pay a premium because it's in such high demand.

Not sure if this was at the time of release or some time after but the gist is that getting a new copy wasn't possible, so I don't know if only they (Gamestop) got them or if other stores sold out right away but the premise is there was no new copies to be found, so they could get away with highway robbery by just opening the packaging. Everything you said in your posts about new games is true, I know I won't buy used at all and definitely not for more money, but if there are no new games to be had then people who are really desperate for those two games would pay a premium (why there was only so much I don't know seems weird, maybe because it's mostly a Japanese game{complete speculation on my part}) Anyway whether this is true or not that it seems these are the circumstances this situation happened under. Pretty sleezy thing to do if true. Sorry if this post reads poorly my brain is running on fumes, having trouble getting coherent sentences together

Not only can they sell it for more money used since new games have to be msrp, when they sell it as used they keep all the profit. A new guy sold at gamestop money goes to them and the dev they split the earnings, but on used games they get 90 bucks instead of 60 and they don't have to give dev any since it was "used"

+Kyle Jacobs what Protomario suggested is a fraudulent scheme that either Gamestop and Nintendo participated in together (which makes him a hypocrite to only condemn Gamesop while wearing his Nintendo fanboy badge) or Gamestop acted alone on (which should have lead Nintendo to file a lawsuit against Gamestop... yet they never did, which sounds really strange by Nintendo standards since they have no problem filing litigation against emulation sites and creators of fan vames). The truth is though, Gamestop held a campaign to offer more than normal trade in credit for the game, then sat on them for a while to allow for prices to increase, then competed against resellers and opened the floodgates.

I actually bought a "used" 2DS, and the system had no signs of play, not even the tiniest of finger prints, or the little dust that would have occurred. The only sign of it being used was the fact that I didn't get an SD card with it. My suspicion is that they opened a new 2DS, took out the SD card, and placed the console back into the box. Luckily, I had the SD card from my broken 3DS.

Exactly! My local gamestop doesn't pull shit like this. My fiancé recently got a job there and his coworker - instead of making me buy two NEW headsets, she looked for a used headset I could buy that was literally taken out of the new packaging and placed as "used" for a lower price just because it didn't sell. And it works GREAT. She also makes sure that I get the best price possible. I've had nothing but good experiences since he's gotten a job there. That and the old manager is gone.

My little brother went to Gamestop and went up to the counter, and asked if they had Super Smash Bros 4 3DS used. They said they didn't, and sold him a new copy for a higher price. Then he just went over to the used 3DS games cabinet to look for random games to also get, and spotted a used copy of Smash 3DS. The GameStop did damage control, refunded the new copy, and sold him the used copy. But it doesn't change the fact that they lied in the first place.

Eric Williams Why would they scam someone into buying a new game which has a profit margin of about 3 dollars instead of selling them a used game that has a profit margin of 20 dollars? Gamestop make 90% of its money on used items. Just because something cost more doesn't mean it makes a company more money. You know how much money Gamestop makes on a brand new Xbox one? 6 Dollars.

+darkespeon64 There is no logic, new games are set at a price when they're "new" but the price is suggest MSRP. SUGGESTED is the key word there, technically GameStop could sell a copy of My Little Pony for $500. No one would buy it but it's not illegal to do so. Gamestop buys the games from the distributors but the price at the store is up to GameStop. Logic says, if games are rare and they still have new copies, there's nothing stopping them from selling them at $150. This guy just doesn't know what he's talking about and wants to fight.

Dude, thats anywhere, not just GameStop- if you bring the shit back- opened, and its not a same day return, your ass gets store credit. Thats Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target- ANYWHERE. Check the policy before you spend your money, otherwise it's your fault. In 2010 I bought a PSP3000 from GameStop, and when I got to the car to test it, it had a busted CPU and wouldnt run games, I took it back and the clerk offered me a choice between a full cash back refund, or a replacement for free. I got my replacement and was on my way. Note, that my PSP actually had a problem, not a preference issue.

I have never seen used games that are more expensive than new games. and I have bought things at GameStop, and EBGames, etc.. and with very few exceptions (for example the Skylanders sets), I have never found a game more than $60, and very few are that price. if you're buying new games for $70 and used games for $90, you're definitely getting ripped off. used games are meant to be cheaper, as they are USED. PREOWNED. that kind of stuff is always cheaper than new, so you should never be paying extra...

So Ive read through some of the comments here of people making excuses about why gamestop would do this, saying things like "Pre-owned is a service to the customer", "They find the stock after removing the 'new' SKU from the system so they label it 'pre-owned' and put it back on the shelf." I am not going to disagree with the fact that pre-owned is a service to the customer as some people cant always afford to buy a game brand new, but it is mainly a service to gamestop, one that without it gamestop would've went under a long time ago. That is where majority of the profit comes from, selling pre-owned, they can set their margin and don't have to pay the publishers anything and aren't charged for 'aged stock', it's a win-win for gamestop and usually a win for the customer, but this case is not a win. Gamestop know exactly what they are doing, because they cant really manipulate a "new game" cost, and they know that people are hunting down these particular games, they will open up the games and throw it into the pre-owned list and jack up the prices, the reason being "Oh! The game is like, really popular and it's becoming really hard to find" a sales technique called "Keeping up with the Jones'" pressuring the customer into buying something based on popularity and demand. Saying that it's because they found it after removing the 'new' SKU is just bull. It is not complicated to add in a new SKU into a POS system, usually staff members one level up from "noob" can make those adjustments in the system. A call like that would be made by a manager who would obviously have the clearance to insert a new SKU into the system. If they couldn't (just going to walk down this road a bit, just to mention how wrong this theory is) If they had stock in the store for so long that the 'new' SKU is no longer in the system, then how the fuck did it avoid stocktake? how was the SKU able to be removed from the system when it obviously doesn't have a '0' quantity? "A whole skid of games is missing? Oh wells... let's just delete it off the POS, shall we?" If that's the case, please hire me to work in a gamestop so i no longer have to spend money on purchasing games, I'll just delete it off the system and then enter derp mode when asked about it. Another option a store has is stock rotation, they organize with the supplier to send back old stock in for new, either swapping out the games for different ones or the same ones just no longer on the system as 'aged' they can also do fake store transfers to take the aged stock out and back in again. There are many options available to them to bring in the stock back into the system as 'new' but the option they chose was the greedy one. You can all defend gamestop as much as you like but with working at multiple retailers and seeing exactly all the procedures they go through and loopholes they find, I can say with certainty that they did this plainly for more profit.

This happened to me but with a ness pre-order. I was asking about if they had a ness amiibo preorder sense this was a small gamestop that no one went to but me and another couple of people. I walk up and a manager was working the register. I walked up and asked and then he started to sweat. He said they just sold out. I was sceptical sense i've heard horror stories and said ok and asked him about earthbound, if i should get it when i already had it, and he said it was his favorite character and he mained him in smash. He was saving this for himself, because i came back in 30 minutes later and asked an employee if he had any ness pre orders, he said the manager had gone on break and gotten the last one. and earlier a guy was talking as i went into the store a guy got his GTA V Next Gen in gamestop wrapping was scratched when he was trying to play it. He was either greedy or telling the truth most likely the latter of the two. And now I have finally gave up hope on this gamestop.

I have a game store called trade a game. You walk in with any game or consol, and they give you the worth of that you paid for it in store credits, and you can use it to buy other games or consoles that are either brand new or restored 90s stuff. No actual money is involved and I love it. In the past year, it has been my go to game store.

I don't know. I've seen some fucked up shit with Gamestop, more specifically the Gamestop closest to me. Walked in one day, dude was selling them an old Altari 2600 (why he chose to sell it to Gamestop I'll never know), looked in good condition though for its age tbh, they offered 15 bucks, couple days later I go back, see the same Altari 2600 up for sale for 200 in the case. I just look at the nearest employee, asked him why they were charging that much, and he straight told me that the manager there at the store chose the price for it because of the age and condition and said that he didn't agree with the price the manager chose at all, considering how close it was to what a new system would be. Moral of the story: If there's a popular game store near you, then they're gonna be fucking assholes with the pricing of used items, especially the older yet well known ones.

@TheJumpManiac
@TheJumpManiac 9 жыл бұрын
ThisIsDjYigytugd Yeah but when you price an old system close to the price of a new system, nobody's gonna buy it. Case in point, went in a few months later and the same Altari 2600 was still there, and they had lowered the price of it from $200, to $150, to $125, to $100, to $75, to $50 to try and sell it better.

Jump Maniac 19 This is true. When an item isn't selling, the price goes lower. When its selling you raise it. Simply supply and demand. You still have people that buy brand new limited edition N64 consoles for way more than any current console.

For the longest time the closest GameStop to my town was half an hour away, and the people who worked there were some of the rudest employees I've ever seen at a store. One time I was buying two magazines there because I was interested in the cover articles, and I had to stand there for five fucking minutes telling the guy at the counter that I didn't want a subscription. Another time my brother was buying a new game that was a few months old, and when he took the case to the counter, they reached under it and pulled out a disk. The guy refused to accept the fact that it wasn't technically used, and didn't believe us when we said vintage games still in the cellophane were worth more than a game that wasn't (he even called us idiots), and that he had no proof that an employee hadn't already taken the game home and played it. So glad that the one that opened in my town is run by a cool guy. I'll easily spend half an hour or more in there, even if I'm buying one game, and know what I'm looking for when I walk in, just because he'll make friendly conversation about games similar to what I'm buying (it's a small town, so the store's rarely busy, so he isn't wasting time).

I saw this all the time whenever dumpstering book stores. In order to get back credit for unsold books, they'd tear off the covers and mail them back to the publisher, so there was always a ton of paperback books with the covers torn off. I'm guessing this is the same thing. Take the games out of the cases, ship the packaging back to the publishers with or without the manuals, then you can sell the disks as used since they aren't getting the complete package. And make your investment be paid off twice.

its not that its used, its that the game is extremely rare. Gamestop is basically buying them from wherever new at like maybe 30 or 40 bucks, and selling them USED as 90, to make it seem as if that is what they are paying people for the game.

Gamestop isn't doing any of this, it's just somebody mad at prices. That game, when this video came out, was 50 new, and 95 used, after a few days, corporated realized that they had given improper instructions, and used a typo, and soon changed it to 35 used. None of the games he listed are anywhere close to rare.

So you are mad that the minimum wage employee's are following a company policy that you dislike? Gamestop had an exclusive contract for selling these 2 titles. As such they controlled the supply and demand.
@Monteryjackcheese
@Monteryjackcheese 10 жыл бұрын
Even if they choose to control the supply and demand by opening new games and selling them used, they are price gouging and that is illegal. Gas companies do the same thing during heavy tourist seasons or moments where travel is at a high point, and it is very much illegal. Just because they control the supply and demand doesn't mean they have the right to ask so much and partake in false advertisement.
@wolfforthchef
@wolfforthchef 10 жыл бұрын
That price gouging is NOT illegal. If it was then said gas companies would be getting sued all the time for it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_gouging Good luck convincing a jury that your video game is a necessary item. Where was the false advertisement?
@Monteryjackcheese
@Monteryjackcheese 10 жыл бұрын
Your very argument seethes with points that make your point invalid. These games are not scarce, nor take much money to procure or facilitate. These products are not in so high demand that changes must be made to them to procure this heightened cost. What gamestop is doing is very much illegal, however, the only thing stopping the lawsuits is that the counterpoints are strong. But just because a counter argument is good doesn't make it legal, it just makes it sound nice and pretty.
@wolfforthchef
@wolfforthchef 10 жыл бұрын
So someone paying $50 for something, opening it and then attempting to resale it for $90 is in your opinion illegal? The item is not what would be classified a necessary item and therefore not subject to any price gouging laws. It would be similar to someone rushing around and buying up every twinkie available and then jacking the price up. While it's asshole'ish in nature it is not illegal.

I used to work at Gamestop, and in this video you said you have only gone to two. I've been to all the Gamestops(EB Games up here in Canada), and they're honest people. I knew what they did, and not once have they ever done something like this. I've watched a couple of your vids, and all I get in my suggestions is angry pissy rants about your personal experience in a store. I'm not a liar. I'm honest. When someone tried to trade, and it wouldn't be much, I'd tell them to sell it on the web. If there was a shitty deal, I'd straight up tell the customer it wasn't worth it, and my co-workers, assistant manager, and manager, would all do the same. Calling, "everyone who works for Gamestop, liars"? I've watched a few angry rants from you. Should I start telling people that everyone who makes vids like you only make angry rants? That'd be a lie, wouldn't it? You wouldn't like it, right? I'm sorry you had this experience, but that's probably how they do things down in the US of A. Heck, they probably weren't even doing that and you're going off assumptions, cause people have come in trading PS2 games and they'd be flawless without scratches. They were people who took care of their games, which I think you don't then? Don't stereotype. Don't assume the worst of everyone from a few people you've spoken to. I doubt you've been lied to. They could have sold those games a whole lot cheaper, but that's business for you. Employees have NO say in pricing, and videos like this which tell people not to support us? Well, that's less pay. Less hours. Less food on the table. People need to make a living too.

I don't understand... Where do you think they are getting these new copies of the game from to open them? Even if they had some left over, they could undoubtedly sell them for MORE if they were selling them new. Used games at Gamestop are naturally cheaper. Unless your claim is that Gamestop is actually getting new copies from the companies that made the games. If that's the case, then this is the fault of the ones who made the games, not Gamestop. If Nintendo were secretly distributing more new copies of a game without announcing it, then they would also be asking the retailers to open them to make them used to keep their secret from getting out. So, there are three options here. 1. This is the fault of Nintendo and other such companies. 2. You are incredibly paranoid and should probably go see a psychiatrist. 3. You did an incredibly bad job of explaining everything in this video. I'm inclined to believe that it is the third one. How and why was the price of the games going up because they were used? You never really explained that.

2074red2074 I'm not sure if that's right. The only way that would work is if they don't pay the company for their products until AFTER they sold the product. As I understand it, they buy the products from companies like Nintendo and then sell them. I could be wrong though. But, if I'm not, then that would mean that they are just buying a game and then selling it for less money for no reason. And, if you are right, then the only people being cheated is the video game companies. This does nothing but help we consumers. So, now I ask, why exactly is this a problem?

Jack Chase what it is that when selling a game new the company will put the price on the system as 9.99 as RRP from the developer but as a used game the company selling it get to choose the price. When I managed Game this was common practice. Game would send you brand new games, listed as used, sealed and when delivery came we would have to unseal them and process them as used for sale. The customer got a new game at a used price point but the funny thing was if they were to buy it new it would have been cheaper than it was used Only benefit on some of the games were that they ended up in offers like 2 for £20 that technically worked out the same price as it would have been new but instead your having to buy 2 games instead of paying £10

I used to work for Gamestop and can confirm that this has been a long standing practice. However, it was harder to pull off back in the PS1 days as reprints were often labelled as Greatest Hits right on the packaging. Here's a summary of what exactly Protomario is describing in the video, for all those who aren't catching on (which seems to be a lot of people...) - 'Rare' game goes into reprint. Not rare anymore. - Gamestop would rather sell a game for $90 than $60 - Contracts with publishers do not allow them to gouge the price of new games. - No rules for used games, however. - Take all the new reprints, open them, sell as used for $90 - Since all the new prints are being sold as used, customers still think the game is rare/out of print, and will happily pay $30 more for what they think is a rare game in good condition.
