Source: I work for GME (Stock ticker for GameStop) Corporate.So a couple of items: 1.) The conversion of new games to used games is a strategy corporate uses to drive sales for a slow moving inventory item. Pre-Owned items offer more benefits to Power Up Reward members. So converting new items to used items actually benefits the customer. This normally happens as part of an end of life cycle for a SKU. GME has the permission of the publisher to preform a New-to-Used conversion. You're uninformed about the communication and the close relationship GME has with its vendors. GME does not have their own disk manufacturing facility, and producing copies of copywritten items is PIRACY. GME DOES NOT PIRATE GAMES. That is a dumb thing to even allude. 2.) GME will expand their retail workforce by as much as 40% during the holiday session, while more than 50% of the year's sales will come in the last quarter of the year. Its a busy time, and that means more opportunities for employees to make a mistake, and more customers get upset, but that's the nature of holiday retail. 3.) PREORDERS... Preorders are the primary factor publishers use when allocating inventory to retailers. Meaning when Bethesda sends 200million copies of games to retailers GME only gets the number to match their pre-orders plus a little extra. Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy all have to get their inventory as well. Support the publisher, support the developer, and just pre-order the damn game. Overall this was an interesting example of how people get upset with the things they don't understand. Don't get me wrong, GME does A LOT OF THINGS WRONG, but unfortunately none of them are the items you described in your video.

Not entirely true. at least the pawn shop I go to, they look up what the value is online and adjust it depending on box/booklet etc. and since I have a pretty good customer/merchant relationship with one of the guys who works there, I get a slightly better deal than some dude who probably doesn't frequent the store.

From personal experience 1. They actually sell pre owned games that don't work at all 2. They give you little to almost nothing for your trade in games 3. They take forever ringing customers up.

I stopped shopping at GameStop for the most part in 2012 because I noticed this. I believe the very last thing I bought at a GameStop was a "new" copy of Super Smash Brothers for the 3DS. I say "new" because they had it marked as new, but it wasn't in the seal. I knew GameStop did sole their "display copies" as new at times, so I wanted to make sure it was sealed. I looked over the counter, and saw plastic over the place where you open the case. I assumed that meant it was sealed and bought it. I took it home and went to open it, just to notice that they had opened the game, taken it out of the seal, and then taped the game shut. It made me mad. That day was the day I decided not to buy anything else from GameStop unless I couldn't find it anywhere else. The only thing I use them for now is to look at games I may be interested in, then go to a different store to buy them.

JobeMinacum Why do you ask this? This wasn't the first time I bought a 3DS game, but it was the last time I bought a 3DS game. I know with every other 3DS game I ever bought before that was fully sealed though. I assume GameStop opened that seal and put tape on themselves, because that's the only 3DS game I ever bought that that has happened with. Pokemon and everything else was fully sealed.

Nott Joey I ask because if you'd ever bought a brand new 3ds game you should know they are wrapped in plastic when brand new. If that plastic wrap is broken, I'd say common-sense tells most people someone opened it. Especially if they had bought games before and knew they came sealed.

the theory of new pertains to if the disc/cartridge has ever been used. several copies are opened to display and they still sell those copies. however they are still in Mint condition as not used. my gamestop does this to however if you speak up they will give you an unopened if you request it and if they have one.

See, I usually go to my local GameStop but that's because those PS2 classics are too good to just pass up. But for PS4 games I just buy Playstation Store Gift Cards and buy it from the playstation store, it's easier because it's a downloadable copy and it's just hassle free. But I preordered Infinite Warfare and I deposited $55 at first, paid for taxes and everything. I asked the clerk if those were the final taxes I ever paid, even if I did finish off the preorder. She said yes. I came back a month later, and she charged me around $15 of taxes for a remaining $25 of a deposit. I cancelled, she got mad, and I got an extra $20 because I guess she was frustrated and counted wrong. Oops.

Solerdude well for starters, this has nothing to do with hats. I'm 100% certain if you were a business owner, you would understand. People don't go out and buy supplies and knit a hat and sell it exactly for what it cost, now do they? Since we're using hat theories. No one said you had to sell to GameStop. Clearly they're not hurting for money too bad as people still take their items in there. This isn't a "buy it for $20 and play it and bring it back and we'll buy it for $20" kind of deal. There's no way to make profit in a situation like that. Everyone acts like that's what they should be doing. You do realize that it cost 255 million dollars to make Grand Theft Auto 5. Gamestop tried to rip me off more times than I can count. They tried to tell me my warranty was void because of a sticker I had removed that said "red rings will occur if a/v cabels aren't plugged in properly". They tried to say the sticker said "warranty void if removed". They then told me they didn't _have_ the original xbox 360 and tried to force me to pay extra for a slim instead of honoring my warranty. They did have the original. Another time they told me my coupon wasn't valid because they "didn't have used 3ds". One time when I ordered a game (can't remember which one) they sent me a significantly cheaper game which wasn't the one I had payed for. Then when I brought it back, they said the game wasn't on the reciept so they "couldn't refund me". I fucking hate Gamestop and I think they should be run out of buisiness.

It's a little distracting when with every fact there is a *pause* then "Yeah" which is followed up with the the ever-annoying popping of the mouth, as if you're delivering the juiciest burn of the century. Sounds pretentious & you can literally hear the slurp of saliva, which confusingly, is also amplified in this segment to the degree of wondering if was purposely done. No surprises in the video. Pretty much just info that we're already aware of. So before you have "plenty more" of these videos, why not drink a little water & realize that the info you're delivering isn't Earth shattering nor calling for sounding like a valley girl as a basis for the overall delivery of info that I toned out without even realizing. I hate Gamestop's business practices as much as the next gamer but try to shoot for sounding a bit less like Jimmy Fallon in his "Ew" sketch he does with his guests. Just an opinion really but if you want to get those "Likes" that you admittedly "like so much" maybe you should try inflection, rather than having so much pride in what you're saying that it feels like you're bragging to a middle school girl about how many rare Beanie Babies you have tucked away in your top secret treehouse you built yourself out of milk crates & a few tarps your mom bought you at Home Depot that, may or may not be, bullet proof material used by Navy Seals but you can't elaborate on because it's classified & you swore on pain of death to protect because you are a super spy that has access to such things. I'll never do a preorder launch event again after Halo 3. I stood in line waiting for an hour and a half at my local Gamestop and watched people walk into the Walmart next door and come out 5 minutes later with the same thing. Ah this brings back memories of when I worked there back in 2003 and 2004. I made the cut and survived seasonal, sga (3rd key!), and moved up to asm. It was "great" giving someone .01 for their game boy when they traded it and all their games in to upgrade to something new. They often didn't even notice how little we gave for the system itself. And then we sold it for $9.99!

As a former employee of GameStop circa 2009 to 2012 I can back some of what you're saying, but at the same time I feel you aren't giving all the details as well. SO here is my experience. 1. The Holiday help not being trained? That tends to be a store by store basis. I was properly trained well before the big sale holidays. The corporate office doesn't say "Hey, don't train your employees." And as far as discs being forgotten? The employees are human and are prone to forgetting ESPECIALLY if they have never worked retail before, but the customer should also always check the case BEFORE leaving the store to ensure they have it before returning home. The blame isn't only on the store for that, and I know you aren't implying that, but it's a very common misconception. But yes, being a GameStop part timer does bite the big one, but most times the job is held by people who just need the extra money, namely high school students. 2. Yeah, I'm not contesting that one. You're completely right about them doing that kind of stuff. But there's more to it than you're wanting to explain. From time to time corporate office will send an email instructing stores to gut and transfer New stock to Pre-owned stock, mainly because it's either really old, or not selling very well. At least in my experience. But they do create artificial demand for certain titles which isn't helped when -GASP- Nintendo does the same damn thing. GO THINK. I have no concerns of GameStop coming after me with a lawsuit. I don't work for them and haven't for around 5 years. I'll expose their bullface lies to anyone. 3. Ah, pushing pre-orders, and lying to people's faces when you tell them you don't have extra stock of said game. There would be times we would actually have a full box of about 30 games and would have to tell people for the first few days that we only had what was pre-ordered (In the case of games that are not limited edition.), and that they should have pre-ordered to guarantee that they got a copy. And yeah, it's nasty that corporate does that and even more so when they cut your hours or bump you down in rank when you don't reach the goals they have despite where your store might be or any other factors you'd image they'd want to look at. But to say that pre-ordering is bad is going a bit far. It doesn't cost people any extra and it really does guarantee they get a copy day 1 along with any of the dumb bonuses that GameStop wants to throw in. Disc warranties aren't always useful, no, but there are some that you'd want to make sure to get it for, namely the Xbox 360 games that were very prone to getting a ring on the reading surface if moved during use. THEN it's a god send, but the other games? Not needed. PS3 used BluRay discs which were super hard to screw up with just minor scratches, DS and 3DS games are cartridges so yeah, they'll work even after being machine washed. And the rewards card isn't a bad thing and shouldn't be spun as such. The cost is minor as it's an annual thing that isn't forcibly renewed every year without your knowledge. It's $15 and boom, you save some extra money and get reward points. Do I think you should just get it if you shop there once or twice every few months? No, it's better to get it if you know you're going to shop there pretty often. That's common sense. With game pushing, that's just easily ignored and like you said, recommend the game you know the customer will want. Bottom line is that GameStop is a business all about the margin of profit. And look, I'm not trying to troll you or say that GameStop is squeaky clean, but if you're going to expose their inner workings then expose ALL of it, and not just confirmation bias. People know that GameStop can be shady. That isn't new, my dude. But some of what was said could just fuel the fire when it comes to people coming in the store or calling to bitch the employees out for something out of their control. Ruruka Andou I don't know much about what kinds of stores you'd have in Canada, but what about pawn shops or third party game stores? usually there are at least a couple in any decent size town around here. otherwise why can you not buy games from somewhere like amazon? If the issue is not having an appropriate way to pay for it, then you could consider purchasing a prepaid debit card from visa or mastercard. you can buy a refillable debit card to buy from amazon that way without the need to get a credit line or open a bank or paypal account.

As a former GS employee, (9 years ago) I would agree that they have a shortage of some games, like the Nintendo titles you mentioned, but I will disagree as to why this happens. Has nothing to do with relationships, there are 2 reasons; simply allotments and for GS more commonly, forcing a 'false' shortage. What I mean is that Gamestop has a culture, there are people that shop at Gamestop as if it's the only choice. If Gamestop says this is a limited title, it must be. Hell at 12 I can go to any Walmart and get any number of games that Gamestop makes believe is a big deal at 12, no lines, no hoopla. Plus, getting new games at places other than GS, means you will probably get it cheaper...

As someone who still (technically; haven't been scheduled in a good while) works at GameStop, I can definitely agree with the whole 'you NEED to get X pre-orders' thing. Not everyone who walks into my store has the desire to pre-order; some have just enough money on them for the one game they're buying. Not everyone who walks into the store knows too much about games (i.e., parents shopping for kids and the like, but don't game themselves). And then there are people who just aren't interested in whatever's available for pre-order at that time (this has happened to me quite a bit, honestly). And yet, despite the whole 'randomness' aspect of it all, it's the employees who somehow catch flak for 'not selling enough pre-orders'. Hell, I've even gotten in trouble for canceling an old pre-order that was two years past and putting that $5 he'd put down toward his purchase. I was trying to help him out, but I ended up in trouble for giving the customer a positive experience. I'm not even going to get into the whole 'a customer comes in WANTING to cancel their pre-order' thing. At that point, isn't it borderline criminal (if not outright) to tell someone 'we can't cancel your pre-order because muh numbers'? At that point, can't it be considered 'stealing their money', to some extent, if they want it back and we say 'nope'? I always go with what the customer wants, personally, because ironically, it's supposed to be company policy to make customers happy. Don't even get me started on the PowerUp Rewards sign-ups. It's especially ridiculous during the holidays, when people only come in for gift cards and otherwise wouldn't set foot in the store; how, by all that is holy, are we supposed to look at those people in particular and go 'so yeah, sign up for our rewards program!' and expect them to actually do it? I saw a coworker be quite insistent with pitching the PowerUp Rewards sign-up to someone who wasn't already signed up. The guy he was being so insistent with? He said 'you know what, fuck this; I've said I don't want to sign up; now you're just pissing me off'. AND HE LEFT. No sale, no sign-up, nothing. Personally, I couldn't blame the customer; I'd have been curt (at the very least) about it myself, were I in his shoes. It's like the old adage goes: 'you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink'. Trying to force these sort of things on people all for the sake of numbers, and punishing the employees in one way or another if they can't make the numbers happen? Kinda sad. I'll keep selling things the way I sell them, because at the end of the day, I do want customers to leave happy with their purchase and experience. Damn the numbers, I say; no one can (or should, rather) force a customer into something they don't genuinely want at that point in time.

I worked cor the company 20 years ago when they werent the name on the store front and we were just as crooked then. We had a shrink wrap machine in the back for rewrapping to ‘new’ status and held preorders for ransom for mags and protection plans. We also could take home Games as a perk with a sign out to be “responsible”. And we really just used the job to resel our own copies. A customer walks in and laughs at the buy back price so we’d offer buying them personally after hours for a touch more and then sell our personal copies just under GameStop costs back to customers. That and we had contacts with the Funco around the way. The industry is a disaster.

We were pre-GameStop named gamestop. We were the launching of the line at Babbages Etc (I worked there 1997-1998 time frame after High school). And we all we worried Electronics Beautique was going to kick our ass because they looked so sleek but were way more expensive. Funny they got bough by GS. The Dreamcast release was nuts. You paid full price with 2 year subscription and two games and warranty whether you had a presale slip or not (and we had hundreds) or you went to the back of the list of calls or pick up. If you didn't spend the $700 ish total if I recall the guy behind you would so we were fully authorized to tell you you were not getting it today until "full benefit orders" were exhausted. I had never felt more slimey. I left before the PS2 release but my friends there did the exact same thing for it as well. Half the store was still PC games at this time. Our Funco's in the area got robbed for shitty locations and eventually folded so the better way to get cheaper games went away even though they started creeping up in price too. But we sent people over there all the time instead of buying our overpriced stuff. Good video man.

My husband pre-ordered an Assassin's Creed game, a while ago, and it was supposed to come with a replica of Ezio's wrist blade and gauntlet. My husband was SO excited about getting that thing, and it was the ONLY reason we pre-ordered. On the game's release day, we showed up to pick up the items, and the manager told us they were all gone. He told us that we should have come earlier in the day. I lost my mind and started yelling. We had paid for the items, and now we were told we couldn't have them, because we weren't waiting in line when the store opened?! After about 15 minutes of arguing, the manager said they DID have one in the back, but they were holding onto it. He told us that they were holding it because they had promised it to a disabled veteran. This was the weirdest guilt trip ever, and made me even angrier. MY HUSBAND IS ALSO A DISABLED VET. I made them give us the item, and they all did thier best to make us feel weird and guilty about it... wtf. We will never go back. That was the worst experience I have had with a retail outlet in a very long time. EDIT: adding this to avoid repeating the same response over and over.. The disabled vet they were describing was NOT my husband. There is absolutely NO chance it was being held for my husband. The manager was holding it for a "friend" that had "just returned home". My husband served in the Gulf War and has been out of the military for a long time. My husband had NOT told them that he was a disabled vet, and they had no way of knowing that he was. They were shocked when I told him he was. The "vet" they were holding it for had NOT pre-ordered, because he supposedly overseas. My husband DID pre-order. They were describing a completely different person. Even if they were psychic and magically knew my husband was a disabled vet without us telling them, wouldn't they have gotten it when they pulled up our account and saw our names? I do not know if this "disabled vet" existed, but the way they treated us with guilt and shame was unforgivable.

Not always the employees fault. At my store we had open boxes on the shelf for new games, but would have sealed copies behind the counter. The idea from the store point of view was if you had a seal copied that is the one you sell so you don't have to keep gutting new copies to make displays. However on more then one occasion over my 4 years with the company did I have customers that either picked back up the open box rather then the sealed box I took off the shelf and either leave the store completely or I had to run out and stop them from taking the wrong box. But it for sure can also be due to employee error as well.
