iirc the way the Xbox version handles the notes was actually always how it was meant to be but the n64 didnt allow for so much individual save data to be stored for three game files. Might be wrong but i think thats why they "changed" it.
@LoMoNoCrAt3 жыл бұрын
That's right. BT addresses it by having like 10 note nests per world, which is kind of lame. I always thought the notes scattered everywhere were like coins in Mario levels that guide you around the level, so they feel sort of empty when you've collected them all on Xbox. You're right though, Rare has said that permanent collection was the original plan and the hardware got in the way.
@granvillimus Жыл бұрын
Your claim about save limitations appears to be true. There was actually a permanent note collection mod released very recently for the N64 version. The way that they got it to function was to disable save files 2 and 3, so it only lets you use one save file. The original N64 game uses a 4Kbit (512 bytes) EEPROM chip built into the cartridge for the save files. If you want a comparison, Donkey Kong 64 used a 16Kbit (2048 bytes) EEPROM chip and also has three save files. Unlike BK however, DK64 saves each individual minor non-regenerating collectible. There are 3500 regular bananas in the game, compared to BK's 900 notes. Aside from the normal bananas though, DK64 also has a bunch of other collectibles that the save file has to keep track of. There are 201 golden bananas, BK only has 100 jiggies. 40 colored blueprints in each level including the hub, these are the functional equivalent to jinjos. One banana fairy in each level. And 977 banana coins. These collectibles are also split up and color coded to only be collected by each of the 5 individual playable Kongs, further complicating things. There are also a number of events you can activate in the levels that persist after you save and quit the game (like certain doors, switches etc), whereas BK's levels mostly reset when you leave or die (except the jiggies). Tooie also used a 16Kbit EEPROM save chip, but it's interesting that they chose to consolidate a bunch of the notes into less numerous baskets instead of individually scattering them all around levels. They may have done this because the levels were so much larger than the first game, and felt players might find collecting 100 individual notes in such massive spaces tedious. The most prevalent complaint levied against DK64 was the sheer quantity of collectibles scattered around the huge levels, so perhaps Tooie's developers took that criticism to heart. I think with that larger save chip, they definitely could have scattered the individual notes and have them be permanently collectible if they wanted. The game is still a lot more complex in a number of other ways that justify the larger save though.

I find your categories quite (redundantly) hilarious--just be honest, GameXplain crew. Many of your categories overlap with each other to give the Switch version more jiggies than it should have gotten. (Ex: Altered Cutscene its own category? Isn't that a redundancy because you have the Most Faithful category at the end? The Nintendo Reference category is also quite silly as of course the Xbox version isn't going to have the Nintendo logos in it, and is therefore not as Faithful). Then two jiggies for one category to get the Switch score into the double digits? I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan, but the Xbox version is far superior. We can take the low score--it's okay. :)

I think you guys were a little too nice to the Switch version here. It's literally just an N64 ROM with zero modifications - and they couldn't even get it to run at 1080p, which is pathetic and makes zero sense. I mean, granted, it is nice to see the game available at all on a Nintendo product again, and I certainly didn't *expect* them to improve this version of the game (especially considering the state of every other N64 game on NSO), but still, there's no denying that this is just about the laziest, cheapest route they could have taken. Typical modern Nintendo. The only *real* benefits that the Switch version has over the Xbox remaster is the more accurate cutscenes which, despite running at a lower resolution and framerate, isn't out of synch like the Xbox version. Also, some of the redone textures for the in-game paintings don't look as good in my eyes. Sure, they are technically much higher-res, but it's also obvious that they just took the in-game models and slapped them on there, which actually looks a little less convincing as a wall painting / picture. That's about it though. And those are incredibly minor 'pros' over the Xbox version, which clearly actually had some actual effort put into it. ***EDIT*** I guess the fact that there doesn't appear to be any noticeable downgrades compared to the original N64 version (like Zelda: OoT for example) is... good?

When eventually Banjo-Tooie comes, the Xbox version is better than the N64 version and that's it, there's a few elements where the original version is better, like the intro cutscene where the music is also out of sync, but that's thanks to slowdown issues, where the music is made to fit the slowdown. The original version of Banjo-Tooie was full of frame drops and slowdowns, it runs very poorly, the N64 was not ready for a game like this, while the Xbox version runs at locked 30FPS, and that alone makes the Xbox version the only one you should play, unless the Switch version has the option to turn off the slowdowns, same will apply.

This isn't true, the Switch version is emulating the original N64 version, which was and still is locked at 30fps. It even retains a couple of the framerate drops from the original N64 version, example being that round Egypt room with the vase in Grunty's Lair. No official release of Banjo Kazooie has ever run at 60fps, not without fan made hacks (which do exist).

It sucks to have the temptation there to rewind death! Don't use them for that if you don't like it. But you should definitely use them to save between play sessions! That way you don't reset to the Grunty's Lair entrance every time you sit down to play, and you can stop playing halfway through a level and not have to come back to all your note and jinjo progress gone. Your life counter won't be reset either, it's nice. I used to have to leave my N64 running over night for that kind of quality of life!

In the spirit of only reviving sequels recently...... I would love an N64 Style of the gameboy advance sequel on Switch.
@Schwarzorn3 жыл бұрын
Ideally, the note high score wouldn't reset when you die or leave the level, but it also wouldn't stay forever either. It's too easy that way, and that's not really a high score. It should have reset only if you got a game over. Then lives would actually matter.

I can understand having a system for cases where there is a tie (no definitive winner) but for a comparison video to work, you have to stay consistent. You want to talk about cheating? Well giving Nintendo Switch 2 jiggies (instead of 1) on the last category is BY ALL MEANS cheating! If you are going to be faithful and fair to both parties, then you cannot play favoritism here. I'm sorry but the correct score SHOULD be 13 jiggies for XBOX and 9 jiggies for Switch. NOT 10! Shame on you GameXplain for not staying impartial in this review. Also, at 04:05 you already referenced the NSO version being true to the game. So that last category is ACTUALLY a duplicate category with no purpose other than to play favoritism to Nintendo. So in fact the real score should be 13 XBOX, 8 Switch! Not 9 or 10! How did you think we wouldn't notice?!

I look at these the same way I look at the Jak and Daxter HD Collection for PS3 and PS4. The HD Collection for ps3 was rebuilt specifically for the ps3 kinda like how openGOAL is for the pc; it's a native port. That's what Banjo Kazooie and Tooie are for the 360, rebuilt for this system. No emulation. But the Jak collection for ps4 is ps2 emulation and has lots of issues. The switch version of Banjo is n64 emulation. That said the emulation for banjo is very nice as displayed in this video. The switch version is good for portability and convenience, but if you have a 360 or newer xbox and are fine with playing at home, that to me is the superior version.

What causes the note glitch? I 100% beat the game in it‘s Rare Replay Version and didn’t encounter it fortunately.
@jasonmartinez5116 Жыл бұрын
The Xbox version changed how the music notes work by making them permanent collectables like it's sequels rather than being removed when you exit the level. This resulted in a bug on the Bottles' Bonus game where some notes are impossible to collect despite being in a collected state. This bug was fixed in a patch on the original XBLA version but unfortunately the original unfixed version re-surfaced on Rare Replay and still hasn't been fixed to this day

Something about some of the changes don't really sit well with me. I think because I expect N64 games to be in 4:3 and to have less draw distance, I don't think it's as accurate if they completely redo the game to upgrade it. But the other big thing is removing the Nintendo logos and replacing models and art. It's kinda whatever though
@Liggliluff3 жыл бұрын
Would be nice with options. Play the game as it was on N64 with reduced resolution, 4:3, limited draw distance and lower poly characters at a distance; or full HD, 16:9, full draw distance and highest quality models. Preferably with an option for each, so you can play it your way.

The Switch version is a port that is trying to simulate playing BK on the N64 and give an authentic and accurate N64 experience. Which is pretty much what it succeeds in doing. While the XBLA version is meant to me a polished version with improvements. So while in my opinion the Xbox version is superior, they both more or less do what they're meant to do
@nate67493 жыл бұрын
Im glad microsoft let them have banjo kazooie back on a nintendo console. But i think they helped ported the switch version since not only they helped make the port on xbox, but if you notice alot of the text is different... plus the rewind feature. But the reason they didn't do the note keeping is to keep it original to how nintendo and rare designed it to be from back then. Since the port on xbox was made when Rare was REMAKING it along with microsoft, and become a microsoft rights game. But they must have decided to fufill the problems, and the stop n swap promise again. when consoles were better at connecting to other games through save data.
