17:55 you should clip this part into a short. My wife is an elementary school teacher and when she comes home from a bad day she NEEDS alone time. Whatever you do, do your thing. She watches Bravo reality shows and true crime docs. I play racing and action games. As functional adults and contributing members of society, everyone needs to unwind with a preferred activity! This should never be stigmatized.

I’m 26 and recently divorced with one 4 year old, but I still find time to play with a full time job. I’ll never give up the one hobby that brings me peace while I get my stuff done.

When I first got into Highschool, my good friend Alek and I went in together to buy the first season of Telltales The Walking Dead. We spent the weekend playing through it together as I watched. Still one of my favorite gaming memories!

Thanks for sharing JD! I really needed to hear this. I’m almost 25 yrs old and video games bring me so much happiness. Sometimes I feel ashamed to talk about video games in public outside of my family and friend group. I’m so glad to see other adults with an actual life who love playing video games as well!

I accidentally came across this channel a few days to about a week ago and I have to say I have been loving the content. I'm only 24, and I rarely and I mean rarely ever comment but god damn it's like you speak on a lot of topics that are always running through my head lol. Here I am sitting at my pc to play some cyberpunk since it's a new pickup for me but I unintentionally found myself waiting to put my headset and play because i'm almost done with the video 😅

A lot of these points are relatable, I really enjoyed listening to it. Being an adult now I finally understand all the "ignore it" "be yourself" stuff adults would say about bullies, but it's somehow impossible to absorb and understand as a kid. Relationships can't be constantly sacrificing yourself to mitigate your own fears all the time either, which I also took way too long to learn. "Standing up for yourself" to bullies as a kid is hard, it feels nearly impossible, but I think we can all start by standing up for ourselves, to ourselves. Accept yourself before you worry about others accepting you.

I was self conscious of my gaming hobby until I was in my 30s. Now I embrace being the gaming nerd. I remember getting upset with my wife for bringing it up in public and she was so (rightfully) confused. Why was I upset that she was bringing up a passion of mine in front of friends. So funny to think back on.

For me, I think the thing that’s going to revive my gaming is going to have to be purchasing a handheld. Desktop gaming just doesn’t feel like gaming since I work in IT all day. The last thing I want to do is sit in front of a computer the few days I do feel like getting a little gaming session in.

A PC Gamer friend has a SteamDeck and even though he has a Gaming Tower he says the SteamDeck was an absolute game changer for him. I have an XBox S, PS4, SwitchLite, and an ASUS Gaming Laptop. Over the last five years, I ONLY use the Switch and Laptop and have not turned the PlayStation or XBox in over two years.

We grew up with videogames dude. It's a way of life for us. The older generations didn't grow up with what we had and have. As long as you take care of your responsibilities before you start gaming then everything is Gucci :) Happy Gaming

I've also been ridiculed and bullied for my love of computers and games throughout my childhood. The undiagnosed AuDHD didn't help either. So when me and my future wife started dating over 20 years ago, and one day she saw my collection of Atari 2600 cartridges, I was a little bit terrified. But instead of rolling her eyes or something like that, she loved them and was very happy that I had this hobby. And so, that day I knew I was going to marry her some day. The secret really is as you say - to be able to do things together, as well as separately. Some of our hobbies overlap (board games, star trek, music and dance) and some don't (I'm playing and making video games and painting warhammer miniatures, she's tinkering with her motorcycle and tending to her garden), and it's good! And if you're wondering, the Atari 2600 collection is still with me, staring at me as I write these words - it's sitting on a bookshelf right in front of my PS2 collection.

I had a similar experience. I lived in Massachusetts until I was about 12 and i moved to NYC. it was a total culture shock. The issue I had was that I was tall (6'2 at 12). So, you add that, and I played video games and didn't play basketball at the time. It's almost a crime being tall and not playing basketball in NY. but I played video games and loved anime. So, in order to not deal with all the crap, I had to blend in. I ended up playing ball and fitting in while at home i was a totally different person. Freely playing crono trigger on my old pc and watching anime. I had my circle of friends from middle school and a few in high school. Most people I knew didn't even know i played video games. The people who did (other than my few friends) would call me white boy and all of kinds of crazy things. It had gotten to a point I had to fight a lot and just keep it quiet. Now that I am older i could care less. I started to really be myself in my JR year of high school. Sorry for the long tangent. This video and topic connected with me.

I was the opposite in high school. Typical jock and video games were “a waste of time”. In college I played halo on my friends 360 and Skyrim one Christmas break. Fast forward to post college adult life I am now a huge gamer. Such a waste trying to people please. I think people caring about what you do in your free time is ridiculous. It’s ok to doom scroll for hours on end but not to game???? I’m 31.

Why wouldn't it be OK? It's just a hobby among many others. In society it's usually always the thing that gives the most joy to men and causes them to spend less money in society that get's stigmatised, and that's video games. The powers that be want men to be slaving away and spending on useless garbage. Video games stop men from doing that.

My advice is to never ask your wife for permission to do a hobby. Just do it. You don't need permission.

I can’t help but wonder if the shaming was more about demeanor and being over weight. Almost every kid I knew played video games (I’m 45) the difference was how many and the types of games you played. For sure RPGS and similar games made you “nerdy” but there was contra and sports games of all kinds and kung fu, Ninja Gaiden, Skate or die… as you became a teen mist people niche down. If you played sports you usually played sports games, artsy and nerdy kids often landed in the RPG zone and bro-y agro kids often played games where shooting was heavily themed. When women/girls came into the picture is often when games being nerdy and not acceptable came more into play. Im more NY/CT area, I have lived in GA and WA. It was more or less the same in all these places. I broke my arm when I was 11 and gained a lot of wait and people picked on me pretty much until I was 13 and leaned back out… I do realize milage varies. I do believe if you are more than 50lbs overweight you should loose weight for your healths sake but America (maybe the world) looks at and treats overweight people very poorly. But anyway it sounds like you had lots of compounding variables. Not just gaming. This being a gaming nerd (outside of the extra nerdy gamer type) thing is more of a 70’s early 80’s thing.

I felt the same way about multi-player games. CoD, Halo, etc are games people get SUPER into it and devote time to being fantastic at it. I just want to enjoy my time playing, and if people are being competitive with it, it ruins the fun for me. I tend to just want to experience, not master. Single player games or co-op games where it won't matter if I suck are my jam.
@kennypowers19454 күн бұрын
I like the competitive aspect, I get bored playing games alone and my mind always makes me feel like I’m wasting my time. Unless I’m playing multiplayer stuff, then it feels fun to me
