NFS 1 - Blew my mind. NFS 2 - was improved but also had "codes" One of the last batch of cars that required a driver. NFS III - huge jump in graphics - but I did not play it as much as the other two. Then came Porsche - and I cannot for the life of me comprehend why other manufacturers have not done a game like this. I loved Porsche before this game - but then I killed days of my life playing this. There has not been a title so inspirational since.

haha I love how in almost every youtube video that talks about old games always has someone saying "this game should be remastered!!!!" Especially when it's not console games that are only in 320 X 240 resolution that don't't have any graphic settings that can be tweaked :D Triple A publishers can barely make a descent cheap cash-in "remaster" of relatively recently released console games. I have yet to see any PC re-release that works better than the original with some community patches or mods with very few exceptions such as The Witcher and Red Faction Guerrilla which where actually free. The "remastered" thing is a console market disease that has been brought to PC games along with other console market diseases like DLCs, season passes, special editions and so on

Coming back just to watch it again. I realized after playing this game and seeing it multiple what the gaming industry really lost. It lost the passion and love that went into making great games. It just looks like the dedication for games has just dropped off. What I'm basically saying is that you'll never see a game with so much love and dedication put into it as much as you see here. The level of detail in just about everything (car selection, the actual driving and the history) will never be matched in the state modern video games are in. A great example would be the difference between Mafia and Mafia 3.

I'm sure there are still plenty of individuals in the industry who would love to put the amount of detail and passion that's in this game into new ones, but the higher ups have turned everything into an assembly line. They don't care about actual quality anymore, they just want their profits as fast as possible. Only way we would probably see another racing game (or most any other type) on this level again is if it's independent...but then there's the financial backing problem and ultra-lengthy development stage that plague so many of those titles.

Thanks for that deep-dive into one of the best NFS titles ever. Great driving, game mode variety, nice tracks and lots of love for Porsche. The cars are not just an unlock item, as the player slowly progresses through the entire Porsche history - learning tracks with oldtimers first, then getting more capable and faster vehicles over time. It still has the spirit of the original Test Drive and Need for Speed, celebrating luxury sports cars before everybody went full Gangsta.

Soo many great memories I had with with game. Played it when I was 6 years old and didn't even knew the controls or how to tune the car properly; still don't. But this game was the reason for my love with Porsche's, the way each car handles, the way each car behaves when damaged, and the details were just astonishing to look at. I think by far this has to be one the great games released in 2000. Even the styling of each of the tracks like Corsica, Auvergne, Alps, etc felt different in so many ways, like for examples you're in a road covered with snow and the next thing you know the road suddenly turns normal. With loads of shortcuts (of course they weren't that many) and challenging A.I (and i'm talking about you Dylan). If someone wants to go back to history with the Need for Speed series which E.A Canada has made this has to be one of those examples. Nowadays not that many people look back into the games from 2000 and at the end get's left out. I still don't why people hate this game so much, I mean I get it's due to having only Porsche vehicles but that's only the minor problem. Just look onto the bright side and be happy with what you got.

Hey dude, it seems you realy like the game and history around it so here's some info you didn't mention and maybe don't know. The game was made by EA canada, but PS1 version was done by Eden Studios, now known for the Test Drive Unlimited series. The game did not sell well on PC becuse of piracy and it didn't sell on PS1 as well, becuse it average and everybody was waiting for Gran Turismo 3 and PS2. The bad sales killed the planed sequel, NFS: Ferrari, which combined with Sega screwing around with their Outrun Ferrari licence killed the whole thing. Thats why there was no NFS in 2001. NFS Ferrari was planed as an upgraded version of Porsche, like NFS High stakes/road challenge was to hot persuit 1. The last NFS made by EA Canada was afaik actually NFS:HP2, but they only did the multiplatform version for Xbox, GC and PC, the lead was blackbox version for PS2. The PC version was EA Canadas try at making HP2 a competitive online racing game, with dedicated servers on pair with FPS game at the time and very good anti-cheating solutions.

Great vid! You're absolutely right. It was a classy game, and gave off a great feel to just play it, and there was quite a bit of stuff to immerse yourself in apart from the racing. The best part of it was the tracks weren't some Bathurst or Silverstone or some boring shit that you go mad driving around in circles. Most of the tracks looked alive, and felt great, for racing, as well as just relaxed driving and admiring the scenic stuff. I completely agree with your thoughts on the factory driver mode too. Devs try so hard and blow budgets on giving us "cinematic experiences" and shit these days.... when basic stuff like factory driver does a really nice job of keeping you engaged on various levels. Thoughtfully put together content trumps surface glitz anyday. My struggles in the downhill racing on the Pyrenees against that upstart kid and the older guy are still some of my most vivid memories of any racing game. And I still remember the frantic delivery missions from Dieter. Wish they'd remake it, or do even better.

This was the one NFS game that I really got into. I have ADD and I am not a gamer at all. Usually, I can''t focus on a game long enough to get into it. Porsche Unleashed was one of the very few games that captured my imagination. I played this for hours and hours. The story lines really engaged me. It was nice to progress through the different cars and feel how they changed with respect to power and dynamics and all of that. It made you appreciate the car you were driving and made you look forward to the next generation vehicles. It's too bad that today we are spoiled by insane graphics and physics. I would love to go for a run in the old industrial zone, but it's hard to go back to those old school graphics. I seriously think a modern rendition of this game would knock everyone's socks off. Make the physics super realistic. Make us throw our remotes in frustration. Make us work hard for the next car. Hell, include some history, life and times of what made the cars what they are today. I would pay good money for that. (The Mercedes museum in Stuttgard could serve as inspiration, really nice to walk through it in a chronological manner.)

I have several memories, all from childhood and adolescence that I carry with me throughout life as a reminder of what true happiness and bliss feels like and one of them is undoubtedly having the PC all to myself for an entire rainy weekend during school holidays and playing this game on a new career from scratch. This game and nfs underground 2 I would list as the most enjoyable games I ever played. And I've played allot. FPS, new and old. Racing games. Real time strategy games. Everything. I was something of a counter strike god that forced my office colleagues to investigate whether or not I had mods and had been teaching. And if I remember correctly from one conversation on mic gave people goosebumps on Black ops 2 search and destroy. Lived in a fictional city called san andreas for quite a while. Lured the whole family and friends around the living room playing underground 2 on the home theartre system... with racheals car. Played GTA when it was still 2 dimentional. I lived gaming for a large part of my life although now it's all passed memories but this one is something special. If you had to ask me for my top three games ever played it would be a very hard selection to make but the first would be easy and it would be this one, or as I know it porsche 2000.

I would come home after a stressful day (which was more or less any given day at the time), I'd sink into my seat and fire up my PC, hop into a 914 or a '70s 911 in Côte d'Azur and drive into the sun next to the Mediterranean Sea. I felt so peaceful right there in the game... I absolutely loved this game, the physics, cars, challenges, everything, and I played it to death, but what I most remember years later is that feeling of peace. That was priceless to me.

Imagine something like this game having all car models from all generations and having all the different variants but it's not just Porsche. That's would be epic. I know that Nissan already has more than 10 the different Skylines. Just the Skylines
@TotallyNotASpy1
@TotallyNotASpy1 4 жыл бұрын
That would really be amazing in fact. Nissan has a load of different variants of plenty of their cars indeed, the Skyline itself has five or six or more different variants in each of it's generations. Same for Subaru with the Impreza and Mazda with the RX-7. There are so many possibilities...

I would love a game like that but I have to admit that I’m not a fan of Asian cars. Almost any European or American brand would do the trick for me though.

I was hoping so much they would continue on this road and make similar titles about the evolution of Jaguar, Audi, Ferrari. Lamborghini would've been fun, starting the evolution mode with tractor racing... I'm still waiting for that, tbh.

Greatest racing game to date! This was one of the earliest video games I ever played, and it's still near the top of my list for favorites, regardless of nostalgia. This game single-handedly gave me my love for Porsche, and probably electronic music as well (Rom Di Prisco is a legend). Porsche Unleashed may not have been the most realistic racer ever, but it was (and still is) a dang good one. Few racing titles have ever even come close to the combination of realism yet fun that this game contains. As every year passes, I always wish EA would re-release this game, just with updated graphics (which were great for the time), all the new models since 2000 (and some more of the old race cars), and more tracks. Nothing else needed...I would pay big bucks for that. 10/10 game.

After this game EA has all the licenses for all porsche cars to the point that if you wanna make a game with porche you should ask EA for licensing. And if you'll ask Porsche they'll send you to EA.

I adore this game. It's THE reason why I fell in love with Porsche. The Texaco gas station that my parents used to go to had the demo disks available at the register and I was allowed to get two of them. Money was very tight for us back then so having a new game of any kind was a treat! We sat around the family computer and played the demos and were blown away by the game and that our Dell could even run it. A few months later, my parents surprised me with the full game and a flight stick to drive with. (They chose a flight stick because I was in leg casts at the time and would be for many more months so I wouldn't be able to use a wheel and pedals) I actually got very into automotive history because of this game. Shows like Top Gear and Jason Cammisa's Revelations seem to have the same magic this game had for me.

What I'd give to be able to play this game today with a wheel online against other people. I don't think I'd get tired of it. Obviously everyone would choose the most spec'd out version of the fastest car.. so then it would be a matter of how you had the car setup.. and simply how well you could drive it.. plus damage was a real thing, so people wouldn't be crashing into you like crazy cuz it would compromise their car. This truly was and maybe is one of the greatest racing games ever. I was 12yrs old when I got this for PC, and we were fortunate enough to have a computer with great graphics. Couple that to a really nice 2.1 speaker setup... where you felt the rumble of the engine through the subwoofer, and heard every crisp detail through quality speakers.. and then I got a cheap but usable racing wheel.. PLUS we actually had a massive 19" CRT monitor.. the experience was beyond immersive. I had no idea this game would be what it was when I picked it out. I just saw Need For Speed, Porsche Unleashed.. and thought it was the coolest thing ever.. cuz Porsches are cool (I had 2 Porsche posters in my room from those Scholastic Book fairs or whatever in elementary school). The environments, the car interiors, the lighting, the SOUNDS, the FEEL.. it was all immersive and detailed. Incredible for it's time. I spent endless hours over a handful of years on this game.. customizing so many cars.. spending so much time choosing what color interiors to go with the exteriors.. and just simply exploring the different tracks.. which I almost want to call MAPS, cuz they were like their own individual worlds.

I kind of get what you intended to mean, But Blackbox did NOT run the series into the ground. It made it one of the most popular game franchises ever, and then trailed off when they basically got the corporate equivalent of tongue tied with trying to develop yearly titles, Which they mostly succeeded at, as their worst titles were better than Ghosts Best ones. Ghost Games Definitively ran the series into the ground and continue to do so with their mangled corpse of a driving engine running on Frostbite still deftly Braketodrift slides through another entry put out by Criterion.

The best NFS game ever made without question, lot of content and top quality in almost every aspect. Let me emphasize something less discussed: its sound and environmental design. Lot of detailed background noises, sound effects, pretty lights, nice locations and objects in the landscape, little details and also the curves and roads all feel natural and make the landscapes alive. The engine and mechanical sounds are also way better than in some later NFS games. Never felt that level of immersion in any other NFS game, it made you enjoy cruising in a great car while watching a pretty scenery, racing was secondary to this experience.

This game should be declared national treasure. My only regret was I never had the chance to ride the 917 and 959. I foolishly dumped the Evolution mode and returned to normal races. I still have childhood toys of them and was recently lucky to test-drive a friend's 959 (I think he sold it to a collector now), but not riding them in the game is a big miss. Someone should petition EA to make it compatible for Windows 10.

In my opinion the classic NFS did not die when Black Box took over. I'd say their first game, Hot Pursuit 2, still feels like a classic need for speed. For me, the series changed from classic to modern NFS with Underground and thereafter, and died when Criterion took over.
