@@ethanpschwartz Theoretically yes, according to the USB HID spec sending a status report for page 0C and scan code E5 should request enabling bass boost. Hilariously, the intellimouse actually was a super significant piece of gaming history with counterstrike. It was one of the most readily available optical mice with a low dpi and side buttons not to mention ergonomic form. There were enough CS players who swore by it for years, that once it got discontinued it started skyrocketing in price on the reseller market. Why is it cheap now? Well a demand for that formfactor of an optical mouse led to a new competitor entering the mouse game just to meet the desire for replacements for it. And that ladies and germs in why we now have steelseries mice.

You're forgetting, throughout this entire video, that 30 FPS was the "gaming standard" for most people in the early 2000s. 60 FPS was fast, and above that was just trying to achieve max FPS. Most monitors only had a max refresh rate of 90hz at best. 60FPS was just not what people were aiming for. Having 30 FPS on that computer on high in CS:S is exactly what you'd expect, it's textbook. Same with portal, and other Source games. That performance on that old thing is pretty crazy.

The Dimension 8300 was actually high-end. The 3D model has no floppy drive bay, and only has a single CD drive, making it a low-end model. It is probably a Dimension 4400, which was available with a Pentium 4 1.6ghz and a crappy Nvidia GF MX64 or something similar. If I'm not mistaken, there were even models with a Celeron. The Dimension 4400 is also likely because it was a popular model among computer rental companies for offices (it's cheaper to rent a desktop than to buy and maintain one, in an office building, if the PC breaks down they replace it in a matter of minutes). Perhaps the game's developers were using computers like this in the building, and that's why it was used as a model. At that time (more precisely in 2002) I had one of those, Pentium 4 1.6, 256mb, 40gb, but with a FX5200 128mb, Dell surround sound, and other accessories that were sold directly through the website through customization (DVD drive, Soundblaster audigy...) It worked well for more than 10 years (it was normally used after 10 years, even though it was a little old for the time) it died due to catastrophic failure in several capacitors, but recently I acquired another one just like it, still working, and I did a recap. Some interesting facts: Dell was criticized by a considerable number of people for using this all-plastic case, but I personally think it's excellent. At that time, it was common for people to get a slight electric shock when touching a case (especially if the paint had peeled off a little). Some people report that even if the computer was connected to a grounded outlet (perhaps due to poor or deficient grounding), the noise level of the case was also very good, it muffled the noise of the HD and the fan quite well. It had 2 front USB ports, a mic input and a headphone output on the front, which are covered by this front cover, which allows you to connect the cables and keep the cover closed, but this is terrible if you used the computer on the floor. A few years later, they gained the reputation of being slow (and they really were), but not because of bad specs, but because the capacitors failed (capacitor plague). The machine continued to work, but with a terrible ripple in the CPU and memory power supply, causing reading errors that were not critical enough to make the machine crash frequently, but at the operating system level, generated several rereading and rewriting operations. The power supply was included in the capacitor plague. The devices were mounted in their bays using green rails, which contained a soft rubber that prevented the vibration of the HD or CD drive from resonating through the case, making the computer silent (not to mention the various foams on the edges of the case to prevent vibration). It has diagnostic LEDs on the back, since most of the motherboards that these Dells used were genuine Intel motherboards. The system design is not "weird" for the sake of it. This was the beginning of the Gold Customer Care era, where customers could buy the service and, in case of problems, have a Dell technician come to their home. The weird design means that every component in this PC is easy to remove and replace (the motherboard is mounted on a plate that slides out). By removing this plate, you can put in a regular motherboard, mark the screw holes, and drill holes in the case plate to screw the screw thread holders directly into the case, so you can install any ATX board in the case.

I think those buttons are standardized, just like arrow keys, tab, f5 or all the normal keys. Since the keyboard shows as an usb keyboard in the os, some smart and dedicated android OS developer implemented functionality for them probably 15 years ago. The modern earphones, those show up as audio devices, not as keyboards, which means the device manufacturer has to do their own stuff to make it work. And the guy doing that is not some low-level OS programming wizard.

For future reference, retrobrighting doesn't require taking the thing all the way apart like that. You just have to get any electronics out to avoid spilling liquid on them and make sure all the yellowed surfaces will be exposed to the sun. Those gray pieces inside could have stayed attached. Also, now I really am wondering if any off-the-shelf motherboards will fit in that case. Because it's a pretty iconic case, if only because of its appearance in that game, and Dell did a good job of making it easy to get stuff in and out of.

my friend Ben gamed on a dell dimension 4500 for years and years, well after it was even remotely viable for any modern stuff. i remember him still using it in 2009-2011, mostly bc we were all really poor at the time, and he used it to play Morrowind and World of Warcraft, which it handled admirably. it definitely didnt have the AMD specs, it was a p4 of some kind. at the time, i _also_ had an old pc (an athlon xp mobile 2600+ with a geforce 6800 gt) and mine was also aging fairly ungracefully so we played a lot of old games together. i ended up moving out of town and lost contact with him and a few years later he did just about the craziest thing you can do and drove his car onto the train tracks, at an oncoming train. obviously, car loses in that situation. i miss him dearly. he was such a kind dude, i would have been homeless if he hadn't let me live with him for that time and i don't think i ever let him know how life changing his kindness was adequately. wherever you are, ben, i really miss you and i really appreciate what you did for me. to the point I'm leaving an impossibly heavy comment on a video about the computer in cs_office, a game you didn't even like that much. phew. glad i have therapy in an hour and a half!!!! sorry not sorry for the heavy comment lmao!

Zip drives were actually really cool, especially in times of terrible internet speed and Windows networking being an absolute nightmare. it was that awkward period where not everyone had a CD burner yet, floppies where too small to be useful, but USB flash drives where not quite a thing yet either. except nobody actually had a zip drive, so you were fucked either way. good times.

Except zip disks were incredibly failure prone. It was common for drives to eat disks. The people that did have them hated them. My mom's office used them for a year or two before dumping them. I got to take apart one she brought home with a seized disk in it. Great in concept, bad in execution.

I love the breakdown of the textures and explaining how they shopped together the bits to look convincing. I remember back in 2013 I was analyzing these props as well. I definitely have like 4 of those Sound Blaster Cards that were pictured in there. I think the closest I've seen to a Dell Dimension of that style being able to fit a board like that is a 2003 Dell Dimension I had rebuilt and donated to a volunteer fire dept. One of my friends worked at back in 2014 that had a standard all green Dell branded Intel manufactured micro-atx motherboard in the same generation as the Asus one featured. It was a Dell Dimension 3000? Series with an Intel Celeron, 2 slots for DDR1 Ram, and 3 pci's. Stock Operating system was definitely XP. Even had the sticker on it still. So basically the same style of casing but without the big ass rim around the edge that usually hinted at flip open proprietary bullshit. I would totally be down for modifying a Dell like that to fit a regular ATX motherboard if someone brought it to me though XD EDIT: Now that I think of it these CS Office machines and monitors were being used in my schools up to one point and then they got those gridded black Optiplexes. Also the Dell keyboards sucked so much that the CS Office replaced them with those logitechs XD

This is a real blast from the past. My dad actually had a Dell Dimension computer for a while, so I instantly recognized it when I stumbled upon Idiot Box back around 2010, and that ended up getting me into GMod in a similar way.
