Don't have them boiled if you have a hard time appreciate them. You need to properly sauté them. And, as the famous french cook Julia Child said, "Don't crowd the mushrooms or else they won't brown". As in, cook them in a single layer in a skillet, do not pile them on top of each other. You don't want soggy mushrooms if you're trying to learn to like them at first. Heat your pan empty first on high heat for a minute, add a generous amount of a high heat cooking oil such as avocado oil or frying oil. Throw the quartered or sliced mushrooms in, and salt them well to help draw out moisture. shake the skillet by the handle to help release steam, as well as prevent them from sticking. Stir them constantly to help avoid sticking. You can begin to turn the heat down some after a minute, but use as high of a heat as possible without burning your oil/butter. Depending on the burners, probably somewhere between a 6-8 out of 10. Assuming you have the kind with a dial like that anyways. You are looking for mushrooms that have shrunken quite a bit from sucessfully removing some of their water content. golden to golden-brown, with browned edges and have developed a shiny, fried look. Butter tastes great with mushrooms but it burns more easily, as does olive oil. So with those, you probably don't want to go over medium heat, but it can take longer and not have quite the same, most delicious texture as one pan fried over high heat. You can continue to fry them until they're more browned and very crisp, if you want something more dry and chewy. But I recommend going for golden brown. You could use these mushrooms as a pairing for any kind of beef, as well as making a sandwich with them, or putting them in an omelette. For a sandwich, I recommend sauteeing slivers of onion and bell pepper, then toasting bread with cheese on it, and then putting all of the sauteed veggies into it. If you already like those other veggies anyways. It's like a meatless philly cheese steak.
